This tiny little church is at the summit of the Falzarego Pass near Cortina d’Ampezzo in the Dolomites of northern Italy. The design of the church seems to mimic the shape of peak of Sass di Stria in the background. To the far left are the permanently snowy peaks of the Marmolada massif.
Apologies to those people who went to view this image previously only to find that it had vanished. I’ve been having problems getting files to load properly on RB (nowhere else) and so had to delete images when things went wrong. This is the bell tower of the tiny Chapel at the summit of the Giau Pass, near Cortina d’Ampezzo in the Italian Dolomites. Behind the tower is the conical peak of Ra Gusela and in the far back left, we can see the rifugio at the summit of Nuvolau.
This is one of the views from the first of our two campsites on this year’s trip – Camping Dolomiti – can thoroughly recommend it. This is evening light on the Pomagagnon massif. We are situated in the Ampezzo valley, just south of Cortina d’Ampezzo, the famous ski resort. The desire to take home mountains such as these (not literally, of course, I only collect small rocks) is what started my interest in photography, more years ago than a lady (or even a lady marmot) should admit to! ;o)

Scanning old negatives from my archive, I have found a photograph of Cinque Torri (Five Towers) and Tofanas taken very late in the afternoon. I liked the combination of dark clouds and remaining summer haze that made the background looking very flat like in a painting. Just before clouds covered the sun completely, last rays fell on the Cinque Torri, a group of rocks very popular by climbers. To complete the feeling I had about the picture, I’ve applied ‘colored pencils’ filter in post-processing of this photograph. Dolomiti, Italy. August 2001. Canon EOS 500N, Sigma 28-135. Post-processing: retouch, sharpening, colored pencils, color enhancement, blend modes. Detail of the image showing the ‘color pencils’ effect:

Tofana (or the Tofane) is a well-known group in Dolomiti, Italy. Its three main peaks are Tofana di Mezzo (3244 m), Tofana di Dentro (3238 m) and Tofana di Rozes (3225 m). This picture shows Tofana di Rozes seen from the slopes close to Nuvolau, over the valley running from Cortina d’Ampezzo (to the right) to the Falzarego Pass. Seen in the evening light, it is not difficult to guess why this top is called Tofana di Rozes... August 2001. Canon EOS 500N, Sigma 28-135. Post-processing: retouch, noise reduction, sharpening, color pencils, color enhancement, blend modes, burn.
Recently an old advertising hoarding was removed to reveal this wonderfully preserved poster for an Ford Cortina, which must be at least 30 years old. The building is a classic 1930’s cinema.. which is now derelict and soon to be redeveloped. So this is a contemporary image very much about the past existing briefly in the present. I feel the 70’s air vent top right is also critical. (Update.. the poster is now hanging in tatters and is barely recognisable. So for a few short weeks the 70’s came back to Lancaster.. man !)
Fanes is a Dolomite group located just next to well-known Tofana group, close to Falzarego Pass, Italy. This photograph shows Lagazuoi (on the left side, in shadows) and Fanis (central in the background, mostly sunlit) subgroups, with Col dei Bos (sunlit ridge) in foreground, as seen from a path close to Rifugio Averau. August 2001. Dolomiti, Italy. Canon EOS 500N, Sigma 28-135. Post-processing: retouch, sharpening, colored pencils, color enhancement, blend modes, burn.
This is the Pomagagnon Massif as seen from the riverbank of the Torrente Boite next to our caravan pitch at Camping Dolomiti, just south of Cortina d’Ampezzo, Dolomites, Italy! Oooh…. wish I could have brought these rocks home with me! ;o) Canon EOS 5D MkII with Canon EF 24-105mm L IS f/4
