This is the second painting I have made of what is undoubtedly my favourite place in the world (the first, “The Ruin of Dunscaith Castle” is also on this site). If I had to nominate my “happy place” it would be here. Like Knock Bay, Dunscaith Castle is also on the coast of The Isle of Skye. I first visited it with friends several years ago (hi, Scott and Jenni) but this painting resulted from a return trip late in 2006. On this second visit my wife and I spent most of the morning there, photographing the location and soaking up the atmosphere. I can’t quite describe why it is so special to me but, at a technical level, the rock and the ruin are the perfect motif for the work I am presently interested in producing- it’s an isolated, monolithic formation that has also been modified and inhabited throughout history. In terms of natural beauty it’s an amazing place but I also feel a very strong sense of walking in the footsteps, so to speak, of people long gone, when I’m there- hence the title. This second painting, unlike the first, is a view from the opposite side of the rock. It’s a little hard to see on the screen but you can make out a small section of the remaining castle masonry on the top left of the rock.

Not sure what the significance of the dots and the number but these type of patterns were all over the place in an abandoned telecommunications complex. Other images from this location can be seen here.

I give thanks to Michelangelo for his wonderful work which I added to this collage. The title of this collage sums it all up. Without the cross, there would be no connection. I give thanks for the life and sacrifice of Jesus!

Simple line drawing done with a felt tipped pen. I think the freehand feel to it and the messy line work suits the subject matter. / A couple of stripped down versions of this illustration, minus the boarder and minus the background, are also available as t-shirts now.

It’s not what you think. In a former incarnation, about five years ago, I trained as a dominatrix. To think this was all about sex would be a mistake; it held delicate lessons about intimacy and connection, about reaching out and allowing yourself to be reached for, and I’m still learning from them today. I’m always learning.

/ The labyrinth is an ancient symbol that relates to wholeness, it combines the imagery of the circle and the spiral into a meandering but purposeful path. It represents a journey to our own centre and back out again. We can have a direct experience with a labyrinth and they are often used during meditation and prayer. Walking through a labyrinth awakens our senses and also acts as a rebirthing centre and seen as the Great Goddess’ womb and we are cleansed by the experience. You may notice my picture is encased within a uterus shape to represent this. They reveal the presence of a cosmic order and universal consciousness, this labyrinth I have drawn here and then expanded on in a polar pattern is called a 7-Fold Cretan Labyrinth and the oldest known labyrinth found around the world in ancient sites and sacred areas known to have been drawn at least 4000BC. This same labyrinth can be found on coins from Knossos, Crete 10BC. Crete is home to the most famous labyrinth myth, that of the Greek hero Theseus and his slaying of the Minotaur after he enters King Minos’ Labyrinth and with the help of Ariadne’s ball of wool finds his way out again, sails back to Greece and becomes and Athenian hero. Most labyrinths, particularly ancient and religious ones, a good one is at Chartres in France, contain non-verbal, geometric and numerical symbols or prompts that create the sacred geometry. These are meant to represent a cosmic order as they interface the material world with the realms of higher consciousness…. Labyrinth is a word of Pelasgian, which is pre-Greek, origin and oddly enough comes about from labrys, a word for the Archaic “double axe”, with inthos “place” (as in “Corinth”). The complex palace of Knossos in Crete is usually implicated, though the actual dancing-ground, depicted in patterns at Knossos, has not been found. Something was being shown to visitors as a labyrinth at Knossos in the 1st century AD. Greek mythology did not recall, however, that in Crete there was a Lady who presided over the Labyrinth. A tablet inscribed in Linear B found at Knossos records a gift “to all the gods honey; to the mistress of the labyrinth honey.” All the gods together receive as much honey as the Mistress of the Labyrinth alone. This is how it so often feels when I am going about my daily life… outside the Bubble… trying to engage on a level that holds meaning and connection for me, but so often falls way short of my expectations.
