The government operated the mine as a prison from the late 18th to the early 19th century. Drawn glass is the type of glazing used in the earliest windows in this country. It’s made by stretching (drawing) the glass directly from the furnace to the correct dimensions. This accounts for the wavery appearance you see in the original glass of colonial-era houses that have been preserved. Painted from an original photo shop in April 2004.
