acrylic on paper 14”x17” / Dancing in lighted pools of Jello-textured neon. “That’s the way to do it,” an old stranger called to the young man who, being suddenly aware of what he was doing, stopped, looked over his shoulder and glanced down at the ragged multi-colored sheet that was pulled tightly around his shoulders. He leaned back and peered up at the sun. Smoke rose from the side of a brick building and the odor or ginger floated through the air. The source of both puzzled him, as he remembered distinctly thinking he was the only person in the world just a few moments before. The old man smiled a toothless smear of flabby lips and bowed down to the dancing youth, who smiled back, jiggled aimlessly for a few seconds on thin, scratched legs and then sat down on a patch of grass in from of a building that had been painted by clowns. The young man pulled back the corner of his gown of rainbow hues and let out his heart, which had been beating all along, but in being freed, started to do a dance all of its own, though it had no legs. It also sang, which surprised the young man as he had always thought he was mute.

/ These two photos I had taken several months ago. The surf photo was taken at Sebastian Beach. The Mahi Mahi is a photo of a mounted fish I have on our pool/patio area. The Mahi Mahi is a beautully colored fish. My hubby and I have caught many of these fish over the years. They can get up to 30-40 lbs. They are considered a saltwater game fish, and very good eating. I’ve taken the two photos and have merged them with PS. This piece is dedicated to my hubby :-) A Little Info: Mahi-mahi have a lifespan of no more than three to four years. Catches average 7 to 13 kg (15 to 28 pounds). They seldom exceed 15 kg (33 pounds), and any Mahi-mahi over 18 kg (39 pounds) is exceptional. Mahi-mahi have compressed bodies and long dorsal fins extending almost the entire length of their bodies. Their anal fins are sharply concave. They are distinguished by dazzling colors: golden on the sides, bright blues and greens on the sides and back. Mature males also have prominent foreheads protruding well above the body proper. Females have a rounded head. The males and female have similar shaped bodies except for their heads. Females are usually smaller than the males. When they are removed from the water, the fish often change between several colors (this being the reason for their name in Spanish Dorado Maverikos), finally fading to a muted yellow-grey upon death. Mahi-mahi is one of the fastest-growing fish. They are fast swimmers as well, with a top swimming speed of 50 knots. Mahi-mahi spawn in warm ocean currents throughout much of the year, and its young are commonly found in sargassum weed. Mahi-mahi are carnivorous, feeding on flying fish, crabs, squid, mackerel, and other small fish.

This was a small Pond outside of an African Preserve in Florida. These are Koi. / Some Info / The word “koi” comes from the Japanese, simply meaning “carp.” It includes both the dull grey fish and the brightly colored varieties. A homophone of koi means “love, affection” and koi are therefore symbols of love and friendship in Japan: a good example is the short story Koi-san by Mukoda Kuniko.
