Suggestion of the day to RB Admin. If any other exhibitors disagree or agree with my idea, please comment here! I’d prefer the default when opening the ‘purchase cart’ to be on the cards (the least expensive item) rather than framed options. This might seem mad, but there are two reasons: 1. We prefer more sales, rather than none at all. Some people may baulk at the prices of these framed images – even though they are fair and reasonable!! So let them see the cards first. (Some people may prefer to purchase 50x$5 cards than purchase a $250 framed image.) / / 2. I had someone say, “Hang on, this says ‘From $3’ – but I don’t see anything under a $100.” They simply didn’t see the choices of frames, canvas, etc. They arrived at the first screen and figured that was all there was.

  • Making choices in self portraiture

This is my homework for the course I am currently doing at Brunswick Street Gallery. We have to take a self portrait which does not show our face but which does show something of ourselves. This may not be the one I submit, but it has been an interesting exercize and I thought I would share. I often post work here without much of an explanation into the choices I make. I thought it might be nice to make it available so you can see that I do actually put a bit of thought into my work, even if it is not obvious at first glance. The Easels: / Faded and old. They represent myself as an artist. How of late I am taking fewer and fewer photos and am out of practice. They are scattered at random, which is a lot like my very hectic and chaotic life. Yet they all match, which shows my underlying need to have organisation, even if it is organised chaos. You may notice the empty frame. For me this represents not only my occupation, but it’s emptiness means it acts as a window. A way to see into me. It is a comment on the whole image as well as an element within it. The Doll: / This is a childhood doll and has my old name written on it (from before I became Jo O’Brien). So it connects to my past and reminds me of a time passed. She is naked, which reflects how I feel as an artist, always confessing through my art. She is torn at both arms from being pulled in a tug-of-war game. Much like how I feel when I have more things requiring my time than I have time for. On a more human level. She represents my desire to one day have children, my “femaleness”, my nurturing side. The Costume: / It was scavenged from an op shop. Something I absolutely adore doing. And it fits like a second skin, showing my comfort in front of the camera. It’s close colour match to my skin implies nudity which highlights a more general level of comfort with my body, and ability to play a role within my own skin. It’s second hand nature reminds me that a ‘creative artist life’ was never my first choice. In fact, I studied Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Maths Methods in VCE and always had an aptitude for the sciences. Art was an accident. The Location: / At home in the back yard. Here I feel most relaxed and comfortable. It has been the location of numerous photo shoots and self portraits, so much so that I would feel like I was abondoning this space to take self portraits elsewhere. It also represents for me, my ability to live off my creativity, as my best selling shot was taken here. More generally I enjoy the idea of fences, of what they hold in and out. And of how to break them down. This is a theme I like to play with in a lot of my work- the emotional and psychological barriers we put up around ourselves, often needlessly. Setting up the shot: / I wanted to appear within the forest of easels and yet comfortable which dictated my pose, leaning gently against the fence. This shows my acceptance of the situation and environment and willingness to participate within it. However I am still holding my doll and not interacting with any other part of the environment. This suggests I still cling to something from my childhood, and have insecurites about the art world and my credibility as an artist. Your thoughts?

Well here i am, making my first entry into something i never thought i’d do. I guess i thought nobody would ever read this. / Maybe they won’t. / Maybe this is just for me. / In any case I’m sitting here at nine minutes past midnight on the eighth of January, foul year of our lord 2008. Wondering if, anything new will happen this time around. Not in any ordinary sense, like for example if the bin men will start to come on a Thursday rather than a Wednesday. I’m talking about something far more prestigious, will something come around the bend and take me some place special. / Probably not. / One can always hope. / I’ll probably have to go and find it. Which is a great shame since my car is 300 miles away and i fear that if i were to stray more than a few hundred meters away from my cage here at 41, I’ll most probably be raped and pillaged by the hordes of hoi polloi and plebs. I know that makes me sound like a snob, but just you come to this edge of the world and you can find out for yourself that there are lower forms of life than a Prokaryote. / This is starting to sound like some sort of depressed introduction to a suicide note. Far from it. I’m just typing whatever pops into my head at this god forsaken hour being in a slight state of delirium, mostly from lack of sleep. I would sleep, but i can’t. At first i thought i had insomnia but promptly discarded this idea when i realized that i sleep for around 14-16 hours at a time. It’s just i can’t sleep till around 3am . I’ve been told “it’s because of all that coke you drink”. Well, just to set the record straight, it’s fucking Dr pepper. / I realize theres not much talk of photography so far, so maybe I’ll have a dabble… / I haven’t taken a ‘proper’ photograph for months. Mainly due to the fact that by the time i get up, it’s dark again. / Terrible excuse. / Actually it is a little depressing that i haven’t produced anything new for this long. Even the last two additions to the gallery were old photographs reworked. This isn’t to say the ideas aren’t there, right now many scribblings and doodles lay dormant in the back pocket of these jeans. These will come to life very soon, i promise. / My fingers are tired now. And cold. Whats wrong with the damn heating? Yours frostily. A.J.W. P.S. Christmas was pretty great. As was New year. P.P.S. This has ended like a letter hasn’t it?

Well I got my first 2 tees from Redbubble today. / The print is fairly good quality, I have yet to try out a colour print though. / Only major complaint is that they sent me 2 of the same tshirts, even though the label says otherwise. So now I have 2 identical tshirts. / Besides that though I am fairly happy with them overall and I will continue to use them. / For those of you that have ordered my tshirts and received them, please feel free to let me know what you think of the quality.

As I am practically brand new to design and photography, I want to play a game and get the RedBubble community involved. It is fairly simple and the reason behind it is to challenge my creativity and develop my skills. I would like people to post a comment with a word, concept, or theme… from A to Z (the alphabet) and I will challenge myself to create a piece of wall art, and t-shirt design for each posted comment. All work will be tagged a2z along with the corresponding topic and letter of the alphabet for an easy search function. Feel free to join in the fun… so what will A be?

  • The Red Bubble Club concept has been set up as an alternative to Red Bubble Groups. This is not to knock Groups, but to put forth an alternative in addition to Groups here on Red Bubble. The purpose is to include 12 Red Bubble Artists and give them extra exposure for their work. The main advantage over Groups is that with Groups your work eventually becomes buried under other artist’s works after the Group increases in member size. With a Club your Avatar is always present on the front page and will always be as long as you stay a member of the Club due to the fact that no more than 12 members are allowed to join each Club. The Red Bubble Team has not endorsed, promoted, sanctioned or other wise been involved in creating ‘Clubs’. This Club concept is the brainchild Thomas Pettit. CLUB ONE IS FULL! / One day after posting this journal entry, it is full. Never imagined such a positive response!!! If you want to start your own club, I’ll design the avatar for you and tell you the basics if how I did it. A word of caution though, this would be a task for someone who is proficient at cutting, pasting, and most of all coding links! / I can help some, but can’t devote enough time to go through every step with someone new to this. If and when other Club Leaders start their Clubs and let me know about it, I’ll post a link in this journal entry. If you just want to be a member of a Club and not a Leader, check back to see what Clubs may open up. If you start a Club on your own with your own designs and rules, let me know, I’ll post a link here for those type Clubs too. On weekends I tend to stay up late nights and sleep in the next day. As a result, I am often reluctant to come out of bed at the start of new week. I thought I would have had an even harder time waking up today because of the long weekend; not to mention the fireworks going off last night. But it was the opposite. For the first time the sun was shining brightly when I woke up. I wake up at 7am, and during the winter it would still be dark at that time so I’d still feel like sleeping, but this morning was beuatiful. So I arrive at the office 15 minutes early, and killed the time by going onto Redbubble; smiled as I read a lovely bubblemail, and then looked at what’s been going on in the activity monitor: Reply to your comment, Comment on your work, New journal entry, New work, New work, New work, Reply to your Comment, New Work, Featured Work…..... Come Again?! What a way to make a beautiful day even brighter; my third feature! But this was a bit different, the first two I was never notified about it; I just discovered them myself among the featured works in the groups; maybe this feature notification is something new; although there is no tab in the activity monitor regarding this. Born from the Hand is featured in the Object Studies & Concepts . My second feature was also for the same piece but in a different group (My first (discovered) feature was Born from the Pinky). Paper cranes are good luck… “Born from the Hand” has always been at the top in terms of views and favorites… until last weekend when Sunset with Blue Trees got a sudden increase in favorites, but it only beats “Born from the Hand” by 1. Born from the Hand still has the most views.

  • / / Why Red? / I love accenting images with Red because red is the color of pain, the color of love, of stolen innocence, it is the color that flows during birth when a woman brings life into this world, it is often the color that flows out of us as we leave this earth. Today i am sharing part one of, “The Bride of Innocence”. The backgrounds you see are from the balcony pics i took during the daytime. WHAT THE LOSS OF INNOCENCE ISN’T My fellow creative Marny Barnes offered me some words that were powerful and rang true: I refuse to beleive that you don’t hold a peice of that innocene still…somewhere in all that torture you were strong enough to keep some of that innocence safe and just for you. AND I will tell you why I think that. YOU STILL see beauty all around you, / You bleed beauty and innocence out of all your work, / You touch the beauty in the torture and the pain and it grows roses…and color….and ART. If you had no innocence, you would not see the world and other peoples art with such wonder. I SEE INNOCENCE IN YOU. / YOUR HEART IS PURE AND BEAUTIFUL. YOUR ART IS BEAUTIFUL. / THE WORDS YOU LEAVE TO INSPIRE OTHERS / (ON YOUR OWN WORK…..AND THEIRS) IS BEAUTIFUL There is a mourning for the innocence i never got to have or experience as a child. / That is part of what makes incest and sexual abuse so painful. HOWEVER . . . / Marny brought to the light of my consciousness, something i failed to realize and address in my work . . . That my sweetness, my love, did not die when i was abused. It is still at my core and at my essence. My love of sweet joys remain, my softness, light, grace and hope. And these are aspects i will seek to express in my future survivor-orientated work. And i thank you Marny so much for bringing that to the surface of my consciousness. THE CONCEPTION / The Bride of Innocence (Jaeda as the Brides) was conceived back toward the end of May. That’s when construction workers put up scaffolding and started tearing down the supports on my 3rd story balcony and tarped it off. The construction guys worked a few days on my balcony, tearing stuff down, said something about needing to get permits – due to structural damage . . . and they haven’t been back since. So i decided i would get some pictures, now that my balcony is double long (they tore down the wall that separates my neighbor and me). Everything was bathed in a surreal blue light, from the tarp. The scaffolding was also double long and it looked like an endless hallway leading to the land of dreams, to heaven, anything your imagination can conjure up. The balcony itself looked very sad, broken and i kind of liked it’s decayed appeal and thought, at least i could use this to my advantage, creatively! So i went out on my balcony, during the day and night, and took lots of pictures. At night the tarped scaffolding resembled a boat marina or harbor at night. It looked so very different from, the hallway to heaven, of daylight. Previous to the balcony pictures, i had taken some studio pics of me in a makeshift bridal gown. I borrowed the bridal veil from my sister. Ripped the satin bottom off of an old nightgown for the top and used a sheer window treatment panel for the gown part/bottom because i don’t sew! LOL The bridal pictures i took of myself in the studio are what popped into my head as i was photographing the balcony and “The Bride of Innocence” was conceived. It is a slightly sad, disturbing series . . . but i wanted the next series i created to be along the lines of my Red Jane series. I felt like digging deep into all the little nooks and crannies of my soul and Spirit. All of those dark, repressed places that cry out to be acknowledged and expressed. partake and enjoy PEACE and LIGHT / j a e d a :) The Bride of Change The Bride of CHANGE / Peers through the isolating veil of pain and abuse – she is vulnerable / Her weakness is her strength because she OVERCOMES For she will no longer succumb to a tainted existence / Nor the toxic relationships, that leave dark stains on her soul / She knows . . .these ghosts of perversion and possession must go And the red of pain mixes with pink whispers of hope / She summoning the strength / To reach out, start anew and become WHOLE © Jaeda DeWalt listen to Jaeda recite The Bride of Change / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—- The Bride of Innocence Pretty in Pink / She softly mourns for the bride she never got to be / No pristine, white gown for this lovely lady / She will never be the Bride of INNOCENCE She does not seek what she can not be given . . . / For innocence is the one gift, / That once stolen, / Can never be replaced yet the loss is forgiven © Jaeda DeWalt listen to Jaeda recite The Bride of Innocence / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—- The Bride of Pain The Bride of PAIN is stuck inside / A blurry nightmare / As her subconscious rewinds her past / And plays it for her – over and over again . . . It is the kind of nightmare where / Violated flesh bleeds red / And the sound of innocence being stolen gets lost / Inside a hazy maze of surreal blue hues She falls to her knees in agony / She wants to find her way out of this repetitive dream / She knows to save herself / She must change the ending . . . © Jaeda DeWalt listen to Jaeda recite The Bride of Pain —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—- CLOSE-UPS / /

Okay, so I’ve been trying to get this character to look right for a while. It is based on this poem as well as many of Lucky’s own sketches and photos and is intended to be worked into a picture book (with her cooperation of course). I’ve taken a while to decide what level of realism I want (or am capable of) and I think I’ve finally reached a nice middle ground. The hair and the clothing and the size of the head have all been changing constantly… and I’m still trying to figure out some kind of wolf-type imagery to work into it, but here you go. / It has been way too long, it must seem like I’ve lost interest – but I haven’t. I’m just very slow at doing anything. Ms. Vegetable, this will be the first you’ve seen of them, what do you think so far?

Ok.. I’m really happy, surprised and excited once more. Just saw that I’m a new challenge winner once again / This What Inspires you? challenge hosted by the Prize Challenges!! group is one that speaks volumes to me, and it seems that RB artists took notice of it. / The winning image Arlington West 2007, Santa Barbara, California portrays an ongoin display of the casualties in Iraq on East Beach in Santa Barbara, to protest against the war in Iraq, and increase the public awareness regarding the military and political fallout of staying there. Each Sunday morning thousands of crosses, as the number of the fallen, for that day, are placed in the sand and volunteers are providing the public with up to the moment information on casualties plus individual stories on the fallen. This image was taken at memorial day 2007 as a tribute and memorial and as a cry for peace… Yes, I am inspired by dedicated people and their efforts to restore peace and humanity back… Thank you all for your support, votes and appreciation, and to the Prize Challenges!! group hosts for this wonderful challenge . It means a lot to me.

  • An eye for a Picture #1 *Concept*
    by ragman

    Concept: An Eye For a Picture: For me my photography is based on the four x I’s = / Idea > / Image > / Inspiration > / Impact / ...

Concept: An Eye For a Picture: For me my photography is based on the four x I’s = / Idea > / Image > / Inspiration > / Impact The idea is concerned with originality and uniqueness, a unique angle on an event, scene or subject. Take the everyday common scene or subject on, but study it and ask yourself, what have I added or contributed to this capture. Don’t be content with mere content, you progress from being the photographer or taker, to becoming the photographic artist or maker; for the image to cease being seen as a picture, but instead recognised as a craft ~ the photographer’s craft. The image is a two dimensional concept. In reality it is reflection. A volatile image is one that exists only for a short period of time, as for example a reflection of an object by a mirror. You don’t take anything, all you acquire is a reflection, this is image making. The concept of photography or image making for me is an art, an art that is to do with expression. Expressing what we feel about what we have seen and we do so through the medium of photography. For me this all begins with seeing, or as the great Irish writer James Joyce put it ~ a simple beholding of the object. Secondly the concept should be sure and contain substance, be structured, and make a statement. Too often there is no concerted effort within the concept, and little for the viewer to grasp. As a recorder and further more as a reporter we have to convincing. This brings us to inspiration or in or other words motivation, a stimulus, a performance. The legendary American photographer Alfred Stieglitz was instrumental over his fifty-year career in making photography an acceptable art form alongside painting and sculpture. In 1902 he organized an invitation-only group, which he dubbed the Photo-Secession, to force the art world to recognize photography “as a distinctive medium of individual expression”. To me this is what photography is about; it raises it above the recording dimension, and the reporting dimension into a recognizing dimension, and then later into a reading dimension. Ansel Adams once said; “Photographs should not only be looked at, they should be looked into”. The recognition is therefore two-fold as it is first the photographer in recognizing what they see before them; but is also and equally about the piece of work being recognized and read (interpreted) by the viewer. This is a meeting, a meeting of minds, a collision an impact. If your images do not create an impact, do not enforce feedback, they are as Ansel Adams has put it fuzzy. The aesthetic experience is a simple beholding of the object ~ James Joyce “I know some photographs that are extraordinary in their power and conviction, but it is difficult in photography to overcome the superficial power or subject; the concept and statement must be quite convincing in themselves to win over a dramatic and compelling subject situation.”Ansel Adams “There is nothing worse than a brilliant image of a fuzzy concept” Ansel Adams New Light Through New Windows /

  • Infrared Digital Photography - Basic Concept #1

/ As we know infrared photography in film media is infrared film cap…

/ As we know infrared photography in film media is infrared film capture some of the longer length (above 700 nm) infra-red radiation. The film is also sensitive in the UV region (below 400 nm). a few film also sensitive to near-infrared radiation out to approximately 1000 nm wavelength (1 micron). / How bout in digital? (infrared photography using filter attach in front of the lens method) “The reason i choose Digital Camera is prices continue to fall and the level of functionality and resolution is increasing in consumer digital cameras In Digital you have understand not just the concept of infrared it self, but you really have to know the specification of your Digital Camera. Is your digital camera respond very well to infrared? / In the front of your digital camera sensor (CCD/CMOS array) there is a special infrared-blocking filter. it’s called hot mirror, every brand has they own type of hot mirror, code name low pass filter. That’s why there are few camera like Nikon (D100,D50,D70,D70s) are very good capture infrared, and another brand needs longer exposure to capture infrared. For example i using Nikon D70/s, most of my photo need = iso200 1second at F/9. Why Fuji S3 Pro UV/IR can hand held IR photography? / in Canon EOS 350D will need longer than that. Are CCD is better than CMOS? Is Nikon better than Canon? i wouldn’t say that. I just want to enhance basic understanding risk of infrared photography. If you often do long exposure infrared photography, there a fatal risk you will get. At the end, the sensor will give you dead pixel and burn out electricity. I will not recommend this. But its your camera anyway. lol / The good thing is camera with low pass filter capture more natural light without infrared light. I don’t want say which brand A or camera brand B is the best, lets finish this one. Another risk is your health, what i mean is never see through view finder for compositing your photo while infrared filter is attached in your lens. The worst case is eye cancer, I’m not try to make you afraid, understand the risk. You will achieve the gain and addicted ot infrared photography After you understand the camera, lets talk more detail about infrared wavelength / Wratten #25 _ _ _ _ _ 600nm / Wratten #29 _ _ _ _ _ 620nm / Wratten #70 _ _ _ _ _ 680nm / Wratten #89B _ _ _ _ 720nm / Wratten #88A _ _ _ _ 750nm / Wratten #87 _ _ _ _ _ 800nm / Wratten #87C _ _ _ _ 850nm / Wratten #87B _ _ _ _ 930nm if you have Hoya R72, its mean your filter block all the infrared with wavelength above 720nm. If you have Hoya RM90, its mean your filter block all the infrared filter above 920nm. Why i should know about this? let me give you real case. 600 nm is more opaque and red than 720nm. Why Hoya R25 give me reddish photo with high contrast in the sky? why custom infrared filter with 980Nm need longer exposure? Understand this concept, you will know which Wratten type can give me the best IR for B/W result, or which wratten type give me the best raw photo for false color (infrared color photo). Other beneficial is will give you very clear mind which infrared filter is the best for me. / If you ask me, which one is the best? base on my experience i will say Hoya R72 is the best, why? because easy to get!!. That’s it. Some infrared filter for example iflord gelatin SFX can’t face the strong heat of the sun, easily broken. B+W is too expensive, i just can’t afford to lose another one. Heliopan RG780 is very rare, with Harrison&Harrison you have to wait another 3 months to get a filter / / Cokin P007 is my fave too, because the method is slot in. Make me comfort do the composition before taking a picture. But its back to you.. feel free to choose which one is the best for you. Remember the point of view that every filter have their own characteristic, fully understand about this. You will get full beneficial of the filter. The other thing is metering in infrared are totally different with natural metering. Because source of infrared photography is infrared light. For easy let me give you hints : / 1) There is more infrared light around when there is bright sunlight. This doesn’t mean you should avoid take infrared photo in other conditions but that the effects are stronger when the sun is out. / 2) Largest amount of IR: the hours just after sunrise and before sunset (due to the angle of the sunlight through the atmosphere), the effect is most dramatic (i.e deep black sky) when photographing with the sun behind the camera. Now you know why some of infrared photo are very contrast / 3) An electronic or bulb flash will increase the amount of IR as well as visible light. In conclusion, you will never able to depends on Auto, A, S, P, or other mode in your Digital Camera, always use Manual Exposure mode in your camera I will continue in next journal. Feel free to ask and discuss, i will do my best to answer Copyright images belong to the owner, attach in this journal not for profit information best regards, / Anwar Salim

“There are many way to Rome” In Infrared Digital Photography, there are many way (method) to get there. But definitely we need infrared filter / 1. Most common people know with Infrared Filter attach in front of the lens / These method cheapest than the others, your camera still can capture natural photo (natural visible light). But there are few concerns such as : Need long exposure, very hard to do composition, can’t hand held photography, photo mostly not sharp (miss focusing point). / Stop reading and thinking for a while please, that’s minus point doesn’t change your mind to do infrared digital photography right? / I’m still do this filter attach in front of lens method, and will free to share tips and trick base on my experience. 2. Because of that few “minus” point, some people try to remove “blocker” from the camera. As we know in Basic Concept#1, in each camera there is Hot Mirror. / / This method is still combine with infrared filter in front of the lens. Sony “Night Mode” do automatically these process. / Copyright of this image belong to Margaret Brown (photoreview.com.au) People get short exposure, infrared photography expand into another field of photography such as photo of animal, human, macro, etc. At that time, there isn’t many glass company can create custom size of infrared filter. The minus point of this method is grainy image, so much loss detail, less sharpness 3. Expand from method no 2, people change the hot mirror with type of glass (filter / clear glass). Perhaps you realize these day are many website offering this, lifepixelcom, beyondvisiblelight.com, Advanced Camera Services in Norfolk, etc for example. / / Few people DIY this method, they can change hot mirror with Cokin P007, Hoya R72, B+W, Heliopan or other common filter. This is why they get bubble effect. See this image bellow for more detail / Bubble effect will show you black dot, in certain condition will show like big transparent dot. Hard to clear this effect with clone stamp/ spot healing in post production B+W, Heliopan or Tiffen claim they using Schott glass, This is kind of glass that reduce the bubble effect in your photo. Better density of filter for easy acceptance of your mind. But we have to know that even they using Schott glass. There are few quality (A/B/C/D) in the market. Most quality is just C or D class which will give you bubble effect if you swap hot mirror with this one. Overall minus point of this #3 method is your camera can’t be normal again, very hard to re-adjust focusing point. Continue read to get what i mean by re-adjust focusing point At this point, i just want to make clear that I’m not a person who looking for money profit by sharing this information. I’m not a marketing support of infrared conversion company, also I’m not the one who accept service to remove hot mirror, and change it with infrared filter. / The reason i tell you this information, so you can see which company or person are extremely the best to do conversion of your camera. Am i recommend lifepixel.com? base on the website, i can see many minus point. Which make me think twice.. Let’s continue then, if you want to do infrared conversion. There are another few list of question you can ask / a. What type of glass they are use? learn about the characteristic of this glass for get what you want in infrared photography. Some company combine glass of Infrared with another type of glass such as UV, etc to increase the effect of Infrared / b. Lens Focus Diffraction (miss focus point), how can they adjust it for us. Most of case, photographer have to do focus shifting or small diafragma above F8.0. Another case they have to depend on 1 lens only. That lens usually expensive High Grade lens, too expensive to afford it / c. How they re-adjusting focus point of camera? Most of the case is “back Focus” with your camera / / d. Are they offering adjustment guarantee if the result doesn’t achieve my expectation? hints : Never ask about the tone of infrared (false color), frankly speaking what i mean is whatever type of infrared filter inside your camera. The natural infrared color is Black , Red tint , White. Time-Out please!, is your mind asking why in false color it seem bluish, or Tree, Grass look Yellow or White. Is not that dreamy? Is not that fact? I see raw color of infrared is bluish? am i wrong? The color bluish, reddish, or whatever raw infrared color you get from your camera is the effect of Custom pre-set White Balance before. The Yellow, dreamy tone (false color) is post processing you can get from post-processing software. People can get what ever color they want such as Grey-Scale/Monochrome (B/W) or coloring through post processing software. You can learn much more in Naomi Frost Journal in / http://www.redbubble.com/people/florentinepogen/journal/2491254-how-to-do-infrared Will continue in another topic(false color), please feel free to ask or discuss. I am not sure how many of you are aware that I am studying Visual Arts Cert 1V at Tafe. I hope to continue on and work for my Diploma next year. As part of the process at Tafe I am required to do a major work of three paintings to be assessed. The theme of the paintings is to be “The Figure In The Landscape”. We have to do lots of experiments along the way. I have three rather large long canvases, that I thought would do the job. The struggle is going to be how to put the concept together using the material I have on hand. My very first thought about the whole thing is I have to brush up on my drawing skills. I have loads of ideas floating around in my head, but any contributions would be most appreciated. I don’t want the three canvases to be one painting as then this would be classed as such. I need to make them seperate yet tie them together somehow. The canvases are 24 inches by 72 inches, or two feet by six feet. I will be uploading drawings and paintings for critique which will be most appreciated. Thanks for all your support it is always much appreciated. This is the first. This is the second developed as is of 050709 final image for 1st panel design worked out in photoshop will complete and update soon and will be called “Whispers from the dreaming”

Not pictured are the Peugeot 504 that brought us there or me and my parents. We had to be there for some reason. They were all black as I remember them but I’ve added a backwards falloff to their texture because they weren’t visible enough in black. Check out my Youtube vid if you ain’t already. Where I’m from (the US) we’ve been hearing a lot about “big tents” lately…meaning diversity in thought, belief, lifestyle, etc. I’ve always thought of “ART” as the biggest tent of all because we’re all artists in our way. Our lives are our art, I think. But that’s the “big picture,” the conceptual view. I was never an “artist,” never knew what the heck I was doing, never learned, never studied, never did much of anything except little bits here and there: drawing, taking pictures, making figures from clay. I thought that I didn’t fit into the “art tent” because I didn’t fit into the “literature tent” either. I had no message. I had no theme. I didn’t notice other peoples’ messages or themes. And when the ideas behind the creations other people made were pointed out to me I was interested but left wondering why anyone would bother. I just wanted to look at things that I wanted to look at, see the shapes, the colors, the light. I just wanted to read the stories, what happened to and with the characters. Messages? Themes? Meh. Did I ever try to put my emotions on canvas or paper? Yes. Frequently. But doing that never led to much. The response was usually that people were pushed away by the creation. It was “too much” for them. Too intense and too ugly. Too too. I still write poetry and still empty bits of me into the words. No themes, exactly, just a feeling or two. And I edit ruthlessly. But images? My messages aren’t there. I have none, usually. No slant. No axe to grind. No point to make or story to tell. No nothing beyond the shapes and colors. So being here with “real” artists is a struggle every day. It’s a GOOD struggle, but still…..I see that what I do is lacking that pre-thought, that plan. My “art” is what I find in the things I create, like a scavenger hunt, sort of, or a treasure hunt. But I never know before I start looking what I’m searching for. I start painting and things emerge or they don’t. I shoot a picture and find something in it or I don’t. I render a fractal with no thought to what it will be and then extract something or not. I pile layers onto each other and excavate a coherent image, or not. I used to think I was just lazy about it all. In fact, a relative (who is an artist) told me that and I believed it. But I know better now. I’m not choosing this. It’s me. Could I plan ahead? Could I select a message and concoct a strategy for how to present it visually? Yes…....I’ve managed to do that. But the efforts were underwhelming, blah, dry, pale; and the images were fractured, false and nearly transparent. Not me. Truly wasteful. When I take a picture I shoot what I see. Sometimes there’s something there and sometimes there isn’t. If I can edit something into existence, then I do. When I draw, I draw until something appears that makes “sense” to me. So I lack the consciousness of concept that seems to transform technicians and regular folks into “artists.” Does that matter? Is this tent big enough? No it doesn’t matter, unless my goal is to be a great artist. Certainly the tent is big enough. The fact that I do everything backwards, creating first and thinking second (or not at all) doesn’t matter either. We’re all in the tent. It’s a big one. / And I’m very happy to be here, bass-ackwards or not.
