The very elusive pygmy seahorse. If you only knew how difficult these animals are to find you would be so impressed with this shot. Nikon D200 (underwater) / 105mm VR macro

A crab nibbles away at a limpet under one of Melbourne’s piers. This pylon at Rye pier is covered with a brightly coloured sponge. If you look closely you can see some of the junk carelessly discarded by people, it litters the sea floor. A bit sad really.

This drawing has been my biggest challenge to date. I chose the scene and large size to help me learn colored pencils and patience. Nearly 60 hours spread out over 13 months has taught me valuable lessons. There are a dozen species of coral, five species of fish, and several other animals. I deliberately chose species native to the Great Barrier Reef to ensure they all would be found in the same area in real life. To read about the process of creating this drawing and descriptions of each species, please take a look at my blog. Many of the species found in coral reefs are endangered because of the delicate balance of the water chemistry and temperature. 30”x15” Prismacolor colored pencil on BFK Rives 100% cotton paper, 2009. Original available.
I took this from on the Great Barrier Reef, Australia. A fish swimming all alone in the ocean!
