An image very much on the lines of DEATH OF SELF, and inspired by similar considerations. The subject was a metal corkscrew, made to couple with itself and evolve through many digital generations.. I’d thought: if metals could have sex,what would it look like? The debt to H R Giger is obvious. DOG EAT DOG Out there, beyond the abyss of night / Beyond the lightlessness that lies behind my own / Eye – worse, my inner eye – / A dog is howling. / I know the black orb of its stare / A globe of satin, you might say of it; but only if some / Stray ray, lost in a forlorn expanse of rubble and / Scrubland shade, could catch it first. / Otherwise there’s nothing, beyond the taint of / Nothing, or what is arid and shattered and forfeited and / Essence of dog. I feel the reflex of its throat: / A taut, fortuitous clench of matter, / Pursuing the unenlightened purpose of the flesh, / Bellowing, hour after hour, because it cannot know better. / An autocracy of connected nerves, blazing beneath / The skin, like fireworks / To an ancient purpose, spinning out the generations, / Spanning the centuries with rank immediacies. / There is no greyness in the life of a beast, / No room for mitigation. It’s not the bite that scares me most / Nor yet uncritical love, doting without thought, / A hopeless animal loyalty which I can’t reciprocate / (And yes, that – that alone, inane – must give me shame) / But rather, the perfection of the bullet form / Of a beast: a muzzle on pistons / On flanks geared to indomitable lungs: / Where great incisors spark to the heart’s dynamo track / Meshing with a darkness in me – that void for which I fear / To crave: some canker within the lonely, loveless, secret self / Of all men, one that sucks its salt from blood: / Not prim civility, not decorous failure, / Not lame equivocation, nor a mealy compromise – / Not anything that keeps us sugar-sweet, and / Acquiescent. And down there, fawning up. / My ancestry is an iron clamour. / Transfiguration of power / From brute, mute bulk / Lately inanimate, or merely dead: cracked bone and marrow / And sinew for a gouging mouth, but now / All meshed, a frenzy of livid wire, / A spark that burns through an age, into the scarred / Hide of this old world, and surmounts nothing. One day, when you and I are gone, when / Conscience has succumbed, / When oceans boil, and the sea gives up its dead, / A dog will bark, beneath the furnace of the sun. / A duet of fools they’ll be: one on high, one far below, / Raging at each other / From vanity of self-interest, the imperative to survive. / Two faces older than time, both in a frenzy / At the need not to die, out to buy / Time without end – as the life flames from each one’s brazen mask. / For, as a life closes (if life exists just for itself), / All the wide celestial sphere dies too, / Burst with the bubble of perceived things. / For this is the celebrity of dogs: seeing all, seeing nothing. Yep, when the music starts, the images take a back seat. / As a self-made, professional, full-time musician, it’s just one of those things, that when business is good, imagery goes on the backburner. So when i do get a quick chance to shoot one off, like my recent pic Dinner Date (whilst feeding the chickens), it takes on a new importance, and a new kind of urgency. I hope some of my Bubbly collegues are able take the time to look, comment, and…hell, just FINDING it would be nice! And to those of you who find it as surprising as i did when i looked down and found them there, well, if it feels good…

Taken on a walk around the neighbourhood. Untouched macro. It always brings a smile to my face to be able to look at details that one would miss with the naked eye. It’s a great passion to be able to share. This is a hand held macro.

Getting closer to the kind of photography I am aiming for. Leaving the house this morning for an appointment, I saw these two apparently contented creatures, who were so absorbed they either did not notice or did not care that I was snapping shot after shot of their activities. Coming home a few hours later, I find them still going at it, having only slightly shifted their position. This was the best of about thirty snaps. I took a little video clip as well. The female may start feeding by biting off the male’s head (as with any prey), and if mating had begun, the male’s movements may become even more vigorous in its delivery of sperm. Early researchers thought that because copulatory movement is controlled by ganglion in the abdomen, not the head, removal of the male’s head was a reproductive strategy by females to enhance fertilisation while obtaining sustenance. Later, this behaviour appeared to be an artifact of intrusive laboratory observation. Whether the behaviour in the field is natural, or also the result of distractions caused by the human observer, remains controversial. Mantises are highly visual creatures, and notice any disturbance occurring in the laboratory or field such as bright lights or moving scientists. Research by Liske and Davis (1987) and others found (e.g. using video recorders in vacant rooms) that Chinese mantises that had been fed ad libitum (so were not starving) actually displayed elaborate courtship behavior when left undisturbed. The male engages the female in courtship dance, to change her interest from feeding to mating. Courtship display has also been observed in other species, but it does not hold for all mantises. The reason for sexual cannibalism has been debated, with some considering submissive males to be achieving a selective advantage in their ability to produce offspring. This theory is supported by a quantifiable increase in the duration of copulation among males who are cannibalized, in some cases doubling both the duration and the chance of fertilization. This is further supported in a study where males were seen to approach hungry females with more caution, and were shown to remain mounted on hungry females for a longer time, indicating that males actively avoiding cannibalism may mate with multiple females. The act of dismounting is one of the most dangerous times for males during copulation, for it is at this time that females most frequently cannibalize their mates. This increase in mounting duration was thought to indicate that males would be more prone to wait for an opportune time to dismount from a hungry female rather than from a satiated female that would be less likely to cannibalize her mate. Some consider this to be an indication that male submissiveness does not inherently increase male reproductive success, rather that more fit males are likely to approach a female with caution and escape. The mating season in temperate climates typically begins in autumn. To mate following courtship, the male usually leaps onto the female’s back, and clasps her thorax and wing bases with his forelegs. He then arches his abdomen to deposit and store sperm in a special chamber near the tip of the female’s abdomen. The female then lays between 10 and 400 eggs, depending on the species. Eggs are typically deposited in a frothy mass that is produced by glands in the abdomen. This froth then hardens, creating a protective capsule with a further protective coat, and the egg mass is called an ootheca. Depending on the species these can be attached to a flat surface, wrapped around a plant or even deposited in the ground. Despite the versatility and durability of the eggs, they are often preyed on, especially by several species of parasitic wasps. In a few species, the mother guards the eggs. In tropical species, the natural lifespan of a mantis in the wild is about 10-12 months, but some species kept in captivity have been sustained for 14 months. In colder areas, females will die during the winter (as well as any surviving males).
