  • `Awapuhi-ko `oko`o / Torch Ginger / Etlingera elatior / Phaeomeria magnifica / Twin Falls Puohokamoa Valley Maui Hawai’i “The torch ginger or wax flower (Etlingera elatior) is believed native to Sulawesi (Celebes) and Jawa, Indonesia (Java). The plant is now grown in many tropical locations both for the extravagant ‘flowers’ and for food. In Malaysia, it is called kantan. The peduncles (stems) of the inflorescence are chopped and added to laksa pots (various curries or soups made with rice noodles). The spectacular inflorescence rises from the rhizome to a height of 60 centimeters (24 inches) to more than a meter (40 inches). The individual flowers will appear from between the pinecone-like scales above the waxy bracts. The leaves grow in ranks from separate stalks along the rhizome. The leafy stalks are evergreen and get 4.5 to 6 meters (15 to 20 feet) tall. Etlingera elatior (Torch Ginger or Ginger Flower) is a species of herbaceous perennial plant. Botanical synonyms include Nicolaia elatior and Phaeomeria speciosa. The showy pink flowers are used in decorative arrangements while the flower buds are an important ingredient in the Nonya dish laksa. In North Sumtara, the flower buds are used for a dish called arsik ikan mas (Andaliman Peppercorn Spiced Carps) It is known in Indonesianas “bunga kecombrang ” or “honje”, Malay as bunga kantan and Thai as kaalaa. In Karo, it is known as asam cekala (asam meaning ‘sour’), and the flower buds, but more importantly the ripe seed pods, which are packed with small black seeds, are an essential ingredient of the Karo version of sayur asam, and are particularly suited to cooking fresh fish.” Information Information Sources Torch Ginger

The Kaw Tribe, formerly known as the Kansa (or Konza) at one time stretched over 20 million acres across northern Kansas into Nebraska and Missouri. In 1825, a treaty was signed by the Kanza Tribe in which the Tribe “agreed” to sell a large portion of its land base and relocated to a reservation near present day Topeka, Kansas. The Kansa lived a semi-nomadic life, depending primarily on buffalo hunting and some farming for their food. They obtained social prestige and honor only in combat, and their chiefs were chosen for bravery and wisdom. The culture of the Kansa was that of the Plains people of the central United States. Typical of the Plains culture area, adolescent boys underwent a puberty rite known as the vision quest-a period of isolation meant to invoke supernatural images. Religious beliefs were centered around spirits associated with nature. Highly developed burial customs were followed; the body was placed in a shallow grave with food, clothing, and other needs for the afterlife. By 1840 the lands of the Kansa had been acquired by the United States government and incorporated into the so-called Indian Territory, to which many Native Americans were being removed. In 1846, the Kaw numbering about 1,600, signed another treaty and moved southwestward near what is known today as Council Grove, Kansas Kanza ~ Kaw Nation Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi

Prepare a noble death song for the day when you go over the great divide. Always give a word or a sign of salute when meeting or passing a friend, even a stranger, when in a lonely place. / Show respect to all people and grovel to none. / When you arise in the morning give thanks for the food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies only in yourself. / Abuse no one and no thing, for abuse turns the wise ones to fools and robs the spirit of its vision. When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. / Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.” / quote by Chief Tecumseh, Shawnee Nation Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi / Shooting Date/Time 29 August 2007 21:16:56 / Tv( Shutter Speed ) 1/200 / Av( Aperture Value ) 9.0 / ISO Speed 400 / Lens EF28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM / Focal Length 28.0 mm

  • Surge Zone / Maui Hawai’i / Digital Art “Now, touch the air softly, / Step gently. One, two… / I’ll love you till roses / Are robin’s-egg blue. I’ll love you till gravel / Is eaten for bread, / And lemons are orange, / And lavender’s red. Now, touch the air softly, / Swing gentle the broom, / I’ll love you till windows / Are all of a room. And the table is laid, / And the table is bare, / And the ceiling reposes / On bottomless air. I’ll love you till Heaven / Rips the stars from his coat, / And the Moon rows away / In a glass-bottomed boat. And Orion steps down / Like a diver below, / And the Earth is ablaze, / And the Ocean aglow. So touch the air softly, / And swing the broom high, / We will dust the grey mountains, / And sweep the blue sky. And, I’ll love you as long / As the furrow, the plow, / As However is Ever, / And Ever is Now.” Lyrics by Peter Mayer

To the Babylonians, Phoenicians, and Assyrians, it was honoured as a symbol of fertility. 2. In Native American tradition, the fish is a symbol for mystical secrets, for it can swim to the deepest regions of the ocean and explore its hidden knowledge. 3. In British lore, it was believed that eating fish before lovemaking could enable a couple to conceive a child. 4. The early Christians used the fish as the symbol for the Christ Consciousness. It was widely believed that this symbol resulted from the Greek acronym for \”Jesus Christ, Son of God.\” But there is also the fact that the coming of Jesus ushered in the Age of Pisces the Fish, which encapsulates the mysticism, love, and happiness to which all world traditions ascribe to the fish. 5. In Scandinavia, fish was considered an aphrodisiac, and was popularly consumed on Friday, the feast day of Freya, Goddess of Love – and in her honour Friday was a day dedicated to lovemaking. There are, therefore, many possibilities if you dream of a fish – all good, even if the fish was a greatly feared one like the Shark [a powerful Hawaiian Aumakua]. If there is a possibility of a pregnancy, dreaming of a fish could mean that a child is on the way, and the pregnancy and birth will be uneventful and result in a healthy baby. If the dreamer is in love but is not yet sure about the beloved’s feelings, dreaming of a fish strongly indicates that the feelings are indeed reciprocated. Dreaming of catching fish, either with a pole or with a net, indicates success and prosperity ahead. Seeing fish swimming in a clear pool indicates that a number of secrets about yourself and the world around you are going to suddenly become clearer.” Information Source from MSN Free Dream Dicitonary Astrocenter Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi

  • Paperbark Birch in Autumn Gold / North Pole Alaska North Star “Lost in the forest, I broke off a dark twig and lifted its whisper to my thirsty lips; maybe it was the voice of the rain crying, a cracked bell, or a torn heart. Something from far off it seemed / deep and secret to me, / hidden by the earth, / a shout muffled by huge autumns, / by the moist half-open darkness of the leaves. Wakening from the dreaming forest there, / the hazel-sprig sang under my tongue, / its drifting fragrance climbed up through my conscious mind as if suddenly the roots I had left behind cried out to me, the land I had lost with my childhood… and I stopped, wounded by the wandering scent.” ~ Poetry by Pablo Neruda Copyright © Sharon Mau 2009 / My images do not belong to the public domain.
