  • Middle Prong Little River is in constant change. This day, after a day of raining, the water flow is up to normal where the day before it was a trickle. Its flow rolls small pebbles further down stream while going over or around others. The forest around it too, is in transition. Its leaves are slowly changing to their showy autumn splendor, or have already died and fell off. The Forest floor will soon be changing too, from a time when its minerals and nourishments are about depleted; to a time when the falls decaying leaves replenish its needs….. We go through transitions every day; some are wonderful as falls glorious display or bad like the decaying leaves. We have choices to make, like the stream we can change the path we’re on or simply overcome the obstacles facing us. We sometimes don’t have a choice in the change as in the death of a loved one. Throughout them all we must be like the mountain stream and move on. For if the stream don’t move on, it become stagnate and filled with unpleasantness…………Middle Prong Little River is located in the Tremont area of the Great Smoky Mountains Camera: Canon 40D… Lens: Canon 24-105 f/4…. / Focal Length: 40mm… Manual… / Shutter Speed: 1 Second… F/Stop: 14… / ISO: 100… Tripod: Bogen…… Bias 0.0EV… / Filters:B+W Polarizer… Cable Release… Format:RAW /

  • Step back in time. Enjoy the beautiful fall view they had from their backyard. This is a part of the Mountain Farm Museum, in the Great Smoky Mountains…. This is the Davis-Queen house. It was moved to this location from the Thomas Divide area on Indian Creek in NC. It was built around 1899, and is made of chestnut. Saw mills were around at this time so a frame house would have been possible but John Davis chose to build a log home…..The Meathouse off to the left was usually located close to the main house. This one came from Little Cataloochee, NC….Pork was one of the main meats of the early Appalachians. They had verities of wild meats and other farm animals as they do today, but the good old hog was what went mostly in the meathouse…. Some may call these smokehouses as this was a way of keeping the meat also. They would hang the meat in the building and build a smoky fire for a week or more. This could give a wonderful flavor to the meat but also produced a chemical reaction to the meat that helps preserve it from bugs and bacteria. Another method was to salt cure the meat. This was done by covering the meat with salt. It would then be placed on shelves or in some type of container. Once the salt was soaked into the meat it would slow down bacteria. Both methods was done in cold weather so the meat wouldn’t spoil till it had time to cure….The picket fence was often used around yards and gardens, back then they didn’t fence the farm animals in but out so they could roam the mountain and forest for food. A froe or mallet was often used to hand split the paling. The pointed to discouraged the chickens from standing on the….. The bare tree in the center was a walnut tree, which provides a mix of things from dyes to a food source….The museum is located at the visitor center at the Cherokee NC entrance to the Smokies. It includes must the building from that era. These were moved from different area of the park, The barn is the only original structure that was here to start with. From time to time you will see those dressed from this time period doing various chores.

  • There are no rules of architecture for a castle in the clouds. Makawao Union Church in evening light ~ Makawao Hawai’i Copyright © Sharon Mau 2009 / All Rights Reserved The church of the open mind, the warm heart, the inspiring soul, and the social vision. G. K. Chesterton, The Everlasting Man 1925 “Gilbert Keith Chesterton, better known by his initials as G. K. Chesterton, was an English essayist, novelist, poet, journalist, and author of literary and social criticism. Chesterton was a somewhat contentious man, writing on many subjects about which he had strong feelings, but always with charm, wit, and generosity. In 1925 he published The Everlasting Man, which incorporated many ideas suggested in his earlier works. It reflects his own spiritual journey” / “He then asks the next logical question. Is the Church a continuation of Jesus or a breaking away from him? The first might seem hard to accept, but the second involves even greater difficulties. As a help to making the correct choice, Chesterton asks us to reflect on the analogy of a key. Its truth depends on whether it fits the lock. You won’t get very far analyzing its seemingly odd shape. What you have to do is see if it opens the door. In reflecting on the key (the creed) Chesterton uses what he calls “the witness of the heretics.” (a.k.a. dissenters) Each one tried to reshape the key. The church has constantly resisted that. As Chesterton brilliantly illustrates, only if the key retains its shape will it unlock the door. In the final chapter Chesterton gives one of the most remarkable arguments for the truth of faith: the “five deaths” of the Church. We are not the first ones to live in an age which has concluded the church was moribund, passé. But it has experienced some remarkable resurrections like a phoenix rising from its own ashes. Chesterton analyzes five times when that happened and offers his reflection on what that means for us today.”

  • From my collection: / Song of a Dream ~ The Golden Threshold Copyright © Sharon Mau 2009 / All Rights Reserved Sunset near Goldstream / Interior Alaska North Star This is a composite of two images taken in the same location at the same time stitched one over the other so that you may better see what I see as I am standing here gazing at this sensational sunset as the swans are feeding in the peat bog nearby. “There is a quiet spirit in these woods, / That dwells where’er the gentle south-wind blows; / Where, underneath the white-thorn, in the glade, / The wild flowers bloom, or, kissing the soft air, / The leaves above their sunny palms outspread. / With what a tender and impassioned voice / It fills the nice and delicate ear of thought, / When the fast ushering star of morning comes / O’er-riding the gray hills with golden scarf; / Or when the cowled and dusky-sandaled Eve, / In mourning weeds, from out the western gate, / Departs with silent pace! That spirit moves In the green valley, where the silver brook, / From its full laver, pours the white cascade; / And, babbling low amid the tangled woods, / Slips down through moss-grown stones with endless laughter. / And frequent, on the everlasting hills, / Its feet go forth, when it doth wrap itself In all the dark embroidery of the storm, And shouts the stern, strong wind. And here, amid / The silent majesty of these deep woods, / lts presence shall uplift thy thoughts from earth, / As to the sunshine and the pure, bright air / Their tops the green trees lift. / Hence gifted bards / Have ever loved the calm and quiet shades. / For them there was an eloquent voice in all / The sylvan pomp of woods, the golden sun, / The flowers, the leaves, the river on its way, / Blue skies, and silver clouds, and gentle winds, / The swelling upland, where the sidelong sun / Aslant the wooded slope, at evening, goes, / Groves, through whose broken roof the sky looks in, / Mountain, and shattered cliff, and sunny vale, / The distant lake, fountains, and mighty trees, / In many a lazy syllable, repeating their old poetic legends to the wind. And this is the sweet spirit, that doth fill / The world; and, in these wayward days of youth, / My busy fancy oft embodies it, / As a bright image of the light and beauty / That dwell in nature; of the heavenly forms / We worship in our dreams, and the soft hues / That stain the wild bird’s wing, and flush the clouds / When the sun sets. Within her tender eye / The heaven of April, with its changing light, / And when it wears the blue of May, is hung, / And on her lip the rich, red rose. / Her hair is like the summer tresses of the trees, / When twilight makes them brown, and on her cheek / Blushes the richness of an autumn sky, / With ever-shifting beauty. Then her breath, / It is so like the gentle air of Spring, / As, front the morning’s dewy flowers, it comes / Full of their fragrance, that it is a joy / To have it round us, and her silver voice / Is the rich music of a summer bird, / Heard in the still night, with its passionate cadence.” ~ Poetical Works of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

You may find him at the beautiful botanical gardens along the Hana Highway in Puohokamoa Valley called The Garden of Eden Maui Hawai’i . Bud calls him Rufus, (Rufus McDuffus). It is such a silly name for such a beautiful bird. I visit the birds about once a month. They are all so sweet. They are also free and so well cared for and trained they do not fly off into the rainforest. Bud loves his beautiful birds. According to him, Rufus was once a circus performer flying through burning hoops and walking on tight ropes. Bud rescued him and now he has a lovely life of leisure delighting the children and families as they exit the beautiful botanical gardens. Bud will take your photo with his birds using your camera for a small fee. It is a sensational show and I know you will love it. The next time you pop in to say Aloha to Bud tell him Jacob and Sharon Mau said Howzit! Easily distinguished from amazons and cockatoos by their bare facial patch and long pointed tail, the Macaw family comprises one of the most extravagantly coloured in the bird world. There are several variations of the Scarlet, most notably an uncommon variety with emerald green on the wing along with the yellow, and the more common wide patch of yellow. Their declining populations in the wild continues to cause great concern for tropical environmentalists. They are flamboyant, colourful, and captivating birds. Their personalities are legendary. Because of their great beauty and engaging personalities, they have been kept in captivity for centuries. In fact, in the United States, they were kept by the Pueblo Indians since 1100 A.D. where they prized the Scarlet Macaw. • Beautiful sakura, cherry tree in blossom

  • I came across these two shells on the lonely beach. It’s so unusual to find such intact shells and it was so perfect on the desolate beach this day, I thought this was the perfect time to catch a memory of a beautiful day. I set the white balance on shade so I could get a warm color to the photo. The sand here is snow white normally. I used my 50mm lense, 100 iso and 7 apeture for a shallow depth of field.

  • This leaf, stuck in the reeds of a pond along a West Virginia road just presented a ready-made composition. All I needed was to see it (and have my camera with me.
