  • Image Collection for Jack’s Bee Farm Calendar My father-in-law, Jack, built this brine tank in the 1950’s to hold the salty water (brine) used to cool the milk when they pasteurized their diary milk. There was no money to hire a carpenter or brick mason so Jack did all the carpentry and laid all the brick by himself. He also built the dairy building behind the brine tank. • Remembrance Day – also known as Poppy Day, Armistice Day (the event it commemorates) or Veterans Day – is a day to commemorate the sacrifices of members of the armed forces and of civilians in times of war, specifically since the First World War. It is observed on 11 November to recall the end of World War I on that date in 1918. The day was specifically dedicated by King George V, on 7 November 1919, to the observance of members of the armed forces who were killed during war, this was possibly done upon the suggestion of Edward George Honey to Wellesley Tudor Pole, who established two ceremonial periods of remembrance based on events in 1917 / info taken from Wikipedia This is dedicated to my grandfather Henry E Cottrell a civilian killed during WWII and to all the other casualties of war.

  • Crawfordsville Area Centennial, 1865-1965. / My mother’s birth town, Crawfordsville is the county seat of Montgomery County, Indiana and is home to over 15,000 residents. The City has consistently appeared in the top 100 Best Small Towns in America. It all started in 1813 when three rangers, Williamson Dunn, Henry Ristine, and Major Ambrose Whitlock noted that the site of present-day Crawfordsville was ideal for settlement. They returned a decade later to find at least one cabin built. Major Whitlock laid out the town in March 1823. Crawfordsville was named in honor of Colonel William H. Crawford. In 1832, Wabash College, an all-male liberal arts college was founded in Crawfordsville. Today Crawfordsville is still rich with history and the friendly mid-western life. The cross is also made from paper. Remembrance Day – also know as Poppy Day, Armistice Day or Veterans Day – is a day to commemorate the sacrifice of members of the armed forces and of civilians in times of war, specifically since the First World War. It is observed on 11 November to recall the end of World War I on that date in 1918. Source: Wikipedia The poppy’s significance to Remembrance Day is a result of Canadian military physician John McCrae’s poem “In Flanders Fields”. This poem has also been adapted as a song: In Flanders fields the poppies blow / Between the crosses, row on row / That mark our place; and in the sky / The larks, still bravely singing, fly / Scarce heard ‘mid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago / We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow / Loved and were loved, and now we lie / In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe / To you from failing hands we throw / The torch; be yours to hold it high. / If ye break faith with us who die / We shall not sleep / Though poppies grow / In Flanders fields.
