My pal Suzanne has suggested that I add more prose to my profile. So here’s the long version of a feature which appeared in the late 1990’s in both the Sunday Telegraph and the late (reasonably lamented) European. I’m sure the political vicissitudes I mention here have since sorted themselves out peachily – don’t they always – but the role in our British media for this kind of reportage diminishes by the day.

  • Were These Mere Co-incidents...
    by N Kumar Bellani

I have a strange feeling that some of my paintings have an element of foreboding…intuition…premonition…some strange connection with some …

...the same group of rowdy kids who’d hurled raw eggs on me and my paintings came-up and one of them, sounding more jeering than informing me with any sympathy, said to me that “there’s been a great earthquake and a giant tidal wave in India today…I seemed to have lost my ground and I panicked…worried more about my kids and my family back in India… The rest is history… Tsunami had struck…the TV said….. ...In October 2004 while I was staying at Dr. R.S. Bola’s house on 46, Amberley Road, Slough, SL2 2LR, England, I had no way of knowing that in the wildest of my imagination that England could ever see floods, ever. I had no notion at all. THE FLOODS CAME TO ENGLAND IN THE SUMMER OF 2007, WHICH IS HISTORY AS WELL… ...SO HOW DID IT EVER OCCUR TO ME TO PAINT A TSUNAMI WHEN I’D NEVER EVEN HEARD THE WORD BEFORE?…OR PAINTING ’ A PLACE I KNOW’... I HAVE NO EXPLANATION, DO YOU OR ANYONE ?...

contemporary – information provided by wikipedia:

Contemporary art can be defined variously as art produced at this present point in time or art produced since World War II. The definition of the word contemporary would support the first view, but museums of contemporary art commonly define their collections as consisting of art produced since World War II.
