  • What your favourite record cover?

I am embarking on a new creative venture of re-interpreting and redesigning record covers with different materials to give them a third dimension, dynamic colours and tangible textures using everything from leather to stitching to coloured ink. This is all in the the belief that record covers are truely amazing pieces of artwork in their images and to make them more tangible would be a wounderful thing. I have already finished Belle and Sebastian “Tigermilk” which will be uploaded soon am working on Pink Floyd and the Sex Pistols and my interpretation of The Velvet Underground and Nico “Andy Warhol” is in my portfolio. You could have hanging on your wall a slightly different interpretation of a record cover that has meant something to your life and that you really appreciate for its design and for the music, culture and time that it symbolises. So I’m putting it out there to you my creative friends (that would be you and you) what are your favourite record covers and why? and if you are interested in ordering a design feel free to let me know. Also any other ideas you may have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and I hope you enjoy what is to come xx

COLOURS Cover of the Donovan song by LaGvoL la Grenouille Volante & Julie Miriam (“MiriamAnne” on YouTube). / Film & art by John Douglas. The lotus is in Tahiti. The kite is in Bali. The goldfish are in my local park on my street in Elizabeth Bay, Sydney. The coastline is from Lower Snug, Tasmania. Rainforest is near Russell Falls, Tasmania. The green and yellow colours at the point where the lyrics talk about sparkling corn are from the cover of Victor Barker’s book The Manatee / (Victor is the father of Julie Miriam, and they were reunited a few years ago after losing contact shortly after Julie Miriam’s birth.) The railroad is in Malaysia. The white flower is from Tahiti. The candle is in Bali. The Buddha is from Victor’s backyard in Hobart. The heart tree snow-globe is from Austria, and is made by the company who very first invented snow-globes. The painting at the end shows sections of a painting I am currently working on, about celebrating the diversity of cultures and people. All the colour patterns throughout the clip (except the green from Victor’s book) are derived from this painting. COLOURS

It brings me joy to thank the unknown that bought the Synthetic Colours t-shirt today. US currency so I’m guessing someone in the US, but then again it could be someone tweaking exchange rates to their benefit… either way I’m stoked on the sale!

  • Painting Diesel on Decks - 1/4 of the way through....
    by Diesel Laws

Diesel on Decks – The Art Piece / ...

Diesel on Decks – The Art Piece / - This is my favourite design to date and, as I was rummaging through the house the other day I stumbled across an acrylic paint set. / So I popped down the shop, purchased some 45×60 canvas’ and decided it was time to convert my art from digital to reality. I decided to take some photos of the process and as it stands, I believe I am 1/4 of the way through. Enjoy. —-—-—-—-- / To start, I hopped into Photoshop and made my canvas the same size as the ‘real’ canvas. In this case, 45cm x 60cm, with 300dpi. Then I dragged my vector image across and resized it to fit the Photoshop canvas. Unfortunately I don’t have a massive printer, so I printed the image across 4 pieces of paper, (there was a little bit of the image missing on each page) aligning each page with the reference corner; eg. top left image on the page aligns with top left corner, bottom right aligns to bottom right corner etc. Then, I printed a colour version of the center image, where most of the ‘action’ happens. I will use this image for colour reference, and also tracing later on. Then came the question of how to get that design onto the canvas. Remembering back to primary school, I used a highly advanced technique (WARNING – NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED) called…...TRACING. Told you it was advanced! I coloured the back of the main colour image, and then, using my 4 pages as a guide, I traced the image directly onto the canvas. Ooooooh! Then I posed for this really cool shot. Then next bit was to get my paints out and start colouring in the areas. Even though I will later cover over the edges with thick black outlines, I wanted to be as neat as possible and take my time on this artwork. I tend to usually rush things in real life so it was a good test! When I paint, I have a habit of pouring out way too much paint then I need. Today was no different. I’m sure I will learn to perfect this wasting technique as the days go on. I was drawing/painting for about 2 hours and I’m quite proud of how far I have got already. I’m also very happy with where it is going, and it may not look like much in the final drawing SO FAR, but in my opinion it’s on track! I’m not sure how long it will take to finish it, probably another 4 days when I get the time, but I will put up another Journal entry asap! This is where we leave it for today, but stay tuned…I will finish this! If you like this art piece, please view it here > /
