This photo was taken at the funeral of the first police officer killed while on duty in my city, Windsor, Ontario, in over 125 years. It was also the largest funeral in at least fifty years, if not longer. The officer’s children’s classes came, and as high school students we were paired up with them to watch them for the day. This was my student… I think he was ten at the time…

Riot Cops sometimes need a break from oppressing your civil liberties doncha know?

One does all the talking, the other could tear you limb from limb without a drop of blood hitting his suit.

The once ubiquitous Irish-American New York police officer stands at attention like a lone citadel. The classic Irish cop, right on down to his old-school helmet, drooping mustache, and paunch. / Original work was done in watercolors and gouache on Arches cold-press, late 2006.

I was proceeding in a North Easterly direction through the town of Ebbw Vale when I spotted this, loitering with intent, on the police station wall.

Irish Gardaí Síochana take a bus instead of a Black Maria van. I got on this bus on George’s street, or some part of that street that has several names, in Dublin and after sitting down turned around to see oodles of Gardai. / I had my camera. / I was cheeky. / I turned and asked whilst showing the camera if I could take a picture. Reluctantly they agreed some with humour others not so much. They had their hats off so I shot one without and realising that this would never occur again I asked if they would put their hats on. “Ah go on off with ya,” said one. “Hats on”, barked the sergeant/captain from the back of the bus. Hats went on, “Smile please”, I said. Smiles were fixed. “Could you all look straight ahead please?”, I asked. Eyes were pointed forward. “Could you move just a bit to your right?, Yeah you. Thanks” “Take the photo!” I heard. I did. Here it is. / 1995 On a public bus George’s Street – Dublin

Oil on Canvas Board / Okay, lots of my love life coming up here. Frankly, I confess to enjoying this. / A painting of fantastic Swede NY city detective and me. Seems we were always tearing each other’s clothes off. I did this painting/sketch with about the same speed. / I’ll never forget his fabulous shoulders, but I’ll be damned if I can remember his name. / Cops, detectives, agents…all great lovers and lousy dates. They never show up on time, you can never get them on the phone, you have to feed them – they’ve never eaten a meal always hungry and don’t have the time for restaurants; they have a thousand women in every port, rarely stay for breakfast, sometimes show up with flowers, and they lie a lot. But there is some magic in watching a man get undressed, shirt, pants…and guns…that is just way cool. There’s an odd aloofness in these men that comes from doing dangerous work that can hurt, if it weren’t all so fascinating. A breed apart.

A shirt design I’ve been promising two of my closest friends for some years now. It has its origins in a roadtrip, a traffic cop and a catchphrase we will take to our graves.

Love ART… Hate COPS…

My sister is becoming a cop. Her boyfriend is a cop, with the police department that absolutely hates me. Not that I have done anything wrong. I have been arrested twice. for bullshit!!!! I have had the charges dropped both times. I was freakin’ innocent! The police hate me, because I made them look stupid, like they really are. Now, I temporarily have one in my house and one to be, my own friggin sister. I am so pissed off.

This is another photograph from the funeral of the first officer killed on duty ever in my city. I was surprised when I looked through all of my images at the end of that day and found this one, an officer seemingly ‘reaching out’ to another one who appears to be taken by his emotions as they line up to begin the procession to the graveyard. I’ve entered this in the Compassion competiton, as I believe it not only shows the truest and purest form of compassion, but also demonstrates how anyone and everyone, even the most hardened and oldest of the police force can be overcome by their emotions, and when that is recognised, how they are also not afraid to offer each other the comfort they may need at the moment. We are all human, we all have feelings, and we all need to be given that extra hand around the shoulder, pat on the back, or words of healing from time to time. This is life. / This is real. / Life is real.

SWFC v LCFC / - away end / From what I recall the police had removed a flag from the back of the stand and it’s owner was seeking an explanation. Beleive all was resolved amicably.
