The Cheetah The fastest land animal in the world, the cheetah is a marvel of evolution. The cheetah’s slender, long-legged body is built for speed. Cheetahs are tan in color with black spots all over their bodies. They can also be distinguished from other big cats by their smaller size, spotted coats, small heads and ears and distinctive “tear stripes” that stretch from the corner of the eye to the side of the nose. Found mostly in open and partially open savannah, cheetahs rely on tall grasses for camouflage when hunting. They are diurnal (more active in the day) animals and hunt mostly during the late morning or early evening. Only half of the chases, which last from 20-60 seconds, are successful. Cheetahs knock their prey to the ground and kill with a suffocating bite to the neck. They must eat quickly before they lose the kills to other bigger or more aggressive carnivores. Cheetahs are also typically solitary animals. While males sometimes live with a small group of brothers from the same litter, females generally raise cubs by themselves for about a year. Height 2 ½ -3 feet at shoulders / Length 44-53 inches (tail length of 26-33 inches) / Weight 110-140 pounds Top Speed 70mph Lifespan 10-12 years Diet Gazelles, wildebeest calves, impalas and smaller hoofed animals Threats The cheetah’s future is uncertain due to a variety of threats. The biggest is habitat loss due to human encroachment. In addition, they often deal with declines in prey and conflicts with humans. There is also high cub mortality due to predation by carnivores like lions and hyenas that are in competition with the cheetah, as well as genetic inbreeding which leads to abnormalities.

I was invited by the BLM to photograph a gather of the wild horses at the Deep Creek Mountains in Tooele County Utah. In trying to prepare myself for what I was about to see I was surprised at how gentle and caring the BLM and the contractors handled the horses. They have a horse trained whose name is Judas who leads the wild horses through the chutes and into the holding pen. The BLM told me approx. 30 percent of the horses will be returned back to the wild after contraception and physicals. I don’t know the numbers exactly, the remaining horses will be adopted out and others will be sent to prisons where they will be gentled by prisoners and then used on the borders for border control. I still feel that the horses belong in the wild but have more of an understanding for why they have to be gathered. I will still sign every petition out there and still fight for the horses.

    by Ginny York

This is a big yellow toad I found out in my backyard. I was walking in the leaves this past Fall and something moved. Well I was a little worried that it might be a snake….so I stood real still and looked around. Then it hopped. So I caught it and brought it in for a little photo shoot. I had already set up a spot with pumpkins and gourds for the puppies…so in the set he went. Needless to say…he was not too happy. / FEATURED IN “EYE CONTACT” / /

This one is not in the charity series. I took it at Port Melbourne because I thought it served as a great analogy for adventure. It captured the last moment of contact with the known before leaping off into the unknown.

    by AbyssalSoul

“So every ending could also mean a new beginning. The creature dives in the space and eventually finds the key to a portal. It makes contact with the essence of the universe. Like a child greets its mother, the creature flies towards the essence, fusing with it and creating a new dimension where life will spread its wings. The fire of the souls that conform the main basis of existence soon might begin their journey across planets to deliver the precious spark of life. That is the final contact, which could also be the first one.” In other words (partially normal at least), this is the usual surreal space being meeting with the ‘universe’s intelligence’, its essence as I mentioned (I know, mad). Done with Photoshop, Chaoscope and a lot of editing and tests with different settings plus a dose of patience.
