The defensive Tower house of Smailholm, just over the Scottish border, near Kelso. The tower was built in the mid 1400’s at a time when lawlessness and violent bands of reivers, ravaged the lands both sides of the English-Scottish border. And a solitary white swan, resides below the Tower Even today, the landscape is lonely, and you can easily imagine the starkness of those dark days.
For me summer holiday memories are all about bare feet, the sea, the smell of aerogard and barbeques, and long days and warm nights often spent in a caravan park by the ocean. This piece is about all of that, but I also wanted to infuse it with a bit of darkness and mystery …Holiday villages are so full of life and colourful characters by day, but at night when all have gone to bed and secured their temporary little homes, they can be quite strange and creepy…

The rain forest area of the Otway Ranges has some of the most spectacular waterfalls and lush fern covered walks. / They do require some effort to access, particularly the walk back up, but they are magnificent locations to visit.

A curbside growth of moss with a touch of industrial paint in Hiroshima, Japan.
There’s a delightful spot about 5 km outside of Hope BC, called the Othello Tunnels, where a breathtaking rush of cool clear water runs through an impossible passage which was blasted through rock to make way for the Kettle Valley Railway which no longer runs. / The Othello Tunnels are also known as Quintette Tunnels. There are actually five of these tunnels. However the Tunnel #3 almost appears to be one long tunnel, but there is a small opening about half way along. These tunnels were designed by Andrew McCulloch to save going around the Coquihalla Canyon. The railbed crosses the Coquihalla River several times and the views are well worth the trip. The trestles have all been converted to walkways now, and it is a provincial park. / Taken with Nikon D70…auto setting…minor saturation tweak.
A bit of a rework of an image that was originally created as part of a quadtych series – “Vanishing Point (#’s1-4)” – entered into the Nikon Summer Salon back in 2004 – (now called the Kodak Salon). Was beside myself – read; totally friggin stoked! when the series was awarded – “Best Digital Photomedia Work” The Kodak Salon is now Australia’s largest open entry photomedia exhibition held at The Centre for Contemporary Photography, Fitzroy, Melbourne.

Well, kind of. This is as near to an apocalyptic scene as Cleethorpes is ever likely to get. Until the apocalypse, that is. But that’s not coming for at least 2 years, so this will do in the meantime.
