I purposefully went to Cradle Mountain in Autumn to get the colours of the deciduous beech tree (northofagus gunnii. With the help of the morning light, I came away with this beautiful memory.

At the very north end of the Grampians the major ranges covered with trees give way to rocky bluffs, caves and some of the best rock climbing anywhere in Australia. Summery Day valley is the ‘entry level’ location here – it’s a series of beautiful cliffs in a horse shoe arena. Always a spot in the sun, always a spot in the shade, 30min walk up to a great camping / sunset spot. Just writing about it makes me long to be there.

An old 1930’s Mercedes Benz on exhibition at NGV (National Gallery of Victoria) in Melbourne. This car was a V8 had automatic transmission and went from 0 – 100kmph in only 16 seconds! haha how times change! Background desaturated in Photoshop and Gaussian Blur applied to background layer. In Northern Minnesota we took a canoe trip in Voyageurs National Park. The day we arrived it was raining lightly and a very heavy fog sat over the lakes and rivers. It seemed our September vacation was not off to a very pleasant start. While standing on the dock waiting for our boat to come and shuttle us to Kettle Falls on the US/Canadian border, I took this picture of a small waterfall coming into the Ash river and the autumn colors reflecting off the water. The next three days were gloriously sunny and mild. The fall leaves were stunning and the blue water of the park lakes was truly just like a dream.

This little gem can be found just around the corner from Loch Ard Gorge near Port Campbell off Victoria’s Great Ocean Road, Australia. I came here the afternoon before and there were snap happy tourists everywhere but decided to come back the next morning and there wasn’t a soul in sight, just the crashing ocean to keep me company… Unfortunately as of early June 2009 this archway has collapsed leaving two apostles next to eachother. The Fenland Trail in the morning affords a good opportunity to see wildlife moving around the marsh and river areas. This trail connects to the Bow River Trail which actually goes all the way into Banff townsite proper. If you have time, this is a nice easy walk to get to this area without actually having to drive to get to it. The Vermillion Lakes are slightly to the west of the Fenland Trail and you can either walk to them or drive your car and use the pulloffs available. It’s a bit noisy being so close to the Trans Canada Hwy, but the scenery more than makes up for it. Throughout the day you’ll see numerous waterfowl frequenting the area. The real draw, however, is in the evening when the winds are low and the water is still, making the lake surface a mirror reflection of the now beautifully lit Mt Rundle in the background. It’s Winter in Australia, which means the Wattle is beginning to bloom. In my area we’ll soon be surrounded by a sea of bouncing little balls of yellow…... Did you know : / - Wattle is Australia’s official floral emblem, having adorned our Coat Of Arms since 1912. / - there are around 950 different species of Wattle….. which is why I have no clue as to which one this is! / - On 1 September 1910 the Sydney Morning Herald stated: / “To many Australians the wattle stands for home, country, kindred, sunshine and love; every instinct that the heart most deeply enshrines.”........ nice :) [canon 1000D, canon scanner for texture, PS watercolour] WINNER – Wattle challenge – October 2009

Shot in the Lamar Valley, YELLOWSTONE National Park, USA. A lucky grab-shot. / I had spotted the Cottonwoods and wanted to capture the beautiful colours of Fall against the shadowy hill behind, then I saw the Male Bison emerge from the trees. He had a mission on his mind, a couple of females across the river, LOL !! (out of sight of this shot.) He was moving pretty quickly, and luckily I had my short telephoto lens already attached to the camera ! A magical moment and experience !! Shot on my Canon EOS 40D, set on Landscape mode, Aperture Priority, with polarising filter, hand-held, iso 200, f 6.7, 1/180 sec , underexposed by one stop because of the dark shadowy hill , Auto WB ( I mostly use this), lens was my Canon EF 75-300mm set at 200mm (don’t have this lens anymore) RAW file, processed in Adobe Camera Raw, then tweaked in PS CS3, with selective Levels/Curves, and selective colour adjustments. BEST VIEWED LARGER Cradle Mountain forms the northern end of the wild Cradle Mt – Lake St Clair National Park, itself a part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. The jagged contours of Cradle Mountain epitomise the feel of a wild landscape, while ancient rainforest and alpine heathlands, buttongrass and stands of colourful deciduous beech provide a range of environments to explore. Icy streams cascading out of rugged mountains, stands of ancient pines mirrored in the still waters of glacial lakes and a wealth of wildlife ensure there is always something to captivate you. The area is one of the most popular natural areas in Tasmania. A visit will reveal why. Cradle is the starting point for the world-famous Overland Track, a magnificent 6 day walk that will take you through the heart of some of the finest mountain terrain. The Cradle Mountain – Lake St Clair National Park shares a “Twin Parks” agreement with the World Heritage listed Jiuzhaigou Nature Reserve in the People’s Republic of China . For many, a highlight of their trip to the northern end of the Cradle Mountain—Lake St Clair National Park is the view across Dove Lake to Cradle Mountain, one of Tasmania’s natural highlights. The mountain itself is a jagged, dolerite peak which dominates the area. Its name, supposedly, is derived from the mountain’s resemblance to a miner’s cradle. This dramatic vista can be seen either on foot as you walk along the shores of the Lake, or from the carpark at Dove Lake. Visitors should bear in mind, however, that the wild weather of the Tasmanian highlands often shrouds the mountain in cloud. There are a number of excellent walks in the area, including the Dove Lake Loop Track which takes you through the stunning Ballroom Forest, an area of cool temperate rainforest nestled against the slopes of the mountain. Taken at Springbrook National Park at The Natural Bridge on the 5th of October, 2009. The following evening we came back to view the glow worms on the cave walls, it was definitely an amazing experience (minus the stupid people shining their torches straight onto the glow worms, smoking near them and using camera flash!).
