  • Snowy Owl SC
    by Anthony Hedger

    US$5.98–US$136.80

I think this is the first time I was able to get as close as I was to this beautiful fellow. I was so pleased when I uploaded it onto the computer and saw the results. I do believe it is one of my better ones. My shot -Snowy Owl has been featured in the following four groups: In the Core [C.O.R.E.] Group In the Zoophoria Group In Animal photography Group And in the All That Is Nature Group Believe me this has had selective colouring on the shot it is just that the owl is mainly white. The original shot was taken in The Cornish Birds of Prey Centre & Animal Park in Cornwall. I have been playing about with it again; a crop here to focus tight on his beautiful eyes and selective colouring there and this is the result which I love. I hope you like it and thank you for viewing. The selective colouring was made in Photoshop Elements 6 NIKON D60 DSLR / F-stop f/9 / Exposure time 1/500 sec / ISO speed 100 / Aperture priority / Focal length 190 mm on a 70 – 300 mm Nikon lens This was the original colour shot. Perhaps you may like this version? All the materials contained may not be reproduced, copied, edited, published, transmitted or uploaded in any way without my permission. • Cornish Highlanders
    by rodsfotos

    US$4.32–US$98.80

During my recent holiday to Cornwall, I was going down to Cape Cornwall, a few miles East of Land’s End on the North coast. It was a beautiful late afternoon and on the way down to the Cape I looked over to my right and was delighted to see five highland cattle grazing, my immediate thoughts, as a Scot were, you’re not the only Scot in Cornwall. In the background the Headland is know as Kenidjack Castle headland, you may just be able to see the ruins of the iron age fortress Kenidjack Castle high on the headland, well it certainly stands out viewed at the full resolution, PLEASE VIEW LARGER Nikon D300 / 18 – 70 zoom @ 44mm / F11 for 1/80 sec / WB set to Sunny / CP Filter

based on Madron Holy Well in South Cornwall. The tradition of hanging offerings of flowers and rags and ribbons is still in practice today amongst Pagans in the UK. This image was inspired by the beauty and fertility of may when the bluebells and Horse Chestnut is in bloom and mayday (Beltane) is the traditional time for well dressings and leaving offerings to the water spirits and fairies.

  • Port Isaac
    by RedHillDigital

    US$4.12–US$94.24

Port Isaac The centuries old village and harbour of Port Isaac is situated on the Atlantic coast, mid-way between Newquay and Bude, Cornwall, UK. From the Middle Ages until the 1850s, Port Isaac was a busy port, handling stone, coal, timber and pottery. With the advent of the railways, it became principally a fishing port. UK TV viewers will know it as the location for the classic period drama ‘Poldark’ and more recently for the drama/comedy series ‘Doc Martin’, starring Martin Clunes. Long before the pier was built in the 16th century, the village had a smuggling past and was associated with a gentleman(!) by the name of Cruel Copinger! This shot was taken 21 years ago on Fujichrome slide film, and recently scanned using a Plustek OpticFilm 7200. Since being chosen to represent the Devon and Cornwall group, this has become my most viewed shot on this site with over 350 views to date and still rising! Date: 13th July 1987

I’m placing this image into the “Freedom to Shine” group, as I think this is one of my better images, and it reflects a lot of the Australian Heritage and way of life. =======================

  • Tamar Dawn
    by Wayne Holman

Dawn across the Tamar river on the border between Cornwall and Devon in the UK. The road bridge was opened in 1961, the rail bridge, built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, probably the best engineer of the Victorian era, was opened in 1859 and is still in daily use. / I took this shot on a cold November morning from the Cornish side of the river just as the sun was rising and didn’t realise until later that I had also captured a seagull in the frame. • Cornish Rex Cat

  • Valuable metal such as tin and copper only make up a small percentage of the earths crust. For these to be viably collected they have to be concentrated by natural processes such as alluvial deposits or by geological processes such as the local granite formation. In this part of Cornwall, the rich metal deposits are associated with the local granite formation. While the granite was hot magma, the minerals became concentrated in high temperature liquids and gases, which as the temperature fell formed mineral veins. Due to the igneous geology of this area, mineral lodes of tin, copper, iron, zinc, lead and to a lesser degree, silver were formed. All of these metals were in sufficient amounts to be mined. Tin has been produced and traded in Cornwall for over two thousand years. Trading occurred in pre history times but from this period little is known. There are legends of the Phoenicians trading with the Cornish for tin.
