I painted this a few years ago and still have the original four by three foot painting in my studio. / I have a wide range of musical appreciation and Trane along with Miles Davis continue to inspire me in life and in art. I can make the print available if anyones interested. / - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - / / – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – / John Coltrane is sometimes described as one of jazz’s most influential musicians, but one is hard put to find followers who actually play in his style. Rather, he is influential by example, inspiring musicians to experiment, take chances, and devote themselves to their craft. The controversy about his work has never died down, but partially as a result, his name lives on and his recordings continue to remain available and to be reissued frequently. / - / His album BLUE TRAIN is certainly deserving of being hailed as a “classic,” a term grossly overused these days. Imagination or creativity doesn’t always come in the form of extreme busyness, and if you give this album your full attention, it will offer riches galore. / There is good reason why BLUE TRAIN is listed on many a jazz educator’s essential recordings list: It IS essential.

COLTRANE VIA ABSTRACTION
John locked himself in a room to free himself from self-imposed bio-chemical chains. During this specialized “fasting”, he evolved and had what he described as a “spiritual awakening”. What sprung forth out of these cretaive depth were visions codified in his landmark album, entitled: “A LOVE SUPREME”. The light around John’s head represents the halo of his illumination, release, freedom, and focus on creating a brighter world. Original Pencil Drawing on 19×30 White Archival Strathmore Paper
John Coltrane tapped into the universal consciousness of humanity. This achivement afforded him entry and permanent residence in history’s “Temple of Musical Giants”. John’s openness and ability to embrace and blend multiple streams of cultures into his body of work is evident in his work entitled “Spiritual”. John is a daily inspiration. This orginal pencil drawing is 18×24 and is currently available for purchase.

The street musician (which I nicknamed "Sax Man") is ever present in downtown Austin. His alto sax reverberating off of the buildings is a haunting sound throughout the night. But at least the man can indeed play. We asked him to play some Coltrane and he immediately whipped some up.
This is a pencil drawing of the late John Coltrane. It depicts the climate in this country at the time that one of the most powerful jazz albums in history (“A Love Supreme”) was created. Instead of reacting with anger, he took all of the pain and turned it into jazz music’s most beautful prayer. This is my tribute to John Coltrane. This also conveys the spiritual theme which is resident in all of his music.
