This well-known English village gets featured on everything from calendars to chocolate box lids! / This location also featured in the film Dr Doolittle which stared Rex Harrison. During this time a certain Ranulph Fiennes became offended by the construction of an ugly concrete dam built to create a harbour scene. Fiennes planned to demolish the dam. He used explosives which he later claimed to have obtained legitimately from the armoury. Using skills from a recently completed training course on evading search dogs by night, he escaped capture, but he and a guilty colleague were both subsequently traced. After a court case, Fiennes had to pay a hefty fine and he and his co-conspirator were discharged from the SAS. Fiennes was initially posted to another cavalry regiment but was then allowed to return to his regiment. I’m fortunate to live only a few miles away, so managed to capture this classic scene in the early morning before the tourist coaches arrived! Packbridge over Bybrook Between Christmas and the New Year I had an opportunity to return to Castle Combe in Wiltshire, which justifiably lays claim to being one of England’s prettiest villages. This is a shot of the Packbridge, which carries the main street over the Bybrook stream. The village was fairly quiet on this wintry Sunday morning, but the White Hart and Castle Inn were doing a brisk lunchtime trade! Date: 28th December 2008
England’s Finest? A shot of the Bybrook stream, bridge and cottages, Castle Combe, Wiltshire, possibly England’s finest village. The tower of St Andrews church can be seen left of centre. The village is often used as a film set and was featured in Dr Doolittle, Poirot and Robin of Sherwood. This shot has now had over 230 views! Date: 28th December 2008 This shot was featured in the Stream Crossings group. Click here to see more shots of Castle Combe and Wiltshire. Greeting Card: / Framed Print: /

I knows something’s going on, it’s just not…sure…what…
This yellow rumped warbler guards the suet log as vigilantly as a combative little hummingbird guards the nectar feeder. He has a distinctive “tsk tsk” call that announces his coming so it’s never a surprise when he shows up. This is the first year I’ve been privileged to see warblers at the feeders. I give John Radosevich credit for that because of his peanut butter suet recipe which is a big hit with the warblers. They can’t get enough of it! In addition to the yellow rumped warblers, I’ve seen pine warblers and yellow warblers, all enjoying the treats. Still no woodpeckers, though. Maybe one day they’ll come closer . . .
Combe Martin is a location overflowing with geological wonders. Shark fin shaped rocks compete with one another to be the tallest and sharpest, while at high tide great stacks and rock falls collude to make an adventure out of an exploration of the bay. But perhaps Combe Martin’s most striking geological feature are the strata that twist and turn in the cliff faces overlooking the bay. To the geologist’s trained eye these folds, formed of limestone, sandstone and mudstone, recall articulately a chapter in the story of the planet. To the layman it is spectacular evidence of the dramatic and formative forces that have helped to shape our world. Photographically Combe Martin has almost too many rocks! It is a location where the challenge is to assemble the rocks into some form of compositional order. The ND filter, used to balance the exposure between the foreground and sky, has darkened the distant cliff, but this is not an issue as the aim was to capture the interaction between the water movement and the rocks. Canon EOS 5D and EF 16-35mm lens. Exposure of 2 seconds at f/18.

This is the most important and popular piece of art of the Spanish and Basque famous sculptor Eduardo Chillida. Belongs to an author’s style, a blend of informality, Minimalism and Land Art. It was created in 1977 as a set of three sculptures of steel embedded in the rocks of the sea. They are located on the Ondarreta promenade of Donosti city(Basque Country) where you can see the waves breaking on them. Canon 400D Featured work in Going Coastal group (August 09) /
