As this week Osaka holds its yearly Tenjin Festival, I decided to upload some of my photographs from the festival that I took last year. It’s Osaka’s biggest festival, held on the 24-25th July every year. It’s a full-on event with practice runs for several days before the actual festival. All the neighbourhoods have their own teams and costumes, and they parade and carry portable shrines through the streets. I spent most of the day at the main shrine where there was continual music, mainly a trance-inducing drumming made by a metal hammer on a metal dish. It was broken up by groups of men running into the shrine area with these huge heavy portable shrines which they seem to heft mainly to prove their bravado. Very raucous and exciting. The whole thing then takes to huge floats on the river in the evening for a firework finale. If you want to see more photos, go to: http://jenny-hall.smugmug.com/gallery/1710589

My four kids are going to be Goldilocks and the Three Bears for Halloween this year. I’ve been diligently working on their cosutmes, hand sewing bits onto existing sweatshirts and dance costume to make them look more like their characters. I finished Goldilocks (that wasn’t too hard because I had an old dance costume that I slightly altered so she could wear a long sleeve tee (or two) underneath), and I’m almost done with my bears (brown hoodies with ears and bellies and belly buttons sewn on). So anyway, my faves of the day reflect Goldilocks and the Three Bears! Bella by linifer / No, Like this by girlinthestars /

It’s about Chinese Spring Festival. It seems many people think lion dance, dragon dance, etc. are (major) Chinese cultural elements. Well, there are a few Chinese who dance it, and foreigners. But they don’t always dance it during the year. And the dances are rarely to see. Before the Festival, it’s interesting to do some review on the Chinese cultural elements. No time to write much, just list some ancient Chinese visual art: Tang Dynasty (618 – 907): Painting 1, Painting 2. Five Dynasties (907-960, China was not united then): Painting 1, Painting 2, Painting 3. Song Dynasty (960-1279): Painting 1, Painting 2, Painting 3. These were the Chinese aesthetics, costume… Season’s greeting to all!

As some of you may know, I’m now doing a bit of teaching at the Brisbane Institute of Art. I have an intermediate class for digital photography, and we’re looking for a model who will give us an hour or two on a Wednesday morning…..possibly sometime in May/June. The model we’re looking for needs to be animated, expressive, and have a good sense of humour. I have 4 students who would LOVE to shoot some portraits, poses…anything, really. No need to be nude, and no need to even be female…..just able to follow direction, and able to stand still for long enough for 5 shutters to go…. It’ll be at my studio in Sumner Park, and I’ve got costumes and props, but if you have your own, please let me know what you’d like to bring. Contact me at melbrackstone at gmail dot com with a photo or two of yourself, and let me know if you’re available for a Wednesday morning. This might be able to be changed to a diff day/time…...

So I got invited to a very big Halloween costume ball (the biggest in the city) and the group I am going with are going with a Wizard of OZ theme. To give you an idea, this ball has a very big costume contest and some people spend MONTHS on their costumes for it. (Once for example, I went and a group of people went as different parts of the titanic, which, when they got together assembled into a gigantic ship). Anyway, I am not even going to try and compete on that level, but I’d like to not look pathetic either lol. By the time I was invited, all the major characters for the Oz theme were already accounted for (Dorothy, the Witches, The Scarecrow, Cowardly Lion, even a Flying Monkey). I was asked if I could be Auntie Em (Yawn). The idea of dressing up as a farm woman from the 30s does not appeal to my dramatic self, so I got out of it by saying I’d be the tornado. Of course, everyone is now excited about that but I am not a costuming genius and I now have a very short amount of time to put together a tornado costume. So I am appealing to my redbubble friends to help me on this one. Keep in mind I am not a seamstress and anything beyond sewing a button is beyond my skills. I was thinking of donning a black dress of some sort and attaching something around the dress that would appear like wind or storm clouds or lightning etc??? Or I could add black streamers or ? and of course I will have to dishevel my hair in some sort of fun way. I would like it to go up and go all swirly but I think it may be too long and heavy. Please add your ideas and help a girl out! lol / Lynnette

I took possession of the keys for Studio 3 at the historic Scarab Club in downtown Detroit the other day. These wonderful artist studios are a rare commodity as tenants usually move in and retain them for years and years. Studio 3 was being leased by Jeanne Bieri who was the tenant for 5 years. Each studio has a loft, Shelby already has plans on what to do with that to make working and the occasion overnight more comfortable. The remaining portion of each studio boasts two story walls and large open widows to allow light to flood the space. Studio 3’s windows open up to a view of the College for Creative Studios and the Detroit Institute of Arts. The College for Creative Studies is where Shelby hopes to obtain her own art degree from so having Studio 3 right next door a place she can work and crash is a very cool thing. A short video to be uploaded soon showing off the space prior to moving anything in and I will toss a new one up after the dust has settled. While traditionally the artists studios have been used for the purpose of the visual arts I am hopeful that once it I will find the creative spirit to complete several book I started such as “Whiskey and Lace”, “outcasts of Conservatopia”, and “Her Name Was Ginger” to mention a few. Here is my open invitation to anyone visiting the Detroit area: Stop in a have a visit to not only my Studio but the Scarab Club as well, the history, the beams in the member lounge signed by the likes of Norman Rockwell and Diego Rivera and more are very cool. Who knows you may even decide to become a member and have some fun yourself.

As most of you know, I do several other ‘crafty’ things besides painting. I make beaded jewelry, wearable strapless Faerie Wings, and Faerie Masks. I wanted to take a moment so share part of my crafty side with you. (My appologies – with my computer at home down, most of these pics are from my crappy camera phone – unfortunately a lot of the detail is lost) Faerie Masks / I call these Faerie Masks for a few reasons. 1 – they look as if they crawled right out of the Land of Faerie, 2 – when making them alone, one or many faeries will help to inspire the look of a mask, and 3 – when making them for and with an individual, I can bring out their inner faerie. Just this past weekend, I started a collection of Holiday themed masks. All of my masks are wearable and make a great addition to any costume – whether it be for Halloween, a Convention, Masquerade, or other themed event – but they also make WONDERFUL decorations for your home. Hang them on the wall, make them part of a centerpiece, tie them onto a candelabra, or, my favorite idea, use them on a holiday wreath instead of a big bow! You can even use them as a very cool and very different Christmas Tree topper! They make AMAZING alternative holiday decorations for those of you who celebrate the Solstice or Yule. They can also be made with colors that work for any time of the year!! This collection is being made for sale at a local craft fair on December 10th. What doesn’t sell there will be available to the general public and I will then take custom orders as well. (I take PayPal and will ship around the world – masks range from $30 – $50 US) I have also included pictures of masks from some previous collections and sales. / Faerie of the Winter Solstice / For sale @ Columbia Craft Fair 12/10 / Last Harvest Satyr / For sale @ Columbia Craft Fair 12/10 / Yuletide Faery / For sale @ Columbia Craft Fair 12/10 / Sugar Plum Faery / For sale @ Columbia Craft Fair 12/10 / Blue Frost Faery / For sale @ Columbia Craft Fair 12/10 / Lord of Samhain / For sale @ Columbia Craft Fair 12/10 / Lady of Samhain / For sale @ Columbia Craft Fair 12/10 / Baccus / Personal collection – for my sister / Faery Queen of Winter / Sold / Faery King of Winter / Personal Collection / Faery of Storms / Available for sale @ The Queen of Cups in Portland, OR / Lord of Fire / Available for sale @ The Queen of Cups in Portland, OR / Faery of Spring / Sold / Lord of Fire & Faery of Storms / My husbnad and I at the FaerieWorlds Bad Faerie Masquerade / King & Queen Faeries of Winter / My husband and I at the FaerieWorlds Good Faerie Masquerade – Awarded King & Queen of the Good Faerie Ball! Bergey (August 26, 1901 – 1952) was an American illustrator who painted cover art for a wide diversity of magazines and paperback books. Today Bergey is best recognized for creating the iconic cover of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes for Popular Library at the height of his career in 1948. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Bergey attended Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts from 1921 to 1926. He initially went to work in the art department of the Philadelphia’s Public Ledger, and he drew the comic strip Deb Days in 1927. Early in his career, Bergey contributed many covers to the pulp magazines of publisher Fiction House. By the mid 1930s, Bergey made a home and studio in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and he married in 1935. Many of his paperbacks are now cult classics, some featuring hidden self-portraits. Bergey died suddenly in 1952 in a doctor’s office with family at his side. The cover of La Paree Stories (1935) (adapted from the original ‘Pretty as A Peacock) is in the Public Domain due to failure to comply with required formalities (ie. 1923 through 1977 published without a copyright notice). / Original Image can be seen here and here / / / ! / My zazzle gallery has a premium range of gifts that are suitable for people of all ages and tastes: an eclectic collection of unusually imaginative, hip and sometimes beautiful designs.
