I tried smoke art again last night, and this time it worked really well, thanks to the good advice from my friends Shelly Hiebert and Vikram Franklin . This time, used a black background in a very dark room at night, and held a halogen desk lamp very close to the smoke, but only on one side. It worked! It is amazing how many shapes we can see in the smoke, depending on the way we look at it, and how we choose to colour it. After inverting it, I flipped this image vertically (upside down), and I saw a mermaid right away. To me, she seems to be riding on the back of a giant frog. I played a bit with filters to give some texture to the tail, without entirely losing the smoky effect. Focal length 30mm / ISO-100 / Aperture f/5,6 / Shutter 1/50 sec. Shot in manual mode and manual focus / Nikon D60 / AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f3.5-5.6G VR Featured in the group High Key on March 18, 2009 Finished in 3rd position of Top Ten in the Shapes in Smoke and Fog challenge of the Shapes & Patterns group on June 9, 2009

This year the meeting of the rulers of the worlds of the Amalgamated Galaxies takes place in the city of Setpoint on Andross Minor in the Primm Nebula. Security is top level, in fact all citizens have been told to stay inside while the delegates arrive. I am one of the lucky few journalist/photographers to get a pass. In this photo we view the arrival of the Stillarian Emperor in his Vixen Class Star-Rover “Freedom”. All ships have an escort supplied by the host planet.
