On a frosty june morning I found myself to the top of a local range near Geranium in the Souther Mallee looking at one of the most brilliant sunrise’s I have ever seen. The warm glow of the sun across the clouds and the shifting light made me forget about the the freezing temperatures I was working in.

I drew this a few years back when I was first experimenting with pen and watercolours. / I’ve always liked the drawing but not known what to do with it, so I’ve kept it simple and added it to the bubble!

I have been asked by many how to do selective colouring on images, so here is a quick method for doing it. / / The method I use is a simple two step process / / Open the image and turn it greyscale – click the word Image [up the top menu] then – mode then greyscale / / Click ok to the message that pops up asking to discard colour channels [Those are the red, green and blue channels that make your image colour] Now – you have a mono image with all the colour discarded – You cannot select colour if its all been discarded – so we need to put it back. / / Go back to image [up top] – mode and hit RGB – the image will stay mono, but is actually a colour image [with no colour] / / Hit the history brush in the toolbar in the left and paint back where you want the colour. Adjust the size of your brush as required. / / For more subtle effects, turn the brush opacity down – but remember when using low opacity – you must paint in one stroke, without releasing the mouse. / / thats it – yep – really simple eh / / A variation on this is for example, where you want to use this method on a forest scene – impossible to paint back in or select to colour by different methods. So after making the image greyscale, turning it back to RGB and selectiing your history brush – set the brush to a very large size with a zero hardness setting. Find a place on the image where you would like to see colour and click the brush there once. The result is a really nice graduated colour effect at the point where you wanted it to appear – awesome. / / Good luck all – have fun with it, and let me know how you get on – perhaps link your images here. / / Jul

Stand & Deliver Mixed Media, lots of layers and textures. / Moll Cutpurse is the only highway women I’ve found any reference to although I’m sure there were more…probably too smart to get caught;) Moll Cutpurse’s real name was Mary Firth, a bit of a tomboy, always ready for a rumble and happiest in the company of men. / Sources on her history are a little conflicting but she was a bit of a roguette and after pulling a big job on a Lord, brided her way of goal and the business finding it safer to work as a fence…..a fascinating character from the early 1600’s. Von kindly posted this wonderfully fitting poem / The wind was a torrent of darkness among the gusty trees, / The moon was a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas, / The road was a ribbon of moonlight, over the purple moor, / And the highwayman came riding- / Riding-riding- Sales to date: 2 / Available as a framed print, matted print, poster and card. A tendency, especially in thought or feeling, contrary to what seems the strongest Drifting on the cool blue feelings of emotion, relaxed, open, not anticipating the subtle pull of the undertow that sucks you in. A warm wave of passion envelopes you and you are lost forever in the power of love. A big thankyou to mystic moon for the words
In this design I was playing around with the concept of how people judge one another. I chose to do this in a paint-by-numbers style so that at first glance, people have no choice but to judge where which colors go. The purpose of which is to prove them wrong. / I tried this on several people, most of which assumed she had a pink shirt and blue eyes and blond hair, which is partially right, but not quite. / A person has to get to know this shirt before they realize she has pink and blue hair. At which point, they know her true colors. / This shirt is a physical representation of the personal judgments we make on others, especially those who appear different. This is what the image would actually look like if she were colored in. / special thanks to johnston photography and Loriel Andre’a for their help and professionalism in my artistic process! © This work is copyright by Nadine Smith 2008 under Australian law. / Please respect original works

Steer II (Missy Higgins) / / Pencil drawing, digital colouring The Golden Elephant – story and art by Karin Taylor / A long long time ago in a tropical land where the papaya grow wild and free, there lived a golden elephant who’s beauty was unsurpassed. All the creatures were mesmerised by what appeared to be the sun entering the water when she swam and when she walked on the land everyone stepped aside, as elephants were revered. Legend has it, the golden elephant was once a beautiful warrior princess. Once, in midst of of a terrible battle with her enemy about to take her life, she made a wish that she could become an elephant, for then no harm would come to her. The beautiful warrior princess was granted her wish, tho could sadly not return to her human form, and so it was that the golden elephant lived forever, bringing warmth and light wherever she went. During the darkest nights when the stars hid and the moon disappeared, the beautiful golden elephant shone like the sun, lighting the way for pilgrims on their journey. Although very happy she got what she wished for, the golden elephant found herself still thinking the grass was sometimes greener on the other side. Indeed she would have liked to be human again. But she accepted her new role and did the best she could with her gift of light.
