The future of African predators is in peril. It is estimated that only 10,000-15,000 free-roaming African lions remain, down from 50,000 a decade ago. African lions are now listed as Endangered (West African subspecies) and Vulnerable (East and Southern African subspecies) by the World Conservation Union and are on Appendix II of the CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) list. African lions are in danger of disappearing altogether due to disease (FIV, bovine tuberculosis, canine distemper) and habitat encroachment. Today’s modern world subjects lions and other wildlife to many dangers. Mankind constantly seizes more and more of the remaining wild areas of Africa, forcing lions onto smaller and smaller parcels of land. Large-scale developments destroy the lion’s natural habitat. In areas inhabited by livestock, lions are frequently shot, snared or poisoned. And sadly, the hunting of these amazing animals for “sport,” for man’s pleasure, is still encouraged as a revenue producing industry by many African governments. African predators simply will not survive unless they are protected. 100% of proceeds from any sales of this image will be donated to the Virginia Zoo

Former Louisiana Governor, Jimmy Davis, is just as well known for his song, “You are my Sunshine,” as he is for his role in politics. I love the lyrics of that song, “You are my sunshine, my only sunshine; you make me happy when skies are gray. You’ll never know, dear, how much I love you. Please don’t take my sunshine away.” I thought this little goldfinch was a good companion with the lyrics of that song.

Based on the Random House Unabridged Dictionary, © Random House, Inc. 2006. The title is a play on words. She is in reality quite afraid of being petted and thus is turning into dead wood. The sun in the background is overwhelming her and beating down on her. Her legs are planted in the ground as a tree would be but she has no real power for they are spread to hinder a secure foundation and their are no roots. The random house dictionary definitions are plays too, because she is not a stable secure house, she is a random house. The people who oppress her refer to her as inanimate objects, one of these is a house. She is a house, and they have broken her door. So she has no security to keep whomever from traipsing in and out and making a mess out of her life. The only way she is granted security, safety, and stability is if she is with a man, so she feels forced, like rape. Love and companionship, bonding (bondage) become something she has to fear, and that she is deathly afraid of…petrified.
