  • Richmond Bridge is a lasting symbol of Tasmania’s convict heritage. The sandstone arches of Australia’s oldest known large stone arch bridge have spanned Tasmania’s Coal River since its completion in 1825. Built by convict labour, the Richmond Bridge reminds us of the forced migration that contributed to the development of Australian society. Richmond Bridge was included in the National Heritage List on 25 November 2005.

  • An orthodox Jew is praying at the western wall in Jerusalem. The wall also known as the wailing wall or the “Kotel” is the most sacred and holy place for jews. This is the last remaining wall from the old temple that was destroyed over 2000 years ago. This person is using the old testament bible. The black outfit is typical to the orthodox jews. • BETTER VIEWED LARGER Campbell’s Cove was formerly docks in the early days of the Colony of Sydney, this is where everything that had to be imported and exported passed throuh. These grand old buildings in Sydneys “Rocks ” district thankfully survive along with other buildings once threatened by demolision the area of the Rocks was saved by residents and unions from being demolished. Now the home of restaurants, hotels pubs and history, a walk through the rocks is like walking back in time The shot is the result of five bracketted shots then processed with photomatix, its a little bit heavier in hdr than my normal but i liked the effect. This area is now home to waterfront restaurants

  • I lay this foundation and cornerstone of the church to be built in this place, to be named the church of the Holy Trinity….: The speaker was the first Bishop of Australia William Grant Broughton, on a blustery Tuesday morning, 23rd June 1840. And so the spot was declared for what was to more popularly known as the Garrison Church which still stands at the southern end of Lower Fort Street, cornering Argyle place in one of the most historically colourful areas of Sydney known as The Rocks The builder was Edward Flood and accepted price for materials is interesting to scan, Bricks were 2/15 a thousand. A labourer worked 10 hours for 5/- a week while the bricklayer for the same period received 8/6. Henry Ginn, the architect of the basic structure, estimated that the church would house 250 adults and 50 children and in his original design his calculations were not far wrong. /

  • Convict Lake is located along Highway 395 in the Eastern High Sierra just southeast of Mammoth Lakes, and due west of Crowley Lake nestled right up against Mount Morrison. The Lake has a similar appearance to Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada in that the water has a greenish tint surrounded by a mountain range. One of the many things to do around the lake is hike up into the John Muir Wilderness, fish on the lake and paddleboating. The lake was named after an incident in 1871, where a group of convicts escaped from prison in Carson City. A posse, led by Sheriff Robert Morrison, encountered the convicts near the head of what is now Convict Creek. Morrison was killed in the encounter, and Mount Morrison was named after him. • I return to this exact spot a lot. I have to say it is one of my favorite places to take photographs. This canyon is one of nature’s great cathedrals. It’s hard to explain the feeling that comes over you when you are standing there staring out across the water…Especially during this time of year, when there is nobody else out there. You can have the whole place to yourself, or share it with someone special.

  • 2009 / 25×100 cm / etching, aquatint & linocut on Stonehenge, BFK Rives & Somerset papers with chine colle / variant edition of 3 This work is inspired by convict artist, William Gould’s Sketchbook of Fishes in Macquarie Harbour (c. 1832). Gould was transported to Van Dieman’s Land in 1827 for stealing. His original works were done in watercolours whilst serving a sentence at Macquarie Harbour on Tasmania’s rugged west coast. I decided to pay homage to Gould whilst reading Richard Flanagan’s fictional account of Gould’s life in his novel Gould’s Book of Fish, during my recent residency at the Frans Masereel Centre in Belgium. I feel there is a sense of conclusion in Gould being transported to the “New World” and creating his works, while I was “transported” back to the “Old World” where I made reproductions of his works. The observant viewer may notice hints of architectural reflections in the water segments of my prints, which are typical of the type of warehouses that line the canals of Holland and Belgium. These convey a sense of feeling like a “fish out of water”, something I experienced whilst undertaking my residency and which I imagine Gould must have felt in his strange new world.

  • I think every Australian knows of Port Arthur, for dark events that happened here, both in the recent past, and early days of Australia. A correctional facility for the re-offending criminals from Britain and Ireland, this was more than just a jail. It was about changing these men to rejoin society. It was used from 1833 until the 1877 when it was closed down. This was the main church, and it was one of Australia’s first non-denominational churches. Built using convict labour, in the gothic style. The bird in the shot is a crow. I did try to get one of the many rosellas in the area in the shot, but no luck there. Canon 50D, 10mm. • BEST VIEWED LARGER If ever a place could be haunted this would be the place, now a historic site this site was a place of suffering and isolation ‘ Port Arthur was a prison, or convict settlement, from the…from 1830 through to 1877. It started off as a small logging camp, but in 1833 was expanded to become a full penitentiary. The main penitentiary is the building in the foreground, which was built later on. At its height, Port Arthur had about 1,600 convicts here, so it was a very large place. The convicts themselves – all men – actually described Port Arthur as being hell on earth. “They broke men’s spirits,” that’s their quote. I would say, simply, they drove a lot of men mad. Very unpleasant place. The site was self sufficient and could provide most items the prison needed. Easily the most imposing ruin on the site, the Penitentiary began its life in 1843 as a flour mill and granary. In 1857 it was converted into a penitentiary capable of housing over 480 convicts in both dormitory-style accommodation and separate apartments. Also containing a messroom, library and Catholic chapel, the penitentiary was flanked by the Watchmens’ Quarters, as well as a range of workshops and an ablutions complex. Gutted in the 1897 fires, the building lay derelict until a concerted conservation program began in the 1960s.
