RedBubble – Taking it to the next level? Why are we here? a) A platform in which to exhibit our artwork / b) A place to admire and be inspired by the work of others. / c) Ultimately we would all like to sell our work. I am very pleased to note that lately the Bubble is also becoming a social network. I wait for the comments from such as Meach ready to fall off my chair with laughter. But unlike Facebook (“See you down the pub at 9pm M8T”) the Bubble has PURPOSE!! / And the purpose is for the production of BEST WORK. There are those out there who love art and buy it for that reason. But there must be billions out there who think art is something you have to take out a second mortgage in order to purchase. And yet here we are offering for sale reasonably priced original and brilliant artwork. Red Bubble and in my own modest way are promoting the works. You recall I made the suggestion a while back that my fellow moderators should do some promotion work specific to their own groups. I was a bit sad to note that quite a few rejected my journal suggestion to their group. Hope they took it on board anyway. There has been a lot of hot air expelled recently about reply buttons, taking offence and unpleasant criticisms. In a way this is good because it brings peeps out of the woodwork to discuss. Which brings me to my point (at last!)…… It seems to me that in order to sell to the masses we really do need follow the overiding purpose of the Bubble and display only BEST WORK. / To this end I would like to make the following suggestion regarding the use comments box. Superb, wonderful and stunning are fine where appropriate but let’s take it a stage further; help others to achieve the Best Artwork. Perhaps an example would be – some months ago I spotted a seascape where the horizon was sloping downhill. I bravely asked if this was ‘meant’ and if not using my limited experience of photoshop I explained how to level it up. A few days ago I spotted another thing that could improve an artwork but wasn’t brave enough to place it in comments and sent a bubblemail instead. I was relieved to note that both comments were gratefully received Occasionally there is a dull photo that is good as a concept but would benefit 100% just with the addition of a drop of ‘contrast’. Two things then. BE BRAVE and use the comment box to help that person (and others) to technically to improve their artwork. And two – all of us should write the following on a post-it and stick it on our monitors, “I will not take offence if someone suggests an improvement to my work”. I am not suggesting that one should suggest conceptual improvements but comments like ‘why not re-shoot from a different angle’ or ‘crop it so the object is filling the frame much more’, are acceptable. In other words stick to technical comments. / Peeps offering comments like “That picture is cr*p” should be banned from the site I reckon. Let’s all of us get super-interactive. Use the comment box to boost the standard of our artwork so as the masses start to log-on big time they are presented with Best Work. / Over all remember the words next to the comments button – PLESE PLAY NICE. As a final thought to moderators – I will be seeking ways of splitting the Watersports and Activities group artwork into sub-groups i.e. Sailing, rowing, surfing, underwater, etc etc so that when a punter or advertising agency comes on line it will narrow their search. If anyone can help me with that I won’t be offended – honest. LOL LOVE & PEACE / & “ALRIGHT THEN MY BIRDS, MY HANSOMES!!!!! ‘avin a good day do ‘ee”. P.S. That’s A Proper Cornish greeting hence no question mark at the end of the greets. The second one responds with “yes” or “Alright Boy” or “maid”. Honestly, how can anyone take offence at being called ‘Hun’ – We are in a global Village now. Everyone has a different up-bringing / social education / way of being. Andy / Moderator / Watersports & Activities Group.

  • Everyday we are bombarded with all kinds of stress, emotions and pressures. While some of it trivial, over time it can build up, and can often display on our face as we go about our everyday life. This piece takes that one step further. Could it be that all this built up pressure is turning us into paranoid individuals? We seem to think that by sending each other greeting cards at Christmas that somehow we can convince each other everything is sweet and dandy. This greeting card tells it how it is in a cold bitter kind of way. Shortlisted AGIdeas Newstar 2009

  • My husband wanted me to do this Tee for him because those were his exact words when the story first broke. / One little personal note here which verges on the political which I usually avoid BUT those corporate execs asking for buyouts and golden umbrellas make more in a year than a person making minimum wage makes in a lifetime! I had a friend’s sister make a comment to me years ago when she was an exec for a large health insurance company…which is also in dire need of reform!...I’d just excitedly told her about a large commission I’d just received for a very low 5 figures…very low…and she said, “You artists just amaze me getting so excited about a tiny amount like that. I make over six figures just on bonuses.”....yeah, literally blood money!! Sorry, I’m just overwhelmed emotionally when I think about industry execs telling us they need a buy out to save jobs when they are making so much and flying around in personal jets. Why don’t they cut their own wages a bit and maybe they could save their companies and their jobs on their own without the government’s help! An internet friend who live in Europe told me that he’d heard of one of the banking execs in NY, who were bailed out, who was flying in his helicopter to work every day….two city blocks from his home!! Aaargh! it makes me so angry….those greedy bastards!!

  • RedBubble Stats - At Last!
    by lightsmith

I wanted to know which of my images were most viewed. / I wanted to know which were least viewed. / I wanted to know if my better selli…

I wanted to know which of my images were most viewed. / I wanted to know which were least viewed. / I wanted to know if my better selling images were really better selling. / I wanted all the above for my t-shirts too. I couldn’t find out. So I created a small software application that could connect to the RedBubble site and sift through my stats and work it all out. I have called it ‘Red Bubbler Stats’. It works like this. You run the program and then it will cycle through all your art work (or t-shirts) collecting the number of sales, comments, favourtings and views for each. It also works out a sort of percentage calculation based on the number of views for sales, comments and favourtings. In other words, you might have an image that has been viewed 100 times and commented on 10 times. This means it has a 10% hit rate. This can be very useful because a high hit rate means that the image is a ‘hit’ with those who view it. A high view rate with a low hit rate for sales, comments or favourtings indicates that your tags are good but your image is not! This information can be seen on the application’s screen but you can also export it and load it into Excel for additional number crunching. SInce every piece of art (or t-shirt) is displayed in the application you can also jump straight to that piece for editing on RedBubble, or to the page that the item is listed on. That can be very useful too. It’s also possible to sort the collumns displayed so that you can get very quick answers about what has the most or least comments or views etc. I am making it available for any to use, though I make no guarentees it will work for you or anything else. If you are running WindowsXP then you should just be able to download the executable (which is zipped) and run it. If you’re running Vista, I have no idea but you’re welcome to try. As it only comes as an .EXE with no install, it should not cause any harm at least. The instructions probably need to come but essentially, 1. You run RedBubblerStats.exe / 2. You WAIT until the redbubble screen is displayed. You’ll need to log in the first time of course – I don’t see or store your usercode or password. / 3. When the screen has logged you in, press the START button after making any option changes you wish (e.g. include non-visible works, art or t-shirts) / 4. It will cycle through all the pages and build up the statistics tab – flipping you there when done. / 5. Clicking on a header in the STATS tab will sort (alternately) by the column chosen. EXPORT will create a .CSV file that can be loaded into Excel. / 6. Select a line in the STATS tab list and click on Edit Item button to edit the particular piece of art or clothing in the EDITS tab. Click on the Edit Page button to go directly to the page list with that item on it. You can download it below: Zip file : RedBubble Stats V01.00.00.01 BTW. for the nerds, it was written in VB6 because it’s all I have available to me. Version 01.00.00.01 includes a fix whereby items with only 1 sale were not being reported correctly! Doh!
