Tucked amongst the trees by the ocean, “The Shack” sums up the essence of the Cocos Islands for me. A hut for surfers, a deck chair in the shade, warm breeze, driftwood, surf and sand between my toes. Well maybe a few mozzies too! Here exists a culture hard to find elsewhere; one of respect, where you can leave your surfboard and towel and come back to it a day later, a month later. Elephant Rocks, William Bay National Park, Western Australia (near Denmark) This national park is one of my favourite places on Earth. Elephants Rocks, Denmark, Western Australia. For Beth, my twin-sis. Another image from one of my favourite places. The day of our visit, it amazed me how many people stood on the top of these rocks and then turned back to the carpark, missing the view of the rocks from this point and all the wonderful coastline around the corner. I love rainy, overcast, windy days. Someone has to, I suppose. The pink/purple of the fireweed has yet to reach its full splendor. As Alaskan legend has it, when fireweed blooms all the way to the top of its spire – the six-week countdown to winter begins. Some of us can hardly wait. It felt great to get out in the elements! Sandhill cranes prepare to fly to warmer climes. Clouds enshroud the Kenai mountains behind them as they fly over Cook Inlet. I had this printed quite large and feel delighted with the clarity of the cranes! Dedicated to Australia’s Barbara Burkhardt, with whom I had tea and a moment of joy. Wonderful subtle sense of humor (humour).. I feel fortunate to have met this adventuous, talented woman and her handsome husband as they toured Alaska. I assume all Australians are as fun. Tom Uglys and the Captain Cook bridges by David Petranker Strong westerly winds across NSW have generated one of the most spectacular dust storms in the history of Sydney according to the Weather Channel. An orange haze has covered the city, reducing visibility, causing transport problems and creating health concerns for those with respiratory problems. “This is the biggest dust storm I have ever seen in Sydney,” says Dick Whitaker, senior meteorologist at The Weather Channel with more than 40 years of meteorological experience. “The last dust storm to hit Sydney was in October 2002 but it was nowhere as big as the one we are seeing today.” “The storm is as a consequence of an extended period of strong winds and very dry conditions over western NSW. We are looking at it gradually improving later this morning to early afternoon but it should remain hazy all day.” Leader readers have been quick to grab the abundance of photo opportunities this morning. Sydney woke to the red haze as dust blown in from western NSW caused havoc. All citybound lanes on the M5 East tunnel were closed earlier this morning while ferries were cancelled and some trains were delayed. Even a horse racing meeting at Canterbury Park racecourse had to be cancelled today. Passengers at Sydney Airport were told to expect significant delays and motorists should take extra care throughout the day because of harsh weather conditions. Sutherland SES spokesman John Gonzalez said volunteers had taken away fallen trees at Kareela and Menai. Matt Kirby at Kogarah SES said his team removed trees at Hurstville, Blakehurst and Rockdale. Primary schools in St George and Sutherland Shire are also taking precautions, keeping children in classrooms until the dust settles. Plane captured at Point Cook RAAF Air Museum there is only one on display the Aermacchi MB 326H it is an Italian produced trainer which the RAAf ordered in 1965 a total of 97 in all, the last flight for the 001 was in july 1999.
