I bought some Singh Ray filters mid November. I did not get a chance to try them out until after Xmas – says a lot about the mad rush leading up to this period of the year. After using them I am in awe as to how effective they are. Amazingly there are 20 species of Magpie in the world. Not quite sure which I have painted here… looks more like an Australian magpie Many people consider them superstitious, they certainly have their place in folklore, some believe they bring good luck, others believe bad. I remember being played Rossini’s Thriving Magpie when I was quite young; it is said they have a panache for shiny, silvery things which they like to steal and hide. / Here the magpie has found a key! I wonder where it came from? I see him as a ‘Keeper of Secrets’. / The selected text comes from a traditional rhyme I was told as a child: One for sorrow, Two for joy, / Three for a girl, Four for a boy, / Five for Silver, Six for Gold / Seven for a secret never to be told This is an acrylic painting on canvas.

Facing Saint Mark Basin, the church plays a central role in the panorama from the Piazzetta. The first St George’s church dates back to the 8-9th century. In 982 the whole island was donated to a Benedictine monk, who founded the adjacent monastery. The present church was begun in 1566, and was not entirely finished before the death of Palladio in 1580. The façade was continued by Vincenzo Scamozzi based on the original architect’s designs and completed in 1610. The church, sometimes designated as a basilica, is a prime example of Palladio’s architectural style, and one of the finest churches he designed. The bell tower, first built in 1467, fell in 1774; the reconstruction was completed in 1791. The Benedictine monks still officiate in the church.

According to tradition, Sestri Levante was founded by the Ligurian tribe of the “Tigullii” and it was already known in the Roman Age under the name “Segesta Tigulliorum”. The ancient core of the town developed in the Middle Ages in a fortified position on the “island”. After the 15th century, the town expanded onto the alluvial plain south of the Gromolo river. Sestri Levante then became part of the Fieschi family’s domain, until it passed under the flags of the Republic of Genoa, which built the castle on the “island” and kept control of the town until the Napoleonic conquest.

In 299 B.C. Narni became a Roman colony named Narnia, and in 233 B.C. it became an important fort for the construction of the “Flaminia Road”. The Chronicle of Narnia Narni in the last years has acquired major fame thanks to the fantasy best-seller “The Chronicle of Narnia”. The author C.S. Lewis gave probably this title to his work finding inspiration from his knowledge of Latin literature. But the writer stayed in the Italian town and his biographers report that in author’s atlas the name Narni is underlined. In addition, in his writings can be found elements connected to some symbols of the town such as the griffin, the stone lion and the ancient sacrificial stone. Perhaps the Kingdom of Narnia is here…

The Fenland Trail in the morning affords a good opportunity to see wildlife moving around the marsh and river areas. This trail connects to the Bow River Trail which actually goes all the way into Banff townsite proper. If you have time, this is a nice easy walk to get to this area without actually having to drive to get to it. The Vermillion Lakes are slightly to the west of the Fenland Trail and you can either walk to them or drive your car and use the pulloffs available. It’s a bit noisy being so close to the Trans Canada Hwy, but the scenery more than makes up for it. Throughout the day you’ll see numerous waterfowl frequenting the area. The real draw, however, is in the evening when the winds are low and the water is still, making the lake surface a mirror reflection of the now beautifully lit Mt Rundle in the background.
