I had to share this with you …. The following is the 2007 winning entry from an annual / contest at Texas A&M University calling for the most / appropriate definition of a contemporary term. This / year’s term was Political Correctness. / / The winner wrote, / / “Political Correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a / delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted / by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth / the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick / up a turd by the clean end.”

Sorry for this folks … but I just want to have my say. I agree that a lot of crap (read war, bloodshed, torture and inhumanity) has been perpetrated and is being perpetrated still in the name of politics and religion, but this is NOT the place to discuss it. Unless they’ve taken up a recent membership, it is highly unlikely that anyone in a position of power (no matter how misguided you feel they may be) is ever going to see any of your political statements here on Redbubble. I’m not even saying that you should sit back and let the injustices you see go unanswered, vox populi and all that but can you please do it somewhere it will do some good and not here on the ‘bubble.

  • I stand corrected!

Thanks to Eyeshoot and her description at this lovely image, I discovered that I was misinformed about a Japanese custom and spread this misinformation here on RB by giving one of my images the wrong title and a wrong description. As I got quite some response on the custom that I wrongly described, I would like to share the correct version with you, which is now also to be found next to the image itself, together with a new title. I’m talking about this image: / The title of this photo used to be: Say a prayer for me, with the following description: / °°° / A delicate branch of cherry blossoms, symbol of spring, symbol of new life, carrying someones hope, someones prayers. Such a beautiful tradition in Japan… / °°° But it seems to be that I was misinformed and that the little paper on the tree is not a prayer, but a bad fortune. Here I found the following description of this custom: / °°° / Omikuji are fortunes written on strips of paper available at most Shinto shrines in Japan. There are 12 levels of fortunes, ranging from Great Blessing to Great Curse. When the fortune is bad, it is customary for the person to fold up the strip of paper and tie it to a pine tree branch at the temple grounds, thus freeing the person from the bad fortune. In the event of the fortune being good, the bearer should keep it. / °°° / As you can see, they don’t only use pine trees for it.

It seems that there is politics here on Redbubble. Or so I have been told. I am therefore establishing THe RedBubble Human And Artists Rights Commission!!! Its apolitical, aPolitically correct, and just a lekker place for me and my neophytes (read mostly family and friends) to further my personal agendas! (and some of those of my neophytes that are really nice to me). This is an organisation with no manifesto and no political agenda (other than me)(and you if you are very nice to me) It has one main goal and that is to get one of my (and any of the said neophytes – you know nice and all that) shots onto the front page. Who wants to join? You can join in the forum post! No joining here!!! / Paste this link! / http://www.redbubble.com/groups/redbubble/forums/4/topics/3638-rhaarc-new-organisation I guess thats the first rule! Damn. I didn’t want rules!

  • Just few thoughts about correct white balance...

I have read many articles and reviews about white balance in photographs. It seems to me that the main point is that it is important to achieve colors so that white on photograps has to look like neutral white on sunny midday. And when lighting conditions are different, we should compensate this in our cameras or color tune photos later with photo editing software. My opinion is that this may be true partially. I believe this is true in portrait photography and when shooting in daylight conditions. This could be true when I take a photo in different lighting conditions and if I want it to look like it was shot on a sunny day. What is true in other cases? I believe that photography one way or another is a way to capture a moment, one single moment. This moment can create emotions or show emotions. Many possibilities … My point is that white does not have to look white all the time. Because after all it is a moment that is captured. For example cloudy day and a wall that usually looks white looks blueish – but that´s ok. Why? Because in that moment that wall is blueish and this is natural, no need to change the way things just are. If I want to change color tones and balance in order to express something then this is OK but it is not the same.

I’m not sure of the best place to voice this opinion, but this is a very important issue to anyone who wants to either be found or use the search function within Redbubble. After checking a few search terms it has become clear to me that there is little enforcement of a “tag what you have…and only that” policy. Just about any term i’ve searched for has always given me far more results that had nothing to do with my search, then it has given me decent results. The end result of this is that the search function does not work, due to members spamming tags that have nothing to do with the works that they have uploaded and this will drive serious buyers away simply frustrated at the results that they have found. Redbubble is one of the kindest communities that i am a member of, but i want my works to be found with tags that match the subject matter and need to consider how much effort i can put into a system that has little in the way of policing terms within tags. I’m not much for heavy handed policies but the truth is that it’s up to us as members to make this as good as it can be and if we do not honestly tag our works for what they represent one of two things will happen….Redbubble will fail or they will need to enforce a heavy handed tagging format. I throw this out for consideration and please correct me if i’m wrong Bruce
