I am still working on the other images in this series. I like challenging myself in new ways, with my self-portraits. And i thought it would be interesting to see if i could make it look like i was interacting with myself . . . in some way. I shot this series against a green screen. The background was taken from a photo-shoot i did at an industrial site in Seattle, Washington. The watchman was kind of enough to let me onto the grounds and gave me a tour and all access pass with my camera. I wanted to convey the extreme sadness i feel with manic depression. Over the years i have discovered that sadness is often anger, spread really thin, masquerading as melancholy. Anger is an emotion i have a very difficult time allowing myself to feel and express, i often repress it. As a child i was not allowed to express my feelings or my anger. There is a detachment that comes with sadness, a disconnect from the self, from the world . . . A psychedelic experience is characterized by the perception of aspects of one’s mind previously unknown, or by the creative exuberance of the mind liberated from its ostensibly ordinary fetters. Psychedelic states are an array of experiences elicited by sensory deprivation as well as by psychedelic substances. I have to give credit to my DD for drawing the mouth for this piece. (She is 10 years old) I was having issues with it, she came into my studio, and asked if she could do it for me. God bless her sweet little heart. Whitby / North Yorkshire, UK The History of Whitby Whitby has a wonderful history, a ruined abbey, a working harbour, a delightful collection of red-roofed pantile cottages, narrow cobbled streets, and claims to have the country’s best fish and chip shops. The town is also close to the scenic North York Moors National Park and the unspoilt fishing villages of Staithes and Robin Hood’s Bay. Whitby is divided in two by the River Esk. St Mary’s Church and Whitby Abbey are on the eastern headland. The Abbey is accessible by road, and also via 199 steps from the town to the summit. These steps have associations with Bram Stoker, as he based much of his Dracula novel here whilst staying in Whitby in 1890. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (better know as Lewis Carroll) also set some of his work and poems in Whitby, as he was a regular visitor. The Abbey’s history dates back to 675 A.D. when St. Hilda founded a monastery. The present structure is from 1078 and is now in the care of English Heritage.
