  • No better place for a crook to hide out in, / still / it was either going to be me or him, / and I have the gun. Thankyou to Wen for modelling and to Chris for lighting work. Back Alley Atelier

  • The once ubiquitous Irish-American New York police officer stands at attention like a lone citadel. The classic Irish cop, right on down to his old-school helmet, drooping mustache, and paunch. / Original work was done in watercolors and gouache on Arches cold-press, late 2006.

  • Untouched photograph.

  • This photo was taken at the funeral of the first police officer killed while on duty in my city, Windsor, Ontario, in over 125 years. It was also the largest funeral in at least fifty years, if not longer. The officer’s children’s classes came, and as high school students we were paired up with them to watch them for the day. This was my student… I think he was ten at the time…

  • Riot Cops sometimes need a break from oppressing your civil liberties doncha know?

  • Irish Gardaí Síochana take a bus instead of a Black Maria van. I got on this bus on George’s street, or some part of that street that has several names, in Dublin and after sitting down turned around to see oodles of Gardai. / I had my camera. / I was cheeky. / I turned and asked whilst showing the camera if I could take a picture. Reluctantly they agreed some with humour others not so much. They had their hats off so I shot one without and realising that this would never occur again I asked if they would put their hats on. “Ah go on off with ya,” said one. “Hats on”, barked the sergeant/captain from the back of the bus. Hats went on, “Smile please”, I said. Smiles were fixed. “Could you all look straight ahead please?”, I asked. Eyes were pointed forward. “Could you move just a bit to your right?, Yeah you. Thanks” “Take the photo!” I heard. I did. Here it is. / 1995 On a public bus George’s Street – Dublin

  • This traffic cop stood out a mile in her orange rain gear in New York City! As you can see, I shot this just as a Greyhound bus was going past, which helped to create a nice contrast. Taken with a Canon EOS 450D. Title provided by my partner, Paul Wilkin Featured in Victorian Viewfinders, and All About New York State: Up, Down, and all around, July 2009. Featured on the RB home page, August 2009.

  • I just had to show you this one. After a hot day of boating on Falcon Lake, Manitoba, I managed to get a few shots of a Loon showing off for the camera. It’s hard to shoot hand held with a 500mm lens! I thought you would enjoy these antics, which reminded me of a traffic cop. I do believe this to be a female Loon who has a shorter beak than the male. / Photographed at Falcon Lake, Whiteshell Provincial Park, Manitoba, Canada. / Canon Rebel XTi; Sigma 150-500mm lens / 1/1259 sec.; F/6.3; 500mm; ISO400

  • You are looking at the result of a fun collaborative effort. A lovely young family friend was leaving our home very late Sunday night. She noticed the beautiful lighting effect of the traffic lights in the fog down the street. She came back to borrow a camera. I then grabbed my camera and tripod and we went out to see if we could capture the moment. The police thought we looked a bit “out of place” and stopped to talk to us… (I should have said “talk to her”, she’s very attractive!) Satisfied that we weren’t causing any trouble, the officer asked if we would prefer the light to change to red. “Sure!”, we said. The two patrolmen drove around the block, tripped the automatic traffic light sensor and then turned off their headlamps so they wouldn’t ruin the shot. As the officer pulled away, he said ”...to protect and serve!” Special THANKS to Karley! This is her vision. This photo was taken with a Canon EOS 10D with a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Prime lens. The shutter speed was 1/6th sec at f/4, no flash. The camera’s ISO was set to 1,600. A Manfrotto tripod was used. The photo is straight from the camera, as-is. Your comments are always welcome! • The original is a 36” x 48” acrylic painting, As in many of my paintings I use Metallic and interference paints that alter of show up differently depending on the viewers angle of view and the lighting. Since photography can’t interpret this kind of dynamic the camera version of this work wasn’t to my satisfaction… so I started to use the image to experiment with photo-shop elements. I watched as the colors jumped all the way through the roof… the people upstairs were not happy, particularly given the late hour. / So here is a version of this work that I was on when the neighbor’s call to the color cops stopped my playing around.
