“Vivid Wings” has placed in Top Ten in the challenge “Vibrant Colours in Nature” in the group à Europa! Small Tortoiseshell is a species often found in gardens. The caterpillars feed on nettles. When threatened, resting individuals rapidly open their wings, presenting the dramatic display of colors. This can frighten away young or inexperienced birds. Photo is taken in Kirkkonummi, Finland August 2008.
