The MIL lived in an old farmhouse Nr Looe and this was an actual old working stove on which she did her cooking. The recounting of her childhood gave me the idea as to how children bathed in earlier times. COTTAGE WINDOW,,,,,,,,,,,with old kettle and flowers The Folk Park adjoins the castle and aims to show what everyday life was like in rural Ireland about 100 years ago. It contains reconstructed farmhouses, cottages and shops, and care has been taken to make them as authentic as possible, particularly with regard to furnishings. The Park is a living museum : animals are tended, bread is baked, milk is churned, walls are whitewashed and roofs are thatched. You may visit an Irish farmhouse, watch the blacksmith fit a horseshoe, attend a weaving demonstration, and bake and eat scones at the local tea house. The village also reflects the fundamental changes that led to increased mobility.

Grandma’s Home by Nicole Ryan There’s a place / where grandma sat / on the porch / with a rocking chair / a big heart / and a smile that didn’t care / if your shoes were wet / if you feet were muddy / if you face was dirty / and when you were hurting / she’d pick you up / and carry you inside / in her big arms / she’d sit you on the table / where you never ever could sit / otherwise / and she’d pat / and dab / and whisper / it’s o.k / it’s alright / with a bandaid / stuck on just right / and she’d send you back out / into the world / and you’d run with a limp / but you’d soon forget / about the pain / there were games / to be played. That house was always so warm. When Poppy died / Grandma still kept it warm / she let us do things / that he never did / and she never got upset / or said / “Don’t slam the damn door!” / she never ever said / anything less than love. That house was always so warm. The yard was big / and the trees were bigger / we’d climb / and dangle stars from the limbs / and bells from the twigs / and we’d play outside / at that time of day / when it wasn’t quite dark / when it wasn’t quite light / and we’d hide and seek / and squeel and get giddy / running around / through the bells and stars. We’d go to Grandma’s after school / and run toward the smell / of the hot cakes / of the love / of Grandma’s perfume / and we opened that front gate / with pride / and a sigh / because it always made that same noise / to let us know / we were at the right house / it was home. We knew everyone wanted to live there / because that house was always so warm. People would look and smile / and stop and take a flower from the front / sometimes / the kids would steal / pickets from the fence / and play / rah / rah / rah / all the way home / like pirates / and prisoners / and war men / having fun / when things weren’t serious / and days were long / but never long enough / I knew / that they were taking a picket / home to their parents / so that they could start building a house / just like Grandma’s; because that house was always so warm. © ryan

Oil painting on canvas (sold). “Irish Cottage” shows life in Ireland many, many years ago. I saw an old photograph of this cottage and adapted the scene as I imagined it. The woman sits outside, catching a few rays of sunshine while her husband, most likely a fisherman takes a break. A small pile of peat is stacked against the wall and the thatched roof is in need of repair. Imagination is such a wonderful tool for an artist! Oil painting on canvas (original sold) I painted this scene of an Irish village several years ago, adapted from an old photograph dating from probably the late 1800’s to early 1900’s. The man with the cart is probably a trader, the young woman looks on while the elderly folk take in the sun and watch the activity in the village. Interesting to see the various buildings, from poor thatched cottages to well built stone (shops?) and wealthy mansions. In Ireland today, many of these building would still exist. I live in an old cottage which once had a thatched roof and probably looked pretty much like the one in the painting. The slate roofs can still be seen in some places and the shops and stores still look very much the same… double glazed windows replace the old wooden frames and inside its very modern but walk through any old Irish village or town and you will see that the old buildings are still there. Driving through an old village is a nightmare… the road is narrow and will swerve because, as in this painting, a building could jut out into the road. Slow down world!! Bring back the donkey and cart, I say!!! :-)

Taken at Cockington Village just outside Torquay in Devon UK. The ancient village is a real step back in time for the visitor and most of the centuries old houses have thatched roofs like this one, the Higher Lodge. Ponies and traps are available all through the Summer months for a scenic trip round the village and the friendly drivers are full of information about the historic village. Artwork from Ireland. I came across this little old cottage in The Aran Islands off the coast of County Clare/ County Galway on the west coast of Ireland. I’m sure there was a pot of tea brewing on the stove there many many years ago. These tiny fields are dating from The Great Irish Famine of the 1840’s Ireland. That’s the sea in the background. An abandoned cottage sits decaying and un-loved, amongst the flowers and weeds which now encroach upon the front door. I spotted this while taking a walk through the woodlands behind Armadale castle, on the Sleat of the Isle of Skye. I peered through the open door, and saw that the very narrow, and steep wooden steps leading to the upstairs, were very worn, which indicated that a long time ago, maybe a large family dwelled within, maybe several generations. The rooms were tiny, and very dark within. / My imagination ran riot thinking about the folk of days gone by and how they lived ! / Sadly, it is in such a dangerous state of decay that it is not safe to explore the interior. / Maybe my image will help this abandoned home live on a little longer ? Shot on a Canon EOS 40D, RAW file processed in Photoshop CS3, then I applied the Orton Effect. /
