  • I was invited by the BLM to photograph a gather of the wild horses at the Deep Creek Mountains in Tooele County Utah. In trying to prepare myself for what I was about to see I was surprised at how gentle and caring the BLM and the contractors handled the horses. They have a horse trained whose name is Judas who leads the wild horses through the chutes and into the holding pen. The BLM told me approx. 30 percent of the horses will be returned back to the wild after contraception and physicals. I don’t know the numbers exactly, the remaining horses will be adopted out and others will be sent to prisons where they will be gentled by prisoners and then used on the borders for border control. I still feel that the horses belong in the wild but have more of an understanding for why they have to be gathered. I will still sign every petition out there and still fight for the horses.

  • The Cheetah The fastest land animal in the world, the cheetah is a marvel of evolution. The cheetah’s slender, long-legged body is built for speed. Cheetahs are tan in color with black spots all over their bodies. They can also be distinguished from other big cats by their smaller size, spotted coats, small heads and ears and distinctive “tear stripes” that stretch from the corner of the eye to the side of the nose. Found mostly in open and partially open savannah, cheetahs rely on tall grasses for camouflage when hunting. They are diurnal (more active in the day) animals and hunt mostly during the late morning or early evening. Only half of the chases, which last from 20-60 seconds, are successful. Cheetahs knock their prey to the ground and kill with a suffocating bite to the neck. They must eat quickly before they lose the kills to other bigger or more aggressive carnivores. Cheetahs are also typically solitary animals. While males sometimes live with a small group of brothers from the same litter, females generally raise cubs by themselves for about a year. Height 2 ½ -3 feet at shoulders / Length 44-53 inches (tail length of 26-33 inches) / Weight 110-140 pounds Top Speed 70mph Lifespan 10-12 years Diet Gazelles, wildebeest calves, impalas and smaller hoofed animals Threats The cheetah’s future is uncertain due to a variety of threats. The biggest is habitat loss due to human encroachment. In addition, they often deal with declines in prey and conflicts with humans. There is also high cub mortality due to predation by carnivores like lions and hyenas that are in competition with the cheetah, as well as genetic inbreeding which leads to abnormalities. ””EYE CONTACT”” was featured in Eye Macros

  • This is a big yellow toad I found out in my backyard. I was walking in the leaves this past Fall and something moved. Well I was a little worried that it might be a snake….so I stood real still and looked around. Then it hopped. So I caught it and brought it in for a little photo shoot. I had already set up a spot with pumpkins and gourds for the puppies…so in the set he went. Needless to say…he was not too happy. / FEATURED IN “EYE CONTACT” / 2 TOP 10 FEATURES IN FABULOUS FROGGIES / PLACED IN THE TOP 10 IN THE FROGS AND TOADS CHALLENGE IN PETS ARE US / /

  • The Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo) is a medium to large bird of prey, whose range covers most of Europe and extends into Asia. It is typically between 51-57 cm in length with a 110 to 130 cm (48-60 inch) wingspan, making it a medium-sized raptor. There are around 40,000 breeding pairs in Britain. It is usually resident all year except in the coldest parts of its range, and in the case of one subspecies. It breeds in woodland, usually on the fringes, but favours hunting over open land. It eats mainly small mammals, and will come to carrion. A great opportunist, it adapts well to a varied diet of pheasant, rabbit, other small mammals, snakes and lizards and can often be seen walking over recently ploughed fields looking for worms and insects. They are fiercely territorial, and, though rare, fights do break out if one strays on another pair’s territory, but dominant displays of aggression will normally see off the interloper. Pairs mate for life. To attract a mate (or impress his existing mate) the male performs a ritual aerial display before the beginning of Spring. This spectacular display is known as ‘the roller coaster’. He will rise high up in the sky, to turn and plummet downward, in a spiral, twisting and turning as he comes down. To then rise immediately upward to repeat the exercise. This broad-winged raptor has a wide variety of plumages, and in Europe can be confused with the similar Rough-legged Buzzard (Buteo lagopus) and the only distantly related Honey Buzzard (Pernis apivorus), which mimics the Common Buzzard’s plumage for a degree of protection from Goshawks. The plumage can vary in Britain from almost pure white to black, but is usually shades of brown, with a pale ‘necklace’ of feathers. The call is a plaintive peea-ay, similar to a cat’s meow.
