The Forbidden Plateau is an area of outstanding sub-alpine beauty in Strathcona Provincial Park, a rugged mountain wilderness on Vancouver Island, British Columbia,Canada Mountain peaks, some of which are snow-capped for most of the year, glaciers, forests, lakes and alpine tarns provide the stunning scenic attractions accompanied by a variety of wildlife which includes black bears, cougars, red squirrels, gray jays (or whiskey jacks as they are commonly known) Roosevelt elk, deer, Vancouver Island marmot and white ptarmigan. Sub-alpine plants are also in abundance throughout. Strathcona Park is the oldest provincial park in BC having been created in 1911 and virtually spans the entire width of the Island covering an area of 250,000 hectares. The Forbidden Plateau region has the origin of its name in Indian legend and evil spirits were believed to have inhabited the area and consume women and children who dared to venture within! Today the area provides a wonderful location for hiking, photography and camping during the summer months and Nordic skiing during the winter. The selection of photographs included within this calendar were taken during the fall and therefore in addition to the stunning blues and greens seen all year round also reflect the beautiful autumnal colour range.
