The sunlight through the petals and leaves looked lovely against the backdrop of the snow outside. Our short days make sunshine seem all the more precious, even indoors. artisandelimage kindly suggested that I crop the line of the wall to the right, as well as a bit off the top. Morning rainbow, Jokulsarlon, Iceland Iceland / Belgium / Italy / France / Hungary / Spain / Sri Lanka / USA / London / Portraits / Other Jokulsarlon is a glacial lake that meets the sea in Iceland. One of the most beautiful places i have been on our little planet Earth. The tragedy is that this beautiful photo would not be possible without global warming. When in a cafe at a petrol station i saw a postcard of Jokulsarlon. One single large iceberg floating in the centre. As you can see now the lake is full. Note: The size if this work was increased using Photoshop CS2. / Best size being around the 50cm wide.

It is low-branching with a spreading open crown. It sheds its bark in irregular patches in autumn, leaving a smooth white to yellow, olive-green or brown surface, occasionally with scribbly markings from insect lavae. Flowers appear in spring and early summer. They are white or cream.

Snow Gums grow in alpine areas of Australia / The bark of Eucalyptus pauciflora is smooth and white to light grey or sometimes brown-red, shedding in patches or strips to give a mottled appearance. The adult leaves are usually lanceolate to broadly-lanceolate with distinct lateral veins, but may be narrowly ovate. Lost in Utah would have been a more apt title after the GPS affectionately known as “Dorothy” lead me to a graveyard instead of a lake lol. I discovered some gorgeous countryside along route. There is nothing better than getting lost :))

From my collection: / Emerquinox / Spirit of Alaska ~ Alaska North Star Winter Scenics Copyright © Sharon Mau 2009 / All Rights Reserved Universewide Emerquinox is a word I coined when I combined the words Emerge and Equinox The Great White North I took this photo in deep winter 20 January 2008 midway between Fairbanks and North Pole Alaska. In summer this area is a peat bog. It is actually quite deep as in late Autumn I have watched a cow Moose submerge herself and swim in the pond at sunset. Near the Chena River, in winter it is used as a ‘highway’ for mushers and their dogsleds and also for snowmachines. I removed the natural blue hue with a white balance adjustment. Then I desaturated selective colours pulling down the yellow, magenta, and green. With a slight adjustment on contrast, I then used the lasso tool and selected only the sky to remove the digital noise as I had my ISO setting too high at 400 and, along with the cold, this created too much noise with the original photograph. The temperature on this day had actually warmed to about 10F. Within a week it plunged again to appx minus -47F. Vast tracts of permafrost lie across Alaska, Canada, northern Europe and Asia, and Antarctica. About 80 percent of Alaska’s land area contains permafrost. In the Interior region, vegetation must adapt itself to short, warm summers and long, cold winters. Trees grow slowly, and their root systems must be shallow because they cannot penetrate the permafrost. In Alaska, permafrost occurs as a continuous sheet north of the Brooks Range, extending from a few inches below the surface down to as deep as 1,000 feet. As one goes south, however, it gets progressively thinner, the melted layer on top gets thicker, and holes or gaps begin to appear in it. Permafrost may extend to depths of more than 500 m (1,600 ft). Clues to the age of the permafrost of the Northern Hemisphere lie in the numerous discoveries of mammoth remains embedded in frozen ground. Mammoths became extinct about 10,000 to 15,000 years ago, coincident with the end of the most recent ice age. Sunset over a river just outside of Banff, Alberta, Canada / March 2008 Every once in a while, you watch a movie that touches you and raises the hairs on the back of your neck… ... maybe it was because I was sat on a plane on my way home from an incredible journey and experience in Canada and maybe it was just because it was an incredible story, well told. A true story in which a young guy gives up all of his worldy goods to go and find himself in the wildness of Alaska… Some pictures are worth taking, just as some stories are worth telling, go take a look

On a frigid winter day this bright red cardinal certainly stood out against the snow. Especially since he insisted on hanging around long enough for an entire photo shoot. He was hoping for some seed I guess. (and yes he was rewarded). Yhis image was captured in Lynde Shores Conservation Area in Whitby, Ontario, Canada. The Fenland Trail in the morning affords a good opportunity to see wildlife moving around the marsh and river areas. This trail connects to the Bow River Trail which actually goes all the way into Banff townsite proper. If you have time, this is a nice easy walk to get to this area without actually having to drive to get to it. The Vermillion Lakes are slightly to the west of the Fenland Trail and you can either walk to them or drive your car and use the pulloffs available. It’s a bit noisy being so close to the Trans Canada Hwy, but the scenery more than makes up for it. Throughout the day you’ll see numerous waterfowl frequenting the area. The real draw, however, is in the evening when the winds are low and the water is still, making the lake surface a mirror reflection of the now beautifully lit Mt Rundle in the background.
