Convenience

  • I took this on a road trip through Colorado. The little bloke the middle is my nephew Jack. I love this shot and yet everything in it is so inconsequential. Perhaps that’s its secret for me. It demonstrates the typical props of American life. The consumer goods, the ATM, the ‘wild west test your strength game’ Jack is playing with, the hint of USA embroidery on the shirt worn by the man on the left and the wonderful stance and gaze of the harley rider over Jack’s left shoulder. So random yet so complete.

  • Harley riders traverse mid west USA on their fire breathing, mechanical chariots. / Flaunting stereotype they are more often white collar wanderers than barnstorming bikies. Freedom and the pursuit of it is an American obsession. Considered a right it attracts pilgrims from east to west, north to south. Juxtaposed against breathtaking scenery they demonstrate modernity on an ancient stage. As they pursue the most contemporary of quests for that ageless holy grail – freedom.

  • From my Ghost Town series. This image won 3rd place in a contest at another photo site :o) The lighting in this shot really rings my bell. It is 100% natural daylight coming thru the window of the structure. This one almost composed itself ;-) These make handsome cards.

  • This little sweetheart was using a drain in the path as his very own toilet!! Not sure what the lady in the taverna was thinking!

  • How about some tea to go with lunch?! When I first moved to Pennsylvania in 2000, I had already heard about Turkey Hill tea through some friends. It turns out that ‘Turkey Hill’ also has its own incredible ice cream and other food products that are all sold at their numerous convenience stores/gas stations in this area. Sometimes I think that people here worship the Turkey Hill god…it’s a bit scary!

  • BETTER VIEWED LARGER This shot is of the old baths area Mr Wynne built the baths for his wife, the building is fitted with wonderful stained glass, and is now a museum. / I The curious thing in this shot was the flashy old style loo, which was china and decorated like a porcelain wedgewood dinner plate lol The Turkish Bath is an example of the Federation Free Classical style with an infusion of Italianate stylising. The bricks were made by Wynne. The building is in good condition and retains a substantial proportion of original fabric and integrity. Recent research indicates the Turkish Bath house was built (well) before 1890 for use by Richard Wynne’s wife Mary Anne, who had fallen into ill health and whose doctors had prescribed a course of Turkish baths. Mrs Wynne died in July 1889 of abdominal cancer (Previously it was assumed to have been built c1892). Surviving Turkish Bath Houses are extremely rare in Australia – Dunmore station in Western Victoria has one made of basalt, c1866 (Lewis, undated).

  • A shop owner stays warm inside his little hut of usefulness whilst another man stands in the rain. / This was an freezing cold day in Sydney, and the constant shower made it so much more miserable. I was walking around looking for something to photograph when I saw this man in the hut, he looked very cosy so I tried to get the shot to show the contrast between the outside and in. Sydney, NSW, Australia. 3 Exp HDR (+2, 2 -2) / Canon 350D / 18-55mm EF-S / ISO 100 / Tripod Mounted / Photomatix Pro, Photoshop CS4, Lightroom 2

  • Cameron Highlands, Malaysia “but it is convenient…” says the fallible homo homo sapiens -Canon EOS Rebel XT, 85-300mm

  • This appealed to my warped sense of humour. Taken with Canon 350D before going to the Public Convenience at the end of the path it was pointing to.
