...These most recent pieces (my best work yet) reflect how I choose to view myself, life and everything it ‘that is’...!! I would describe life in the same way I do myself…. a mess… but a BEAUTIFUL one!!! ...These latest pieces would not have been brought to life without the inspiration of my BEST friend. She not only inspired this latest work but the title for this piece too! =)
The best way to describe this piece would be to quote the song lyrics to Paula Cole’s song ‘Feeling Love’. Love, love You make me feel like a sticky pistil… / leaning into a stamen / You make me feel like a mister sunshine… / Himself / You make me feel like splendor in the grass… / While we’re rollin’ / Damn skippy baby / You make me feel like the Amazon’s runnin’ between… / my thighs CHORUS: You make me feel love, love, love, love, love / love, love, love, love, love / You make me feel love, love, love, love, love / love, love, love, love You make me feel like a candy apple / All red and horny / You make me feel like I wanna be a dumb blonde / In a centerfold, the girl next door / And I would open the door and… / I’d be all wet / With my tits soaking through this tiny little t-shirt… / That I’m wearing / And you would open the door and tie… / Me up to the bed Chorus Lover, I don’t know who I am / Am I very wide? Am I hot inside? / Lover, I’m glazed with your hot compunctions / Oh baby babe babe baby / I will be your Desdemona ahhhhh… Take your time You make me feel Ahaa / You make me feel WooWoo baby / You make me feel Ahaa mmm / You make me feel loved If you haven’t heard this song you should have a listen. It has to be the HOTTEST song I’ve ever heard. I can GUARANTEE you won’t find a hotter one! (If you think you know of a hotter one, tell me, I’d love to know what it is!)
Photographic based digital montage – Feb, 2008. Created over several hrs 2 nights this week (suffering from concussion) from an accidental fall over the wk’end. Photoshop montage combining digital shots of jewels, samples of vintage wallpaper and added drawn elements. Fifty layers retouched, blended, filtered, colour & tonal curve adjusted. Considering using the design as a furniture (upholstering) velvety fabric for a small round bedroom foot stool.
Amazingly there are 20 species of Magpie in the world. Not quite sure which I have painted here… looks more like an Australian magpie Many people consider them superstitious, they certainly have their place in folklore, some believe they bring good luck, others believe bad. I remember being played Rossini’s Thriving Magpie when I was quite young; it is said they have a panache for shiny, silvery things which they like to steal and hide. / Here the magpie has found a key! I wonder where it came from? I see him as a ‘Keeper of Secrets’. / The selected text comes from a traditional rhyme I was told as a child: One for sorrow, Two for joy, / Three for a girl, Four for a boy, / Five for Silver, Six for Gold / Seven for a secret never to be told This is an acrylic painting on canvas.
I’ve been a few blackandwhite Infrared photo’s of late and thought some colour might be nice. This image is also a B/W IR shot which I’ve scanned as an RGB tiff file and then just taken it from there in Photoshop. The last couple of series of work that I’ve posted I’ve done very little to in terms of post production which is because mostly I do all my tricky stuff in the camera …. or sometimes the darkroom….. yes I still hang out in dark rooms and I love the filmic magic that is available to those who still use film….... anyway just because its a cold and windy sort of a Sunday and I’m indoors …....I thought I’d have a little play around with this shot….. this is a little bit experimental and I am not quite sure if it works as well with all these rich colours woven into the image but I’m trying to illustrate the idea of Grace and that is a state of being that is clearly not black and white…....... / /
This image is the prototype for a new body of work I’m developing for exhibition at Parliment House later in the year. The thing is that the wall where the works will be hung are dark port wine coloured. So I’m thinking the black and white prints in a white matt and black frame are going to look really sombre against the background so I’ve been fooling about with a little colour with these dreamy Infrared landscapes. There will be maybe six or even eight of them all about 20×24 inches then the framing so they will be a decent size when finished….. anyway my question is…. does this muted colour add to the image or detract? should I just stick to the B/W?
I’m preparing a new body of work for exhibiton later in the year and am working out ways to present these images. Yesterday I posted a single image muted landscpe #2 in order to invite some responses to the way I preparing the indivdual images with a very muted colouring and now today I’m posting a pair of images in a way that will replicate the way I want to present them. I’m thinking that I would do either three or four pairs of linked images individually framed but hung together in a series of pairs so that they will sort of look like this one….... Each photograph will be printed at around 20×24 inches and then with the matting and framing I estimate each pair will need about 2 metres of wall space for hanging. Let me know what you all think while I’m open to suggestions with this body of work and I’ll listen to all suggestions….... ta muchly in advance…...

A Victorian Castle Farm in Dunfries & Galloway Southern Scotland / / The Romance music from Witchfinder General. A Confounded Letter. / As nightime therapy then, I listed all the happenings I could not explain. Could not account for in the dreadful, dreary, daily, dumb. Fearful scars across a manic mystery country of my own making. / First across the Camel river then to Lyonesse; to hear the bells under the waves and finding in ivy, hidden Mesopotamian mystery mazes on a rocky valley, carved, cliff wall. A witch body in an old witched blacked stone museum. A big pig, ghost pig, frightening a boy, in Thomas Hardy’s cold boarded, greenwood church. An Adder and a sign Saint under a stone in a river, ending through a fiord. The Once and Future King swimming forever under Tintagel’s sea waterfalls. The light of my stone megalith mystery landscape. The one they call paralis in paradise. Before the moor of excellent dreams. North Grandfather coming into sleep and asking to be aright, all light with his fob and blue Saint golden watch hanging bright. Othneil, Lion of God, my Norman ancestor uncle, haunting me uncertainly with the sad smell of his pipe tobacco in rooms long emptied of memories. The first time I am in Ireland when he dies, in old England and I did not know. A hand touches mine in the Irish peat dark from nowhere. It plays and strokes calmly and then unaccountably leaves. Leaving flowers and the smell of pipe tobacco. A sister asleep with eyes closed at the same time across the widest sea, as Ireland, yet reading aloud and turning pages in an illustrated book.. The Synchronizing of timeless effect and million to one chances happening every tattled tale time I looked around, in and under, in remorseless fogged fear. Finding this music only when I stopped listening and looking in the hiding place of plain sight. A caged cap cavalryman in a Priest hole chimney behind the horsehair and plaster of a friend and ancient farm. The walk across a wooden, yet carpeted floor with spurs a jingle. With his long straight pistol and long straight fluted sword all bright, all blood, all right. The monster sound crashing in the eldrich dark wood of illicit listless love with the girl that ran and ran and ran along the old railway into another woman. The place and line of decapitated Captains of failed industry suicide. All these, still many more, were list listed in the black books of before bright pagan burning, as always. As Sunshine therapy then. Did it work? Oh yes and strangely enough, no. © 2009 Ken Simm.

Glen Coe, Highlands, Scotland. / / Playing Strange Music in the Mountains of Pictland / Play your heavy blasting rock through the mountains, a kettle drum of silences. Sitting with the eagle and the cutting across the knife edge is like watching all others scampering away in fright against the snow in May. Here you must come to see the crags disappear in solo atmospheric perspectives. This is the place to see the silhouettes of life forever sky-lining and bouncing away with white tail showing. To instantly watch the piano cataracts and split bark string plucked heather that we lie in. Stalking the bone lifting purple moor with its endless ghosts and bog bodies. Wonder aloud at the murders, new and the sacrifice old. Use a word like Ptarmigan as whirring toys hit you on the edge of hearing. Chuck, chuck the percussive, scree, scree, taken on the wind section and breathing heady heavy the repeated theme. The sombre height gives its grey bass pound once more. Maybe….. I’ll wait here for you. Watch the spring hail hit, finding its counterpoint in the straight lines that angle away from the rock and bounce into your face. The clouds that shift and settle emasculating all the peaks before gathering in the most secret of female frightened gullies. Blast around an eagle eyrie angle, a rough natural inaccessable corner and slide down in wet wilting mossy green. Reach that point before rest, then reach another and another, forever. The light contains itself in patches that cross the slopes in low sheets covering a bed of grouse gorse and a pillow in this bed of low cloud. The strings across a bow. The light turning of a page. Ropes left cats cradle incongruous to achieve the impossible by any other means, brightest blue and striped in the single beam that follows. Use them. Here I will wait for you always. A final movement, a nocturne summit as the light fades before it quite hits the ground and flows down the scree below. More rope work and nothing. Go up to go down. A gloaming that roams amongst the peaks and flickers from water falling boiling down into a valley of promises, single beds and more alone meals. © 2009 Ken Simm.
