Being the (current) most popular piece of art on RB, this will obviously get thousands of views…so I want to use this little space to share with you all the most important thing I know about landscape photography… I read it in a blog by Marc Adamus…. and it is… That you will take the best photos in places you are familiar with. I have found this to be 9000% true. I’ve probably shot 100+ sunsets on this beach and all my best photos are from this beach. This was a 7 minute exposure taken at 11:47 midnight. I had shot this fence a lot and knew when(tide) and how( comp) it looked the best. I noticed that the clouds were coming over Cape Town and thought that a long enough exposure would make it look like the clouds were exploding from the lights of Cape Town. I set up my tripod, composed the shot and took some ISO1600 F4 shots to get an idea of what exposure time will be necessary. It needed to be longer than 5 mins to get the right look from the clouds, but not much longer because the peak waves got to the tripods legs and could ruin the photo. I tried over and over…took about an hour, and in the end it was 436 seconds, F9, ISO200. The Original is brown and purple…I colored the photo using WB settings from the RAW tool…. Once again. This isn’t sunset, it’s Cape Town, South Africa, about 50km across the bay….taken from Strand at midnight. Those lights to the left is Simon’s Town. All proceeds from sales of this photo will go to the art for aid group….so please buy people…very generous considering that I’m a poor student. And this proves beyond a doubt that the photographer makes the photo and not the camera… Taken with a EOS 400D (rebel xti), kit 18-55mm lens and a circular polarizer filter…..

This is a self portrait I did for a challenge on another site. It ended up winning second place and getting my highest score so far :-) It was really difficult to shoot. I was REALLY lucky to get this when the sun was showing because tihs took about 30-45 minutes of experimenting with how to light it and how to compose it before I got my 8 minute window between when the sun came out from behind the clouds and went behind the trees. It was REALLY difficult to get it so where my head was bellow the reflection of the mountain in the water so that i would have the orange hallow around my head….I actually had to balance my tripod on three round rocks to get my camera high enough to get it positioned that way. (this is a self portrait) Then I would CAREFULLY set the timer on the camera so as not to knock my camera into the water….really nerve wracking…and then run to the rock and pose myself. I basically had 5 tries at this and was really lucky to get it. I feel like my outfit doesn’t match the surroundings but I couldn’t think of a color to change it to to make it match. Oh well. I still really like this photo, and its nice to finally do a self portrait again.

I wish I could say that this photo was easy to do..but it wasn’t! / While it appears that I simply smeared my lipstick, it’s a bit more complicated than that. I started out by converting it to a B&W-blue filter-then curving it using the red channel only. I then blew it up to about 300%..and airbrushed the dark red paint on..(no less than 200 agonizing brush strokes!) / It was grueling-but fun. Our little red eyed tree frog, Trickster. EDIT: Thank you all – this is not my favorite one but wanted to see how the idea would be received. So, I appreciate all your wonderful comments! This is our pet frog, Trickster. I bought cloud paper at the scrapbook store and purchased an umbrella ornament on eBay. I then hung it from our banana stand (LOL-I know, I know :-) Then I put the frog on it and snapped the shutter. Because the umbrella was hanging truly vertical he didn’t like it and it didn’t look right so in photoshop I rotated the canvas 35 degrees and cloned out the string that would hang the umbrella on the tree. That is about it. Unfortunately, I had to shoot at a higher ISO so I got some noise. Going to re-do this tomorrow with more light – it was pretty cold here and these guys like warm weather so I couldn’t play too much today.
This is an abstract image taken at the edge of a thermal spring in the West Thumb geyser basin in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. While the image appears to not contain any living thing, the colors themselves are in fact a product of the microscopic organisms called Thermophiles which thrive at extremely high temperatures. When visiting Yellowstone, you will see different veins of colors surrounding the fumaroles, geysers and thermal pools. The various colors in these mats are different types of Thermophiles which thrive at specific temperatures or have preferences for alkaline, acidic, or sulphiric enviroments. The enviroment determines the type of Thermophile that lives there and this diversity creates the colors you see. The color in this image is exactly as it was taken by my camera. It is not a macro image. At the top right, the turquoise color is the very edge of the thermal pool, the white border is mineral deposits and the brown and yellow and orange colors are the Thermophile living in a mat surrounding the pool. / This image has sold as a laminated print and a matted print 3 times through RedBubble. /
