  • Bale Grist Mill SHP / State Historic Park / The park is the site of a water-powered grist mill that was built in 1846. It was once the center of social activity as Napa Valley settlers gathered to have their corn and wheat ground into meal or flour. The owner of the mill was Dr. Edward Turner Bale. He received the property in a land grant from the Mexican government and lived near the site until his death in 1849. The mill remained in use until the early 1900s. The mill and its 36-foot water wheel are protected as a state historic landmark and have been partially restored. A trail connects the historic park to Bothe-Napa Valley State Park. Additionally, the park includes the site of the first church in the Napa Valley as well as the Pioneer Cemetery. The gristmill and granary were built with local materials, Douglas firs and coast redwoods. Some timbers were cut to length with the bark left on, while others were roughed out with hand tools. The timbers were notched and held in place with wooden pegs as well as nails and screws. The foundation of the structure is native stone. The mill was powered by a waterwheel, with water diverted from Mill Creek nearby. A ditch carried the water from a millpond to a wooden flume, which brought the water to the top of the waterwheel. The first wheel did not provide enough power during dry summers and was replaced by a larger one, similar to the one at the mill today. Farmers brought grain to the mill where it was placed into the boot of an elevator to be mechanically transported upstairs where it was cleaned by various types of equipment. The slow turning of the old grind stones and the dampness of the mill’s site gave the meal a special quality for making cornbread, yellowbread, shortening bread and spoon bread. As old timers put it, “When meal comes to you that way, like the heated underside of a settin’ hen, it bakes bread that makes city bread taste like cardboard.” / See also the B&W version: /

  • This view from Laurel Falls trail in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park may be familiar to many of those who have hiked the 2.6 miles (total) to and from the falls. As I recall, it offered the best glimpse of the landscape through the foliage along the trail. I was using my digital camera for the first time on this trip, and I surprised myself with how well this image turned out. It was one of those “being in the right place at the right time” type of shots. I took a few photographs of the falls, and many photographs throughout the park, but none compared to this colorful scene.

  • The Little River Road is about 18 miles long. It runs between the Sugarland Visitors Center at the Gatlinburg entrance to the Smoky Mountains and the Wye in Townsend. Once you pass the road going to Elkmont Campground it snakes through the gorge along the sides of Little River. Its one of the more popular drives in the Smokies. Numerous pull offs offer unending possibilities to get out and explore the river. Fall colors can be spectacular. Along the route there is a picnic area, waterfalls, and hiking trails. The road may not be for the timid, not use to mountain roads. In some places you are on the edge of the river on one side and against a rock bluff on the other. It seems narrower than it looks and has room for motor homes to meet, so drive slow and enjoy. It is one of two ways to get to Cades Cove. From it you can also enjoy fly fishing, kayaking or just playing in the water. Tubers often dot the river on the Wye end in summer. • I had driven by the walkway several times in the past two weeks and knew I had to find a capture here somewhere. I finally decided the time was right with the fog so heavy. I walked the path and took the right fork and decided this was the most pleasing. The fog adds an incredible amount of depth to the field. The fall colors are what make the composition complete, though. I get a very ethereal feel from this scene. One of my favorites.

  • This innocent park bench had been hijacked by a ruthless horde of tulips. I was told that the bench had been released by its captors before the onset of fall, but is currently living in fear of the approaching spring season. • Bryce Canyon is a small national park in southwestern Utah. Named after the Mormon Pioneer Ebenezer Bryce, Bryce Canyon became a national park in 1924. Bryce is famous for its worldly unique geology, consisting of a series of horseshoe-shaped amphitheaters carved from the eastern edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau in southern Utah. The erosional force of frost-wedging and the dissolving power of rainwater have shaped the colorful limestone rock of the Claron Formation into bizarre shapes including slot canyons, windows, fins, and spires called “hoodoos.” Tinted with colors too numerous and subtle to name, these whimsically arranged rocks create a wondrous landscape of mazes, offering some of the most exciting and memorable walks and hikes imaginable. /
