Mummification was a very important element of the Papuan culture, the preserved body of a village’s big man, an elder, chief or a great warrior was regarded as a link with ancestors. The process involved hanging the corpse in a specially build house over a fire, and smoking it continuously for up to a year. Indonesians regarded the tradition as barbaric, prohibited the procedure, confiscated and destroyed most of the mummies in the area. This is one of three survivors in the Baliem valley. Photo: a real smoked Papuan 300 years old mummy. / Smoke and glow (embers) added digitally. Baliem valley, 15 km from Wamena, Irian Jaya (Indonesian Papua).

Model – Tayla Louise Pentacon Six TL + Kodak Portra 160VC / Shot in the Dandenong Ranges back in January during a ridiculously bad Summer. But then she got to spend half the time in the water or the shade whilst I sweated my face off and went purple and DIED, so who says I don’t take care of my models? / Alternative version of this image can be seen on my dA site here Copyright 2008 Harmony Nicholas

WELL! here we have a recent photo of my unfinished painting which I have been working on under the wise eyes of Paul D Robertson, / / http://www.redbubble.com/people/pauldrobertson / www.pauldrobertson.com / My mentor and multi award winning local artist, who has been teaching me so much about painting and drawing and so much more during the last few weeks that I will be forever in his debt. / The painting, ‘Exordium of terminus’, translated from Latin to English means ‘The beginning of the end’. titled this on account of thoughts of death and despair running through my mind as I paint. So far a lot of work has gone in to this, I posed for the photo which I’m using as a reference, yes, that’s me in there, and over the weeks I’ve primed and gridded up the canvas, then started working on the image which I feel is the most emotional dramatic and darkest photograph of me I’ve seen, its awesome.. * contemplates uploading the photograph too * / When all the work on this painting is finally complete I will upload a photo of it big enough to sell prints of too, so, that’ll be cool. In the final image’s description I will be putting one of my poems, ’ Who needs a razor’ / Check out My Latest Series

Living Dead Girl
by Rhana GriffinCome hold me here / now in the dark. / Warm this corpse / that is my living heart. For though it beats / it cannot feel / slashed with wor…
We have all wandered through our dark places hoping to find someone who could reignite our candle and chase away the shadows. We reveal much of ourselves through our art and our words, and so it must be said that this poem comes not from this time – a time where I am happy and loved – but a time from long ago.

This is a photo I took of some very unusual flowers that grow in the dark of the forest. My friend Dave discovered them on his farm and asked me to come photograph them. Wow.. I have never seen anything like it. Apparently, they are called Indian Pipe, Ghost Flower or Corpse Flower and they are a true flower! We had originally thought they were some kind of fungus, like mushrooms, because of the white opaque color but the reason they are completely white is because they lack chlorophyll which is what makes plants green and allows them to photosynthesize light in order to absorb nutrients. They have a direct relationship with the surrounding trees as they get their food source through their root system from the tree roots… and to do that they utilize a fungus to transport the nutrients. Interesting huh?! I love discovering and seeing new things, this is what makes photography so fulfilling for me. / I took the picture without a flash and in the low light the photo seemed to be a bit noisy so I used my digital painting program to smooth and blend away the noise. I also added in highlights and shading to emphasize the ‘ghostly’ appearance. All the work was done using a mouse so I have about 10 hrs into the image. Hope you all enjoy and thanks for any comments that come my way! / /

I will grow daisies for him, up and through the ground, though I have always been fond of lilies. The soft gentle touches of the earthworms over my skin are a comfort, wiggling fingers that breed sensations against skin that unwittingly turns the color of bleached cobalt. ... It is not such a bad existence, however, feeding the earth. Truly I could ask for no better purpose than to become a garden, for at least a garden is free to love the air, the wind, and the rain… ~excerpt from a dark but beautifully written story by a dear friend of mine. (my main artistic influence is rather more glaring in this one than I expected. Ah well…it happens.)

Hi Everyone, / I found these beautiful little white plants in the forest while out taking photos. I researched to find out what they were and discovered this beautiful Native American story which tells of this plant and its origins. The Indian Pipe plant in this image is a photo which I took and I spent some time photo-shopping to get the image to coincide with the story. The indian chief photo is a public domain image and the story was found on angelfire.com. I wrote Terry and asked permission to use the story with the artwork ahead of time. Thanks in advance for looking and I hope you enjoy! The Origin of the Indian Pipe Plant / as told by John Rattling-Gourd Before selfishness crept into the world – that was a long time ago – the Cherokee people were happy and peaceable. They used the same hunting grounds and fishing grounds as their neighbors. They fished in the same streams and hunted in the same stands of forest. There were no arguments about boundaries and there were no arguments about fishing rights. But this was before Men became greedy. All this changed when Men learned to quarrel. / / The first quarrel that arose was between the Cherokee and a neighboring tribe. It was a long and bitter quarrel, so bitter that the chiefs of the two tribes decided to meet in council to try and settle their trouble. And so they met, one day, and they smoked the peace pipe in solemn council, but they did not stop quarreling. A puff on the peace pipe and a bitter word was the way it went. Days passed and still the council sat and smoked and quarreled. / / Now the Great Spirit was much displeased that the Indians should quarrel while smoking the pipe of peace. And the Great Spirit said, ” I shall have to do something toyou men that will show you that People should live together in peace, and that when Indians smoke the pipe, it must be done in peace.” / / The Great Spirit looked down at the old Men sitting in all that smoke. And he saw how gray they looked and how their heads hung down in weariness because it had been many nights since they had slept. And so he turned the old Men who smoked there in the council into small silvery gray flowers, their heads bent over and their petals hoary. / / If you should find one in the woods and turn it so that the head is down and the stem up, you will see that it looks like an Indian pipe, and so it is called to this day. But in the woods where they are often seen clustered together, they appear to be little gray People sitting in long council. / / Now after the Great Spirit had changed the quarreling Indians into flowers and set them out in the forest, he noticed that the smoke from their pipes still hung heavy in the air above the place where the council had been. So he gathered up the smoke and draped it over the mountains as a reminder. And he left it there until such time as all Men shall learn to live peace together.

“Although the weather forecast wasn’t looking good, the excavation was ahead of schedule. As we started to remove the giant tree trunk that had been buried for centuries, there was an enormous loud crunch as the old tree split down the centre. What was revealed to us struck everyone speechless…......” / /
