  • For some reason I always find myself drawn to the moon in my greatest times of adversity…. seeking solace in the Mother Goddess maybe….. perhaps some ritual remnant of pagan ancestors….. Either way, it soothes me. The ritual known as Drawing Down the Moon is the Wiccan/pagan ritual of drawing the spirit of the Goddess/moon into the practitioner to enable the Goddess to speak directly through this person. / It is a very sacred ritual amongst followers of this faith. • I took this from a bus, while traveling between Madrid and Valencia, in Spain. I have no idea what this little village is called, but it was like something out of a movie. We past several of these on the 6 hour bus trip across the country. Spain has some spectacular scenery and quaint villages that almost seem trapped in time. Layered the original image twice, adjusted contrast and tone slightly. Added a texture layer from www.deviantart.com free use stock. Layered the texture several times over, adjusting the constrast, saturation and lightness on each to vary the colour and tone. • For more than 900 years the Parish Church of Rye, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin, has dominated the hill on which the old town stands. When the building of the present church was started, early in the 12th century, the town itself and much of the surrounding area was still held, under a Royal deed of gift, by the Abbey of Fecamp in Normandy. It is because of this link with Fecamp and the fact that it had become an important member of the Cinque Ports Confederation that Rye has such a magnificent church, which has sometimes been called ‘the Cathedral of East Sussex’. The worst disaster in the church’s history Pack & Chapman bells cast in 1775occurred in 1377 when the town was looted and set on fire by French invaders and the church was extensively damaged. The roof fell in and the church bells were carried off to France. They were recovered the next year when men from Rye and Winchelsea sailed to Normandy, set fire to two towns and recovered much of the loot, including the church bells – one of which was subsequently hung in Watchbell Street, to give warning of any future attack. It was not returned to the church until early in the 16th century. The ‘new’ clock was installed in about 1561-2 and was made by the Huguenot Lewys Billiard. It is one of the oldest church turret clocks in the country still functioning. The pendulum, a much later addition, swings in the body of the church. The present exterior clockface and the original ‘Quarter Boys’ (so called because they strike the quarters but not the hours) were added in 1760. Today, if you wish, you can climb the church tower where you will see the 8 bells now hanging there. These are not the same bells that were stolen in 1377 as they were re-cast in 1775 and new bells added. The total weight of the 8 bells and clappers is almost 5 tons. • Music kindly supplied by armadillozenith These are a few of the antique books I’ve come across rummaging around second hand stores. I have wanted to capture them properly, and what better way than with the viewfinder! History 101 is the inside pages of the red book at the bottom of this shot. Tweaking of levels and curves in this one, and crop of original image to a square. See here for instructions on how to create this image. • This is a shot of a piano at my aunt’s house. I’ve been toying with the idea of using it for a piece and tonight, it all came together. I’ve lost count on how many times I have heard someone say “music isn’t what it used to be”. For the first half of my life, it was something parents and adults would say to us as the younger generation. Most of the time to rolling eyes, together with the generational term “whatever”. Now however, I catch myself thinking the same thing when I listen to the radio! Were our parents so wrong? Or do we all become stuck in our ways, sounds and ideals on life at a certain age, and as a result, are less accepting of the changes and fads the younger generation create? Who knows! But this piece reflects just that :) Featured in Live Love Dream / Featured in Mysteries Of The Common Original shot desaturated and added a texture layer from www.deviantart.com free use stock. • Ahh summer has arrived early for some of us this year. After a day at the beach last weekend, I was able to get that good old feeling back that only summer can bring! These kids were playing around at the beach, and I couldn’t help but be reminded of a time in life when going to the beach, making a sand castle, digging a hole to fill when tide comes in, finding something living a rock and burying someone in sand were the best things you could ever do. Life’s simple pleasures. I live for a sunny day. Taken at Port Melbourne Beach Original shot layered once and a free use texture from www.deviantart.com – tagger stock layered on top, with a slight adjustment of RGB. Finally, omni lighting effect applied. Canon 50D / 18 – 55, 58mm / f11, 1/250, ISO 100 MCN: CC3BP-T4CDV-S575Y More Textured work:

  • I decided to turn a few of the pics I had published (see here) into pieces for the folio. This is the rear view of Notre Dame, Paris, capital of France. This cathedral resembles a neo gothic castle from this view. I wanted to give this one a historic look, but it has taken on a more fairy tale appearance. I love it when the piece takes over and creates itself! • Notre Dame, Paris, captial city of France. The last in my Notre Dame series. I created six versions of this shot, trying different textures, colours and layers, but this was the first one that moved toward a theme or emotion that I wanted. It feels quite lonely and stripped of hope to me, but I’m sure it will have varied meaning to the individual. 8 layers of texture from www.deviantart.com free use stock – Amurrr. Lightened each layer, adjusted hue and colour levels, blended each with 3 layers of the photo, one b&w, one colour and one desaturated. Flattened image and further colour tweaking and adjusting. • The Okavango Delta, Botswana, Africa. This body of water is the largest inland delta in the world, and one of the wildest parts of Southern Africa. Many of the animals inhabiting this region have never had human contact and thus, are as carnal as they come. That’s a comforting thought, when you are spending two nights bush camping among this habitat lol! No toilets, showers or indoor areas, aside from our tents. At night time all was silent, apart from the calls of elephants, hyenas, jackals, and what I thought was a train moving in the distance.. turned out to be a pride of lions roaring after they had killed their dinner. By mid afternoon the temperature reached 48 degrees celcius (118F) on our first day. That kind of heat is impossible to escape, with little to no humidity, the only water we had to drink had been turned hot with the heat. Needless to say, tempers flared and people cried. But hey, it was fun! I took this photo as we were being poled across the delta to the island in its centre. We traveled in mokoros, African style gondolas, carved entirely out of one tree trunk. Once on the island we trekked on foot, saw wild elephants, zebras, giraffes and wart hogs. Thankfully no lions, or other members of the big 5 turned up while were in such a vulnerable position. On our first night, elephants almost stampeded our camp site. The matriarch appeared at one end of the camp, stepped on one of our groups tents and was threatened to charge. All I clearly remember was someone scream. Next thing I knew, we were all pushing each other out of the way to run. But run where? We were on the banks of a delta where crocodiles and hippos lived. In the trees were possibly leopards and beyond our camp we knew there were lions. For a brief moment I thought, death by elephant?? We were however, saved by one of our guides, who hurled a flaming log at the elephant, hitting it square on the head. The matriarch stopped in her tracks, stood still for about a minute (felt like an eternity) and retreated. All of us breathed a sigh of relief, till a girl in our group said “elephants never forget”. Gulp. Added texture from www.deviantart.com free use stock – t_a_g_g_e_r. Layered original shot twice, desaturared one layer. Added texture twice, altered hue slightly on both, increased brightness, decreased contrast. Canon SX100IS MCN: CA586-6FEED-2J2VL
