  • The resort of Agios Gordios or Aghios Gordios is on the west coast of Corfu, Greece. Agios Gordios is a relatively small resort with a long sandy beach, and is a real find. There is plenty to do with an assortment of Tavernas and Restaurants scattered along the narrow high street, and along the beach. The beach is one of the most popular beaches in Corfu; the sandy beach is surrounded by impressive rocky formations. Corfu is the most northerly of the Ionian Islands. It is a green and beautiful place where the pace of life is not too taxing. BEST VIEWED LARGER Related shots can be found at Corfu or Greece or Eastern Meditteranean. • A shot of the beach at the base of the cliff in Peroulades, Corfu, Greece. The shot was taken from one of the outside restaurant tables dotted along the edge of the cliff (a great place to have a Greek salad and a beer). Corfu is the most northerly of the Ionian Islands. It is a green and beautiful place where the pace of life is not too taxing. BEST VIEWED LARGER Related shots can be found at Corfu or Greece or Eastern Meditteranean. • Fishing boat on a beach in Corfu, on a wintry afternoon. This is a one-shot HDR processed image. / . / Nikon D70 / Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G

  • / Corfu’s spectacular north eastern coastline hosts intimate white pebbly coves, glittering turquoise waters and stunning views reaching out over the sea towards Albania. Corfu offers a combination of cosmopolitan and time honoured Greece, from the livelier resorts of Kassiopi and Ipsos to the elegant capital of Corfu town, to outlying villages steeped in Greek tradition. / Featured in group Colors of Water. My first feature from all.

  • Just one of many abandoned houses around the villages in Corfu

  • Another amazing Olive Grove, i just adored the light and shadow here

  • / / / Corfu Island is steeped in history and perennially connected to the history of Greece from the beginning of Greek mythology. Its Greek name, Kerkyra or Korkyra, is connected to two powerful water symbols: Poseidon, god of the sea and Asopos, an important Greek mainland river. According to myth, Poseidon fell in love with the beautiful nymph Korkyra, daughter of Asopus and river nymph Metope, and abducted her, as was the custom among gods of the era’s myths – Zeus himself was a serial offender. Poseidon brought her to the hitherto unnamed island and, in marital bliss, offered her name to the place: Korkyra. The sunsets in Corfu are the most beautiful to see on the top of one mountain. Guess,on which one?.

  • Nissaki bay in Corfu.

  • Corfu Greece, is the most popular of the Ionian Islands. It is a very green island and a mixture of the civilizations that have passed through at various times. And how blue will be blue, this is well known in this Island also. The town of Kerkyra impresses and charms the visitor. Flooded with sights, Corfu is a small paradise on Earth. From Paleokastritsa to Kanoni, from the Achillion to Pontikonissi and the Corfu’s northern coast, one will find crystal water scenic coves greenery and vegetation that ‘sinks’ into the deep blue sea. This photo is taken in Dassia.

  • Lazing on one of the small beaches in Kassiopi. Kassiopi is a lively resort at the North East corner of Corfu. A charming little fishing village, with a traditional port. Tourism has had its influence, but you can still find local fishermen bringing home the morning catch down at the harbour. Above the town are the remains of Kassiopi Castle. The remains overlook the harbour and continue around the headland. The castle has Roman foundations but the visible remains above the ground are Byzantine. The castle was subsequently fortified further by the Venetians, and survived sieges from the Ottoman Turks in the 1500’s. Today the castle is mainly ruinous, but parts of the walls can be seen from the coastal road around the headland. / You can walk among the ruins and the top ramparts offer an excellent view of the Albanian coastline. Recent efforts are being made for its restoration. BEST VIEWED LARGER Related shots can be found at Corfu or Greece or Eastern Meditteranean. Featured in : ImageWriting : 4 Sep 09

Best in Full Size Our visit to Greece was all too short … this particular image is representative of all of beautiful Corfu … taken from the terrace of the Paleokastritsa Monastery in July of 2005 with the Olympus C-5000 zoom. I’ve been playing with this image, off and on, for months so am not at all certain at this point what different things I’ve done to it. Pretty sure there’s HDR in there somewhere, with the original hand-held image duplicated a few times and put through Photomatix. I did a lot of hand painting … in particular of the flowers in the foreground … but then I think an Orton sort of blurred the details, so I went back and re-painted the white flowers. Also, several texture layers … one actually behind the water area (which was miserably blown out) to give it life, and one or two over the image as well. Not to mention some work in Levels and some Dodging and Burning. A labor of love, as they say, as the trip to Greece and Corfu were a dream come true!!! My thanks to CGTextures, Princess of Shadows of Deviant Art, and Ghostbones on Flickr for the textures.
