Vast rows of deciduous trees can be seen in perfect columns, displaying their autumn attire, at this tree farm in eastern Oregon. A continuation of the ‘car park’ theme. This one was inspired by Enrico Bettesworth’s ‘Underworld’ and Andrew Brown’s ‘Underground’. My challenge was to interpret this site differently from those two artists. I hope I have been partially successful in achieving this.

Rising between the picturesque waters of Lake Monona and Lake Mendota, the majestic granite structure of the Madison State Capitol building in Wisconsin, glows like a beacon, accenting the Madison skyline. This photo was taken in 2007 at Karnak temple (Egypt. Africa). The Karnak temple complex, universally known only as Karnak, describes a vast conglomeration of ruined temples, chapels, pylons and other buildings. It is located near Luxor in Egypt. This was ancient Egyptian Ipet-isut (“The Most Selected of Places”), the main place of worship of the Theban Triad with Amun as its head, in the monumental city of Thebes. The complex retrieves its current name from the nearby and partly surrounding modern village of el-Karnak, some 2.5km north of Luxor. / The complex is a vast open-air museum and the largest ancient religious site in the world. It is probably the second most visited historical site in Egypt, second only to the Giza Pyramids near Cairo. It consists of four main parts (precincts) of which only one is accessible for tourists and the general public. This is the Precinct of Amun-Re, and this it is also the main part of the complex and by far the largest part. The term Karnak is often understood as being the Precinct of Amun-Re only, as this is the only part most visitors normally see. The three other parts, the Precinct of Montu, the Precinct of Mut and the Temple of Amenhotep IV (dismantled), are closed to the public. There also are a few smaller temples and sanctuaries located outside the enclosing walls of the four main parts, as well as several avenues of human and ram-headed sphinxes connecting the Precinct of Mut, the Precinct of Amon-Re, and Luxor Temple. / The key difference between Karnak and most of the other temples and sites in Egypt is the length of time over which it was developed and used. Construction work began in the 16th century BC. Approximately thirty pharaohs contributed to the buildings, enabling it to reach a size, complexity, and diversity not seen elsewhere. Few of the individual features of Karnak are unique, but the size and number of features are overwhelming. Sanctuary – Middle English, from Old French sainctuarie, from Late Latin s?nctu?rium, from Latin s?nctus, sacred, sanctify. Sacred place, especially the most sacred part of a sacred place. In ancient times and in the Middle Ages, a sanctuary served as asylum, a place of refuge for persons fleeing from violence or from the penalties of the law. To injure a person in sanctuary or to remove him from it forcibly was considered sacrilege. In Egypt the temples of Osiris and Amon offered the right of sanctuary. Under the Greeks all temples enjoyed this privilege, and certain ones, like the Temple of Apollo at Delphi, were known throughout the Mediterranean world as a haven for fugitives. In Rome fugitive slaves often sought sanctuary. Christian churches were given the right of sanctuary by Constantine I. Abuses of sanctuary, tending to encourage crime, led to its curtailment and abolition. Modern penal codes no longer recognize the right of sanctuary.

One of the reasons I love Redbubble so much, is the inspiration that other artists give me. Some time ago my australian mate Michael Bermingham posted Old Yanchep Inn which to me is a timeless classic. Then Shelly Hiebert posted Sacred which is just a fantastic image. I always wanted to get a shot similar to both of those and digging through my archives back to 2007, I came across this image I took with my Nikon D50 in the Madison State Capitol building. A little HDR processing, converted to B&W, little noise reduction applied, some Dodge & Burn (which Kimberly Palmer first introduced me to) and this is what I came up with. Please also look at Michael’s and Shelly’s image, as well as Kimberly’s work.

The Tibetan word Bardo means literally “intermediate state” – also translated as “transitional state” or “in-between state” or “liminal state”. / There are six traditional bardo states known as the Six Bardos: the Bardo of This Life, the Bardo of Meditation, the Bardo of Dream, the Bardo of Dying, the Bardo of Dharmata (Reality) and the Bardo of Existence. I’ve long been fascinated by the concept of the various bardos and this image has a dream bardo kind of feel for me. During last weeks trip to Melbourne I went on an evening stroll and found this line of columns and light at the front of the General Post office (GPO) in the heart of the city. The lines and shapes made for an interesting almost abstract look. The tunnel effect here puzzled me at first as there seemed to be a line working bottom right to top left as well. It was as if the bottom left of the shot separated itself from the rest of the image…...maybe it was just because I was tired by then!!!!! Now that I look at it again is it a line that works from bottom Left to the right???? Lines – lines – lines…..... Canon 400D – 17-85 lens.
