HA! / Ring-Tailed Lemur / Lemur catta Unlike many other lemur species which live in rainforests, ring-tailed lemurs inhabit the dry forests of southern Madagascar. They are highly social, living in groups of up to 30 animals. The striped tail is an important social signal and is used in ‘stink-fights’ between males. The Fota group is free ranging. Threats to survival include hunting and wholesale destruction of their forest home. Ring-tailed lemurs are important for attracting tourists to Madagascar.

St. Finn Barre’s Cathedral. Cork, Ireland. The cathedral was built in the late 1800s, but by that time, Christian worship had already been offered on the site for 700 years. Many people died there as it was beseiged and fought over. I like to think the dog, and those carved guardians on the wall, are keepers of the many souls which had been lost, or which were buried in the cemetery.

*For Affordable Canvas Prints please click here Carriganass Castle is a typical 16th century Irish tower house, with a 4-storey tower surrounded by a 14-foot high outer curtain wall or bawn. The main tower is elegantly perched 40 foot up on a rock overhanging the Ovane river, and has 4 corner turrets. The main entrance to the castle was via a gate in the north wall of the bawn, which had 4 corner towers, the main tower being set into the west wall of the bawn. The castle is now in ruins, with parts of the main tower collapsed, but it is in relatively good condition. The townland of Carriganass is located near the village of Kealkill in West Cork three miles from Bantry Bay. The castle, built by an O’Sullivan Beare chieftain around 1540, is the best surviving structure of the clan. Canon EOS 400D 18-55mm lens

Gougane Barra (Irish: Guagán Barra, meaning “Barra’s retreat enclosed by mountains”) is a settlement, west of Macroom in County Cork, Ireland. / FEATURED in: / All Water in Motion, April ‘09 / Historic Churches, April ‘09 / First Things, July ‘09 / Rural Around The Globe, July ‘09 with thanks The name Gougane Barra comes from Saint Finbarr, who is said to have built a monastery on an island in the lake nearby during the 6th century. The present ruins date from around 1700 when a priest called Denis O’Mahony retreated to the island. During the times of the Penal Laws, Gougane Barra’s remoteness meant that it became a popular place for the celebration of the Roman Catholic Mass.
