  • Boca Grande is one of my favorite places in the world! Gasparilla (rear light) is on the way into the state park, and of course I had to stop again! I currently live near a similar lighthouse on the Delaware Bay in New Jersey (Finn’s Point ) and I am working on relocating to this area of Florida to be near my folks. Photo taken with a Nikon D90 DSLR, Sigma 17-70 mm lens From wikipedia / “The second Gasparilla Island Light was originally constructed in 1881 to serve as the Delaware Breakwater Rear Range Light. The light was discontinued in 1918. The tower was disassembled in 1921, and reassembled on Gasparilla Island in 1927. However, the light was not lit until 1932, when it served as the rear entrance range light for Port Boca Grande, with the front entrance range light approximately one mile off shore in the Gulf of Mexico. The Boca Grande Rear Range Light remains in operation at its new home today, guiding vessels safely through the Boca Grande Channel into the safe confines of Charlotte Harbor. When the two lights, which flashed at different rates, lined up, the ships’ navigators knew it was time to turn to enter Gasparilla Pass.” It is registered here / Image also available in / / 104 views 11-20-09

  • Snapping turtle! Photo taken with a Nikon D90 DSLR and a Sigma 17-70 mm lens We went to this crabfest at Baypoint, New Jersey where and this guy had a twenty year old pet snapping turtle. Notice his arm band for more Crabs and Beer : ) Snapping turtles in this area are common and sold to make snapper soup, which is on most diner menus near my home. Very unusual to see a 20 year old one as a pet. His jaw was extremely strong, but as you can see he loved to be scratched under his chin From Wikipedia “The Common Snapping Turtle (Chelydra serpentina) is a large freshwater turtle of the family Chelydridae. Its natural range extends from southeastern Canada south, west to the Rocky Mountains (and beyond, where introduced), throughout Mexico, and as far south as Ecuador. This species and the larger Alligator Snapping Turtle are both widely referred to as snapping turtles or snappers (though the Common Snapping Turtle, as its name implies, is much more widespread overall). The Snapping Turtle is the largest freshwater turtle in the western United States.[1] Common snappers are noted for their belligerent disposition when out of the water, their powerful beak-like jaws and their highly mobile head and neck (hence the specific name “serpentina,” meaning “snake-like”). In some areas they are hunted very heavily for their meat, a popular ingredient in turtle soup. These turtles have lived for up to 47 years in captivity, while the lifespan of wild individuals is estimated to be around 30 years.[2]” Featured in Beach, River, and Lake Treasures (with location ) 10-19-09 / Featured in Those Wonderful Childhood Memories 10-22-09 / 126 views 11-9-09 / 138 views 11-21-09

  • Flowers for my Mother. It’s kind of a tradition after 9 years, whenever I go to Florida (even though this time was to look at houses and someday move), I stop somewhere and pick up flowers for her. At the Super WalMart, there was an entire display of pink flowers for Breast Cancer month, even in Port Charlotte! Since my Mom is a long time survivor and these would last longer than roses in the Florida humidity, got these for her. Photo as is, taken in raw and converted in PaintShop Pro to jpg, was taken with a Nikon D90, 17-70 mm Sigma lens, 70 mm focal length, no flash, manual focus from the vase on her table. / / / Image also available in / / / Featured in The Beauty of Nature 10-22-09 / Featured in All Around Florida 10-30-09 / 144 views 11-9-09 / 157 viewa 11-20-09
