With >20cm falling on the Victorian Alps during the last 24hrs, it seems appropriate to contrast the seasons that are being experienced across the globe today. From the icy chill of winter, to the warming rays of summer – each season provides those with keen eyes, spectacular scenery to capture and beauty to inspire creativity. • Images of photographs are being treated as second rate here at Redbubble!

Many of you know that the great majority my work here is in the form of photographs of landscapes. You may not know that this kind of image is not presented to best effect here at Redbubble. They have been sharpened too much and the contrast is increased too, they also do not provide a very large preview of the image. This has hurt the essence of my work and means the hours I spend on it are for nothing. You can’t see what I see at home. I went to Redbubble and complained about this today and the short answer is this, they will do what helps the majority of images. Frankly I don’t think they are helping anybodies images at all. Perhaps this is just a T-shirt site and card boutique, but I don’t think they are helping those images either. Does anybody else feel this way? They just blew me off, after I spent over 400 dollars buying Christmas gifts here today. The quality of the prints is really good, the shirts are great, the cards are cropped too much but a good deal just the same. My beef is I think they are being cheap and won’t admit it when it comes to the presentation of our work. I think it could be addressed but won’t be. $$$ is why. What should I do? Leave? Start a mutiny? Suffer in silence as my work is obscured for no good reason? Let me hear what you think.

Oh, I am so close to giving in and buying a colour calibration device for my monitor. All I did yesterday was update my graphics driver. Just a simple procedure … surf on over to NVidia, grab the latest driver, d/l and install it. Hey presto, all is fine, reboot works (always a nice bonus with new drivers!) (#) but OH NO!, my background ain’t as black as is used to be. A few seconds later, I dare to look back at the screen, hoping the settings just had to be reloaded from the old driver but alas, no change. You see, I use a combination of the RGB/brightness/contrast controls on my monitor, AND on my graphics card driver via the control panel, to get reasonably acceptable gamma, colour and contrast. The new driver had complete failed to load my old settings. Now I was upset! There followed about six attempts to recalibrate my screen using various combinations of RGB gamma and test pattern images and the Adobe gamma utility and the wizard in the NVidia panel. I’ve only just got it sorted now (I think) and I’m left hoping/trusting that things are fine again. What worked best was simply that I know what my images look like from colour-controlled print labs, so after a rough calibration with the various wizards, I simply tweaked things until a reasonable selection of my images looked “right”. I think things are still fractionally blue, but it’ll do for now. It’s a bit slap-dash really, so I think it’s time to get me a colour calibration system. Who of my watchers has got a recommendation? thanks – David. (#) actually NVidia usually provides pretty reliable drivers, so the successful reboot was expected!

I was again so excited to find my photo, Blue Tulip, on the home page recently. It is an honor to have something I have created be shared with so many. I love the simplicity of that shot. It started out as a pink tulip against a makeshift background (a navy blue towel). The original photo is very pretty, and when I tinkered with it a bit in my new photo editing program, I was pleasantly surprised with the result. I just love contrast in a photo, and I think that one had contrast and a quiet mood about it. So if you noticed my blue tulip on the home page or here on my page, here is just a quiet little thank you for taking the time to notice… / Dana

India: Beautiful, rich, textures, culture, spirituality, majestic, contrast, contradictions, opposites, pollution, population, heat, religion These are just some of the words that come to mind when I think about India. It is too hard to actually describe and so often an experience cannot be put into words. I had an amazing time and so much of what I saw I could not capture on film as it would be culturally insensitive. I tried to record my experience on film as well as being appropriate. I have started uploading some photos for people to look at. Enjoy!

In stark contrast to photos that look straight down at the ground, I’ve added photos that look to the heavens above! These cloudscapes (like the ‘feet’) can be enjoyed individually or they can be seen juxtaposed (which provides continuity to the photos). Enjoy!

The work I’ll be putting up on Red Bubble will most likely be realistic and surreal montages of my photography Photoshopped into a new reality. I love colour and I am drawn to stark contrasts and images that stand out. Having said that I also like the subtle and the hues that fade gently from one area to another as in the gentlest of watercolours. As the collection grows I’m sure all of my moods will be represented.
