  • Grandma’s Home by Nicole Ryan There’s a place / where grandma sat / on the porch / with a rocking chair / a big heart / and a smile that didn’t care / if your shoes were wet / if you feet were muddy / if you face was dirty / and when you were hurting / she’d pick you up / and carry you inside / in her big arms / she’d sit you on the table / where you never ever could sit / otherwise / and she’d pat / and dab / and whisper / it’s o.k / it’s alright / with a bandaid / stuck on just right / and she’d send you back out / into the world / and you’d run with a limp / but you’d soon forget / about the pain / there were games / to be played. That house was always so warm. When Poppy died / Grandma still kept it warm / she let us do things / that he never did / and she never got upset / or said / “Don’t slam the damn door!” / she never ever said / anything less than love. That house was always so warm. The yard was big / and the trees were bigger / we’d climb / and dangle stars from the limbs / and bells from the twigs / and we’d play outside / at that time of day / when it wasn’t quite dark / when it wasn’t quite light / and we’d hide and seek / and squeel and get giddy / running around / through the bells and stars. We’d go to Grandma’s after school / and run toward the smell / of the hot cakes / of the love / of Grandma’s perfume / and we opened that front gate / with pride / and a sigh / because it always made that same noise / to let us know / we were at the right house / it was home. We knew everyone wanted to live there / because that house was always so warm. People would look and smile / and stop and take a flower from the front / sometimes / the kids would steal / pickets from the fence / and play / rah / rah / rah / all the way home / like pirates / and prisoners / and war men / having fun / when things weren’t serious / and days were long / but never long enough / I knew / that they were taking a picket / home to their parents / so that they could start building a house / just like Grandma’s; because that house was always so warm. © ryan

  • Had a great adventure today – went for a drive to the forest for a ‘quick walk’ to take a few photos of the beautiful winter landscape – didn’t quite work out that way though!!! We ended up having to abandon the car in the forest car park as we couldn’t make it back up the frozen road to the top and the forest driveway that we had planned to return along was closed off with locked barriers – so ended up having to walk some extra 3 miles to the nearest village where we luckily caught the bus home! lol I’m sure someone suggested leaving the car at the top of the track and walking down …. still it was a fabulous day and have got some amazing shots in the forest to share! x This was taken along the road between Hamsterley Forest and Woodland Village on the walk back – must have been someone’s pride and joy once – and I’m sure those pigeon sheds would have held many a prize winning bird in their day.

  • Artwork from Ireland. I came across this little old cottage in The Aran Islands off the coast of County Clare/ County Galway on the west coast of Ireland. I’m sure there was a pot of tea brewing on the stove there many many years ago. These tiny fields are dating from The Great Irish Famine of the 1840’s Ireland. That’s the sea in the background. Camera: Kodak DC265 (old digital dating from 1999 …only 1.5million pixels…hence the pixelated look of the image) / This image has been colour enhanced digitally for more dramatic effect. • I took this today 7th June 2009. We had spent a lovely day at Ugbrooke House. Which is only ten minutes from our cottage. It is the home of Lord and Lady Clifford. It was an open day for the RNLI. We were so lucky with the weather, unlike last year when it rained the whole time. As we were leaving Ugbrooke House, there in front of us was this beautiful Thatched Cottage so I had to stop and get some shots and am pleased with the result. Thank you for looking. / Edited inRAW in Dynamic Photo HDR 1×3 finished in Picasa3. / BEST VIEWED LARGER

  • Recently, my family and I enjoyed a lovely week in North Yorkshire, staying near the coast but enjoying day long excursions out to surrounding countryside and beaches. On one of our days out, we were making our way to Dalby Forest to meet up with fellow Red Bubbler and dear friend Paul McGuire when we decided to stop in the beautiful and picturesque village of Thorton-le-dale, with its lovely parks and walks. Just down from the centre of the town is a beautiful walk along the Thornton Beck stream. Along this walk is this beautiful 17th century Thatch Cottage which has been the on countless jigsaws, chocolate boxes and tins, not to mention calendars. In fact, it has been said that it is the most photographed cottage ever. So I set out to try and catch a view that is not commonly seen, which is probably an impossible task. I noticed that on the other side of the bridge from the main road, there was a slip way into the stream. I went to see the view from that side, and this is the scene I found. I must point out that when I took these shots, it was raining and very windy, hence the movement. I do like this view very much. • Featured in Cottage Style / Featured in “Old Things – 3 per Day” We recently visited some dear friends who were living in Painswick, Gloucestershire, in England. Originally from America, they have lived in England for short periods of time (3 or 4 years) due to work. This was our last visit to their little cottage home in the lovely village, as they have now moved back to the states, but they are already planning to move back as soon as possible. We have enjoyed our frequent trips to visit them and this lovely old cottage. The cottage dates back almost 300 years (sometime in the 1700’s) and is a feature of the well known Tibbiwell Lane. It is as beautiful inside as it is outside. This door front scene was used as a magazine/catalogue cover for the company Scotts of Stow, and countless visitors to the village have taken photos of this beautiful and historic home. The property used to be two separate cottages but were combined at some unknown date. Please do click on the photo to view larger and please enjoy. This is a HDR image combining 6 bracketed shots using Photomatix Pro for Macs. Slight adjustments in lighting and tone were done using the enhanced details tool. Canon EOS-1Ds Mark ll / 28-300mm IS zoom lens / f/9 / 1/250, 1/160/, 1/80, 1/40, 1/20, 1/10 / ISO 400
