“Home on the Range” Photography & Artwork / by Holly Kempe © A house on top of a bare hill looking out into the twilight. “How often at night / When the heavens were bright / By the light of the twinkling stars, / Have I stood here amazed / And asked as I gazed / If their glory exceeds that of ours. / The air is so clear, / The breeze so pure, / The zephyr so balmy and light; / I would not exchange / My home here on range / Forever in azure so bright.”
St Carthage Catholic Church: Silverton 25 km west of Broken Hill in outback NSW, Australia. Built in 1886, St Carthage stands alone on the rising slope in what was once a thriving mining town. Today Silverton is known as a ghost town. I sometimes wonder if it represents a parable of the Spiritual state of Australia. I used a pallet knife rather than a brush to give depth and texture. August 2006 I drove from Halifax to Winnipeg the drive was 56 hours long. The Trans Canada Highway isn’t always the best place to pull over, especially when people might be tired, however I couldn’t resist capturing a few shots. Northern Ontario is very sparsely populated, between Sault Ste. Marie and Winnipeg (14 hours of driving) I doubt there is 500,000 people. So you don’t want to accidentally get hit by car while shooting at dawn on a highway.
Looking down Strathaird towards Torrin with Beinn na Cro on the right and ‘sometimes’ a view of Blaven behind. Dressed in Autumn colour.
This painting was done in collaboration with Mikebov and is 300mm X 1200mm Oil on canvas.
When I think about it the ancient looking tree and silhouettes of the rock could represent the ancient land and culture, looking out toward the short history of what modern Australia is today. A night out looking to capture some stars and a full moon lighting my subject, gave way to showery rain. The colours are from the city of Melbourne Australia lighting the approaching rain clouds. All I did to produce this piece is saturate the colours and reduce some noise.

some days it’s takes all you’ve got to stay sane…. some folks might say… / “But what would Ganesh say?” ..... but me …. mostly I just say…...”Jesus”.... sometimes other words might follow…. this is an actual moment in time upon a hill I was preparing to set fire too (in the name of art of course) when a skywriter flew over and wrote just what I was thinking at the time…how cool is that hey…. anyway then a fellow who was helping me prep the hill kindly stepped up to the plate and struck a pose…. I think that’s called ‘vogueing’..... me I think of it as an example of extreme syncronicity…..anyway whatever…. / . /
