I’ve always loved Margaret Widdemer’s poem, “The Watcher.” I’ve coupled it with an image I took of a steeple of a very old church in Houston, Texas. I hope that those who have suffered the loss of a mother will find comfort in this photo. My mother is still alive and I am grateful for her; I created this image for those whose mothers are no longer with them and who suffer loneliness, especially during the holidays and on birthdays and anniversaries of death.
Oil on Canvas / Commission for the Chicago Police Department / Displayed in Chicago Police Headquarters / Officer mourning the loss of two partners in a shootout downtown. I had been working on a memorial, sculpting, for slain police officers in NYC, and the Chicago PD asked me to paint this. We got permission from the officer here, who had answered a call with his partner and a previous partner. They were ambushed, he was the only survivor. A friend took this photograph at their funerals. There’s a lot in here that’s not so clearly shown, the state flag and flower, the details of the church yard. It was a very rough time for this officer, and for Chicago. Email: hawk@hawksperch.com / Website: THE HAWKS PERCH, www.hawksperch.com

Psalm 30:5 is such a comforting verse, a reminder that grief has its season and then changes to gentler times. I would like to dedicate this to Bianca Thomas who lost her beloved husband. May you be comforted by the angels and strengthened as you grieve.

“Listen a hundred times; ponder a thousand times; speak once.” / - TURKISH PROVERB My son Kane had no idea I was photographing him at this time…He was just wondering sweetly along a path in a local parkland area when suddenly he stopped and leaned on the fence. I honestly could not believe what I was seeing through my viewfinder when he did it. Then when I saw the photograph it just blew me away. Kane is 3 years old in this photograph. This is my all time favourite photograph I’ve taken with my DSLR to date. Played with the colour version in photoshop and am very pleased with the outcome. Of those we lost… This work possibly has more significance than any other image I’ve ever created.. I completed and originally posted it on another website back on September 11th 2006. 5 years after the horrific 9/11 attacks in which 2,976 innocent victims lost their lives. Even in 2009, deaths are still being directly attributed to 9/11. All profits from sales of this card will be donated to Families of September 11 One by Creed Affirmative may be justified / Take from one give to another / The goal is to be unified / Take my hand be my brother / The payment silenced the masses / Sanctified by oppression / Unity took a backseat / Sliding further into regression Society blind by color / Why hold down one to raise another / Discrimination now on both sides / Seeds of hate blossom further / The world is heading for mutiny / When all we want is unity / We may rise and fall, but in the end / We meet our fate together One, oh one, / The only way is one / I feel angry I feel helpless / Want to change the world / I feel violent I feel alone / Don’t try and change my mind Completely worked and produced in Bryce 5 © 2009 Ross Spencer.
