Vector illustration. Text reads: FAIRY BREAD: A traditional source of sweet delight at children’s birthday parties in Australia & New Zealand. Fairy bread has three simple ingredients: bread (traditionally white), butter (or margarine), & 100’s & 1000’s (a.k.a. sprinkles). Once prepared, the slices of bread are cut into triangles, either by halves or quarters. (Warning: not suitable for consumption by the health conscious.)

The next in my what not to eat range is Sudan1 Sudan I (also commonly known as CI Solvent Yellow 14 and Solvent Orange R), is a lysochrome, an diazo-conjugate dye with a chemical formula of 1-phenylazo-2-naphthol. Sudan I is a powdered substance with an orange-red appearance. The additive is mainly used to colour waxes, oils, petrol, solvents and polishes. Sudan I has also been adopted for colouring various foodstuffs, including particular brands of curry powder and chili powder, although the use of Sudan I in foods is now banned in many countries because Sudan I, Sudan III, and Sudan IV have been classified as category 3 carcinogens by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.[1] Sudan I is still used in some orange coloured smoke formulations and as a colouring for cotton refuse used in chemistry experiments.

I was feeling quite ill one day, and wanted some supper. I eyed the Camenbert in the fridge warily. What if the mould on it affected me now I was already ill? Would it disagree with me this close to bed time? Would I lie awake tossing and turning? Was this the cheese for me? I voiced my concerns to my parents, who were likewise potting around the kitchen. “Just have some cheddar,” mum suggested. Dad nodded wisely, / “Yes, you know where you are with Cheddar Cheese.”. A True Story.
